Let others ride your bike?
12/17/09 5:50 PM

On another thread Hub said....If you let your friends ride your bike it'l be a short ride.
So true................... which leads to the question...
Do you guys ever let friends ride your 14?

Me? I would never let someone else ride mine! As we all know, not just anyone can ride one. A twist of the wrist could throw an unsuspecting rider right off the back.

I learned that lesson many years ago. My first bike was a Norton 750 Commander. Not exactly a beginers bike, but I was a semi-pro surfer at the time and took to it very quickly. I guess I made it look easy. One day, my buddy wanted to ride it and I let him. Of course he crashed it. He was fixated on the concrete wall beside the curve and just went wide right into it. That was the first and last time.
A few years later I traded it for a Porsche. It had body rot and plywood floors, but it was a kick to bomb around in. I saw the guy I traded with a couple weeks later...in a wheelchair with a broken leg, broken arm, bandages on his head and what appeared to be a body cast. I cried thinking about what the Norton must have looked like. I enjoyed the Porsche for a year or so until my wife crashed it.

No story of my own, but no, I don't let anyone else ride my bike. I have learned from the mistakes of others. I watched a guy I know let his fathers friend take a ride on his new Buell. Well, Buell's have great front brakes and as this guy was returning, he grabbed a handfull and the front wheel washed away.

I guess you have no friends that can ride well and/ or ride powerful bikes.

I swap bikes with selected few often, their riding skills exceed mine.

My general rule is, if your not deemed qualified by me, keep your hands off the bike.

No one else has ridden mine. Nobody i know would dare. I sort of wish I could share the experience. That's why I enjoy riding in a group and 2 up. I wouldn't have a problem with someone who had experience with sportbikes riding my bike. I have been fearing the day that my dad will ask me to ride my 14. I'd love for him to know how different it is from a cruiser but I will have to insist that he ride only in a straight line if he ever gets on it. Not even a U-turn at the end of the road. He'd have tio get off and let me do that for him. As many of you know, the handling of the 14 is as different from a cruiser as is the power.

You got that right Mass. I wish I had friends to ride with like that! It would be nice to try a different bike without having to buy it first. LOL Hell, the dealers won't allow test rides any more. Even at the local wrecking yard He won't let you try out a salvaged bike. (Insurance thing)
I guess I've always been kind of a loner with my bikes. I have many friends who surf, ski, and ride white water, but no friends with sport bikes. I know a few guys with Harleys but I sure wouldn't let them ride mine.

I think that would be a fantastic, affordable way to ride multiple bikes without having to buy them all yourself. Kind of a problem if someone crashes your bike though.

If I know you can afford to replace it, Welcome aboard.lol. Lets face it not to many people will want to ride this bike, or dare to even ask if they can. The ones that do, must know you pretty dame good just to think it's even a possibility. All the guys that have asked, I have said yes and quite a few guys I was the one who made the suggestion. My bike has had numerous pilots. I must admit I get off looking at there faces afterwards. It's always the same. LOL.

I've only let 1 person ride bike. He's a very competent rider (55 years old) and rides big bore bikes. It was only one ride he was thinking of getting a 14 and wanted to compare it to his 12. Thats it though. I don't ride others bikes and don't let anyone ride mine. Too many things can go wrong that may not even be your fault.

actually,I let my son use the 14 for his M1 exit. The teacher on the course advised The students not to show up on a 14 or a busa as they will not pass.He got the highest grade,he had been doing track days on his ZX6RR.I had to lend him the 14 as I wouldn't let him use his 6 it wasn't insured

I have let 2 people take my bike for a spin. Both of them are owners of CBR1100XX's. One of the people is actually a chick and her XX was bone stock, the other guy has a very mod'd XX with aftermarket rims, Ohlins shock, ackro exhaust yada yada yada.

The chick was conservative in her riding and I warned her about the difference in the brakes and throttle response. She was blown away by the 14 and I don't think she ever went over 6K on the tach.

My other friend who's a lightweight guy (maybe 165 lbs) got into it a little too and he was very impressed with the power of the bike.

Other than those 2 folks, no one else has ridden my bike or even asked to. Just as well. I would only offer it to be ridden by current high HP bike owners who are respectful of other peoples bikes. Just like if I were to ride a bike that's not my own, I don't ride as if it is. I'm much more respectful to other peoples vehicles than I am my own. The main reason is because if there is an incident, I don't want to pay for a replacement.

About 1.5 months ago I took a friends very Mod'd 14 for a ride up and down the block. His bike is set up so much differently than mine that I was very curious to feel the difference. While riding his bike, I didn't go over 5K rpm or exceed 60 mph. There was no need for it. His bike had been lightened quite a bit and that was mostly what I wanted to experience. This same guy lets other people RACE his bike in 9/10 of a mile drag racing, mostly because they are lighter riders and the goal is top speed in that distance. Granted the others that pilot his bike are very experienced riders, but I couldn't see myself doing the same. To each their own I guess.

There are very few people who get to ride my bikes. The wifes uncle keeps his 2008 SuperGlyde in my gayrage so when he comes over to get his bike and it is gone he will grab my ZRX1100 or the 14. he is just a cruiser so I don't worry about him acting stupid. her cuzin is backroad crazy and a damn good jockey but I don't want him on it. Eventually I will try out his 2008 CBR1000RR and he will play on the 14 just not gonna be soon. Another guy is a rider who does 30,000 a year easy and if he wants on it I will throw him the key.
I am not opposed to others riding my bikes but I am selective.

My mechanic rides my bike if I want him to make sure everything is perfect before I take it out. Sometimes its easier to give the bike to the mechanic and let him ride it than to try to tell him whats wrong. I let one other freind ride my R1 but I rode his ducati in exchange. he would be out more than I.
