New tires?
07/28/13 9:44 AM

Hi guys, I picked up a screw right in the middle of my rear PILOT ROAD-2 with 9800 miles on it. These tires have been great and look like they could go another 5,000 miles!
Questions:
Any point fixing it with a patch/plug?
What is the Michlin of choice now for the 14?
Should I stay with a 190/50?
Thanks for any feedback. LD

I don't like plugging car tires, but it still gets done. I would take the tire off and patch it from the inside. Or just replace it.

Touring would be pilot road 3s.(road 2s if you don't do rain) Or angel gts.
Q3 for a sticky street tire.

I have a set of GTs waiting for a set of rims to get stripped and coated. The dilemma is I have 2 sets of rims and 1 set of ceramic bearings.

I plugged my rear Q2 a few hundred miles ago and have no problems. It was right in the middle also. I used a rope plug with plug glue. It had about 5k on it when I plugged it.

My question is; how do you get 9800 miles out of PRIIs with 5K to go? I do well to get 8K out of a rear before it's toast.

I tried plugging the tire today but it leaks a little. It was worth the shot.

My only concern is that the front could start cupping from the weight of the beast. If the mileage equals out, I will probably stick with a softer, sportier tire on the front.

Good to know. My front PRIIs, which are a dual-compound tire, seem to wear the edges out before the center. the rear PRII wears opposite.

The only way to find out (ie issues with the front) is to ride the shit out of the bike!!!

That's the plan, brothaman. The Pa. ride in September will trash the skins that are on there now and the /55 rear and PP 2CT front will be put to the test this fall in Arkansas and Swampeast Mo.

What benefit does going to 190/55 give?

The general consensus is the more triangular profile of the /55 as compared to the flatter profile of the /50 will let the machine fall into turns easier. There also may be a slight decrease in straight-line stability.

This change does not act in a vacuum. I have my front end lowered 3/4" from the stock setting to quicken steering. If it gets too nervous with the /55, I may decrease that figure. Suspension setting also are integral to handling characteristics. I like mine on the soft side, which requires smooth inputs to remain stable. This winter, the suspension will get a freshening with new oil in the front and a shock rebuild/re-valve/re-springing. The experimenting continues......

Rook, I used your post for putting the rear wheel back on. It was a piece of cake. The phone book trick worked like a charm. Now, if only I only learn how to get her up on that works stand by myself...
Thanks, LD

If the rear is changed to 55 does the front need to be changed to match?
