Light and Quiet exhaust?
04/18/09 1:12 PM

I'm trying to work a trade on a ZX14 and I'm doing some prep for the deal going through (hopefull). It is an 06 model so I know slip-ons will work well performance wise. However, I want to know how much difference there is in weight savings there is between a full system and slip-ons? I don't care about peak hp (bike has plenty) but would like more bottom end. Lastly, I'd like to have something relatively quiet because I will be touring on it and I don't need to draw any more attention from the law than the "Arrest Me Red" color does already...

Any suggestions for light and quiet exhaust options?

The Scorpion slip on and all yosh exhausts are farely quiet. Muzzy, Brock, and Area P are loud. Akraprovic is in the middle, A full should save you and additional 8 to 10lbs.

I could not believe how quiet the yosh carbon slipons were. If you want Quiet this is your ticket.

Brock's Performance Gen3 full exhaust in either titanium or carbon fiber cannister. Great performance, light weight, very quiet. About as pricey as a full Muzzy or Akro, though the Akro are all louder than legal.

The Muzzy M14/M10 is a litle on the loud side, but it sounds sooooooo GOOD!!!

But the weight savings was what I was the most impressed with, The complete Muzzy system weighed less than the stock manifold did the Muzzy Manifold weighed 7.5 pounds,

The M10 Muffler weighed 4lbs.

The oem manifold weighed 12 lbs.

And each oem muffler weighed a massive 14 lbs. each

Muzzy=11.5 lbs and oem=40lbs.

This was almost 30 lbs. removed from the rear of the bike, it is truely unreal, the difference this made in handling!!
Also the Muzzy is a top quality build out of top quality materials, everything fit as it should, no modifications to the fairings or shims to make fit, realllly well designed and thought out.

PS: Don't forget to get new manifold gaskets with the new system, it really sux to get a new system then have to wait for gaskets, before you can install...

I use these and they are great they are not very loud on the highway and have a deep growl at low rpm's. Here is a shot from the side and a sound clip.

I have a set of Yoshi cans on my bike and they are mellow with the baffles in but brutal with the baffles out. I ride with them out

My full yosh is really quiet with a deeper tone than stock and saved about 30lbs over stock.

Thanks for all the replies. I have to actually get a 14 first (trying to trade my Sprint), but I'm pretty sure I will go with the full Yosh R77. I like the looks, it save a lot of weight, cost is reasonable and it is quiet.

Im posting for any follow ups as I found the carbon yoshi for $739 shipped and it seems like a pretty good deal. I wanted just slipons as no mapping needed and they save a tad bit of weight and look 10 times better .

Well I got a pair of slipons and there is another topic with sound clips the Yoshi are a deeper sound and only a bit louder . now they do wail when you are on the gas but wont make the people in the hood chase you with pitchforks and torches .
If you stay a little mellow they are just right

I had Yoshi full and they were almost as quiet as OEM. The pipes and a PC with tune netted about 10 HP.

+ 1

And you won't loose any bottom end like you might with a full system.

Kawasaki put in computer controlled secondary throttle butterflies to greatly reduce the low end.....pull those out and you'll get a HUGE increase in low end power. An exhaust system won't do anything to help the bottom end, just give you more mid-range and top end power. Pulling the flies is the only way to get around kawi's factory restriction on the low end to "protect" us from ourselves

Or buy an 08 or later, since they did a lot to fix the low end weakness without getting all flies-out twitchy.

Most agree that the power increase with the flies in/out makes very little dif for low end power on a G2. It's good both ways. IMHO, openning the throttle from 100% closed while on the roll was twitchy with flies in or out. The PC with Fuel Moto map was what really smoothed that out for me but i still have to be careful about where that throttle just starts to pull open. After the throttle is open just a crack, it is easy to manage. No surprises anywhere.

Thanks for the replies. I had a couple of trips planned earlier in the summer and when I couldn't find what I wanted, I just rode the Sprint ST. By the time I got back to looking, I decided it was too late for this riding season so I just decided to hold off for a while. I look again this winter and see if I can find an 08 I think.

FWIW. Great forum here guys. Keep it up!

I'm looking for an inexpensive exhaust for an '09 ZX14. I'm looking to save as much weight as possible without creating much more noise. I like the dual systems, so no singles. I've been thinking about the Leo Vince Unlimited Slip On Exhaust & running it with the inserts in. My engine is stock with a K&N Air filter. I do not currently have a Power Commander installed but that will probably be next on the list.

Any thoughts? Whats the most bang for my buck? Again, I'm looking for the most weight savings without adding to the sound level.

So the oem mufflers weigh 14 lbs. each, how much weight will I save with the Leo Vince Unlimited Slip On?

Thanks,

jamie

I don't think I would bother with the PC right now if you are just going with slipons and that K&N, even if it' their race filter does not make enough dif to change your map (what I was told by the tuner that I bought my pipe from).

Get a full system if you really want to take full advantage of the weight reduction + improved performance. Brock CT Dual shorties are prolly what you want. Spendy and not super quiet, I'm told but the best.
