Error Code 3 Help!
03/24/14 9:24 AM

After getting a Woolich flash and hooking my ECU back up I got an error code 3, purge valve error. Now after some confusion (because my bike is not fitted with a purge valve, only CA models and one specific model, trust me we disassembled and checked for one.) I'm just going to have to take it a dealer to have it cleared with a KDS tool. But I'm trying to figure out what caused it. We checked to see if it was the flash by reloading a stock file, disconnecting the battery and the code was still there. Bike runs fine, actually with the flash it's insane how much a difference there is. The beast has been uncaged for sure. PM for info on that. He's flashed another 14r and no error popped. Mine is just being difficult

I'm going to take a guess and say, did you radio click 'disable 02?'

It was selected because my bike doesn't have it. When we troubleshooted with a stock bin file and tried the hard reset with the battery it didn't clear. Thoughts? The help is appreciated

I'm wondering if once an error code throws, does it not clear unless you use the Kawasaki KDS tool?

"only CA models and one specific model".....mine is a 49 state spec....it has the purge valve...2013 ABS.AND the evap canister...inside the right front midfairing.

"trust me we disassembled and checked for one"....hmmm...interesting.

What year?Service manual page 3-6....DFI section...IF a code throws...as soon as it's corrected...and the bike is restarted...it will disappear.Although it will stay in the memory for future diagnostics. If it codes everytime you cycle the ignition...it's NOT been corrected...whatever it is.

I'm thinking the kd tool goes like this. I have a phantom code but goes away. I kd up, I can look at history. I now clear history and see if the phantom comes back. That would be the only reason I'd use the kd tool. I can read a code both ways, meaning the kd or the dash.

I can hard set only one way, meaning, I can turn key off and on. This clears RAM. See how the needles zero out as a new RAM is rest? See how the ECU pings all preset balances of numbers out of the sensors? One sensor not plugged in, out of range but pings, or short to ground will pop right back up.

So even though the code can be cleared, key off, that ping is going to happen all over again [she starts and runs new input], then it's not found/changed/repaired, she pings right now, enters history as a save. You'd have to clear it with the kd tool but she will pop a 3 code without any other move finding the problem.

That is strange [try to remember the last move] before you pulled the ECU to be flashed. Did you mod any other move, shuffling there of, say a fairing removed and a wire bumped, etc.? Because it sure seems like the bike is back to OE but the code is still present.

Was the bike taken for a ride and the bike did return to stock or was it still> flashealthy? In other words, no change back to OE.

2013 ZX-14r non abs. We pulled the fairing off and followed the diagnostic from the manual. There is no purge valve on the bike. Error code still throws..

"One sensor not plugged in"...that'd be my guess...easy to forget if you've been working on the bike and want to reassemble quickly.
"We pulled the fairing off"...you don't really need to pull the fairing to see it....only the upper inside fairing(that goes over the ram duct).

Really odd.Should be two evap lines running just along the right side ram duct there...down into the fairing pocket...and also off to the purge valve at the right side frame fitting(towards the front of the motor, right side)right at the frame bracket at the hot wind cover.

UNLESS...the 2013 non-abs doesn't come with one...which I don't see why it wouldn't?

My steps were

1- park bike, remove seat and tool kit
2- unplug ECU, attach Woolich harness
3- upload flash
4- plug bike harness back in to ECU
5- turn key on, notice error light, start bike, light still on.
6- check error code, remove fairings, check for purge valve (not there). Test ride bike, no noticeable feel issues.
7- upload stock file, reset battery, turn bike on, error code still there.
8- reload flash file, still there.

Go look at the front of the valve cover. Is there a hose coming out from the rubber boot over the head? Does it T off? Or, go look under the ram chamber or the underbelly of the top frame. Is there a fat rubber hose coming out of that ram chamber? If so, you have the PAIR system.

Like Grn said, look at where the canister sits in the fairing? On the frame there is a connector there for the PAIR valve or the air purging gate they use to time in the fresh air. There might be some resistor value the ECU wants to see. Find the right resistance so you shut the code down is one loophole.

Ah, R model with the auto idle. So that would be 2 hoses off the belly. Sit on bike. Left hose is PAIR, right is air idle. So is there a left hose out from the ram's belly?

"I'll disassemble again and double check fittings"...if it doesn't have an evap unit...there won't be any fittings.IF you removed the right side midfairing..you had to unplug the evap hoses. If only to get the fairing out of the way.

The two hoses are colorcoded..one has a GREEN tape on it...the other...BLUE.They're right there...along the right side ram duct tube.No disassembly required except to remove that upper inner fairing(dash fairing).

You flashed the bike? Lets say you flashed the IAP map. Did we work that map over? My thought is something with vacuum purging or vacuum assist. Because if you just pulled the ECU and no code before flash, stop looking in the fairing. I doubt you bent a pin, but I'd make sure all the ECU pins are lined up and none are missing entry point in the harness.

Now it does sound like a bent pin...maybe.Is there a lack of pin(s) for an evap sensor on that 2013 ECU?There should be a diagram in the back of your service manual showing the path of the evap sensor unit IF you have one(or lack of one)under wiring diagrams.

If it's coding a purge valve code...then it's supposed to have that evap on there.

Checked pins, nothing bent. I didn't touch anything but the ecu before the code threw. That's why I'm confuzzled

What maps did you play with? Doubt the pin, and doubt the map, but one was physical in movement, the other in software movement... Back to software.

Main relay connector was pulled as part of moving the whole rubber housing out of the tail section, meaning, ECU and all? See if the relay side has pin drop? Or did you check all the pins in both or just the ECU's 2 connectors, or never pulled the relay connector(s)?

In contact with him now, awaiting response. KDS tool verified my bike is gender confused, it thinks it's a California model therefore throwing the code. Checked and rechecked the flash, file matches my part number, so not sure why it's doing that. I'll keep yall posted.

Talk to Johnny Cheese in ZX1441.org. They had the same problem after an ECU flash and he fixed.
