All right boyz, time to turn things up a bit…

Quarter mile…
NA Carpenter Race Big Bore, qickshifter, ecu flash and skilled rider
Turbo with a skilled rider
NA tuned bike, 100 shot NOS skilled rider

I know, weight of rider, tires, stretched, non stretched, specifics in skills, shock and there is a litany of items to talk about. For example breadth of rider aids... The above list is not an easy apples to apples comparo

Who takes the win?

Now, I know Patrick Furstenhoff aka Ghost Rider, pilots his turbo busa on a stock set up in a way that many of us cannot get near. I mean this cat is just a joy to watch. But, excluding him, and the odd roll on, what are the inherent advantages in a Turbo 14r. Steets do not roll on for miles, stop lights, twisties, dog fighting…etc are these environments where a turbo can shine? If so how, and are these inherent areas where the turbo falls down. Is the Turbo just a straight line weapon that does one thing well??? So many questions. I've posted this before. This is not an assault on anyone. I'm just looking for answers from cats that run NOS or BOOST.

I'm at the precipice Do I NOS, do I NA big block, I am not feeling the turbo… Should I BE FEELING IT?

My 2 cents...

Turbo - you know 3 people who have gone down that road. I thinkyou have enough info for you to decide if its you or not. Like I tell everyone.... If you dont "feel it" right off the bat, dont even consider dropping 4 digits on it.

NOS - for the limited time i had a shot on my old bike I came to the following conclusions. 1. Its nos... Its awesome... Def a conversation piece. 2. You get NA characteristics then you can turn on the fun switch when you desire. 3. Nos is a BIG no-no and if popo catch you with it, say goodbye to bike. There are no loop holes in the HTA.... Ive checked. Is it worth the risk. 4. you will have to make frequent stops to your "dealer" to restock. The juice runs out quick. Plus you are paying $$ per fill up.

Big Bore NA - I vote you do that since i havent seen it done personally. That would be pretty neat. I dont know how a big bore kit would work as a commuter/bike night bike though.( edit: i dont mean this as an insulting comment... Just questioning its rideablity in a commuter / L&L situation)

I'm thinking the big Bore is the most expensive set up, but the absolute best. People say they run quite hot. It would mean an overnight at Hags place and a weekend pit stop. Also 260hp means parting with some mean loot.

A 100 shot on a stock motor is financially within my grasp, however, as we have unfortunately seen - If the motor is not built right... the fuse is lit. I would want to buy a 14r motor and build it strong enough to receive a 100shot all day long. Now that is big money too, way big money. Not to mention our friends in law enforcement would be very unsatisfied to see it. Up here if your insurance company catches wind that you're running a turbo or a NOS set up, they will drop you immediately. If you suffer a claim, they will not cover you as the bike is not the same bike you insured. That adds another layer to this game.

A turbo kit is 6000, stage 1. I'm not feeling it, I've seen ups and downs, and found the downs just too depressing to be me.

The commuter bike night comment is awesome, there are a few blokes that I can see it landing on or applying to, Guilty, I ride my 14r everywhere and if it is race sprung for trouble, it is not the best application lol. I bought a second bike as the bike night parade hooligan, the 14r - I'd like to hone as the assault vehicle. Ie, take it out of commuter duty and relegate it for wild hooliganisms…

Either way Fazer, I have lit my wallet on fire, and see no end in sight.

Right now, I think I will do a 100 shot, and pray I'm not on the commuter bike all summer while I shop for an engine. However if 12000 bucks falls from the sky, I am off to Carpenter.

i haven't ventured into the realm of boost just yet but here's my take FWIW. Nitrous is the way to go for your cheapest deal on an extra 70 hp. $300-$400 and you got it. It will add less than 10 lbs to the bike. I don't know everything we need to guard against other than missing a gear or hitting the NOS at too low of an rpm--maybe there is more. Electronic failsafes will be another couple hundred, I imagine. If you are serious about competition, a progressive controller can be had for about $300 but I've seen high end controllers for aver a thou. Don't forget the tune! That's another $300. If you have the dough, you can go to whatever hp you want just by opening up the airbox and switching nozzles --of course you will need to tune again and be ready to pour $$$ into the engine so it will withstand the boost.

Dry shot through a spray bar is the way to go (actually just spraying the airbox w/out a spray bar is not much worse). Wet is more dangerous, more expensive and more complicated.

Downsides. LOL, might as well get a 60 gal tank for the garage so you don't need to go to the track every time you need to fill a bottle (which will be quite often.) Also, there will be bottle temperature issues to deal with for optimum performance.

Turbo. You never need to fill anything. The initial setup is a lot more expensive but if you like boost (and most are hooked as soon as they try it) you'll have a never ending supply. You'll get at least some boost even at low rpm. Turbo can be kept completely hidden under fairings.

Downsides. Obviously, the cost. More weight but it is mostly low to the ground. An awful lot of fiddling around with tuning and adjusting (so I hear). Engine building. Same deal as NOS. If you go turbo, might as well go with all the boost you can.

I'm hoping to keep my stock compression when I run NOS or even increase it. With turbo, I know you the compression needs to be decreased but from what I hear, the reduction doesn't really make much difference in the low end performance.

To me, NOS v turbo is a finacial decision. NOs is cheap by comparison but you have to fill bottles. OH--and there is that little popo problem unless I find a way to hide it. I'm thinking about carving out the passenger seat and putting a big bottle under the seat cowl. The seat cowl will have a hinge and lock for easy access.

I've grown to accept that the 14 will never handle like a 600 no matter how much weight it sheads. the bike has way more power than I can handle for anything BUT straightline performance. You have all the lowend grunt you need to compete with smaller bikes so more hp is not an issue there. Sure, lose the weight to improve the feel of the bike and gain a bit more acceleration but as far as handling, IDT I'm a whole lot better in the twisties on a stock bike. LOL, I think it would take a lot of practice for me to outride my 14! SO, I accept the 14 as a great high speed machine that still handles exceptionally well for its size. Do I see many riders on the street getting ahead of me in the corners? Pretty much never. On the track, with riders of my skill level on 600s? Nope, Not there either. Skill is the only mod that really makes the difference in those situations.

My Vote is for Boost.
I don't like the idea of po po giving ticket.
I don't like the idea of refilling it constantly (if we went out for a day you could run with the turbo for a few pulls down the hwy, and when u runout, you back to stock bike power level)
I don't want to see you blow - been there done that got the T-shirt
By the time you pay someone to install, put on the progressive controller, tune it and get the bottle warmer and other stuff - you will be out of pocket 2,000.00 minimum.
If you do a turbo kit and run 4lbs of boost = 250 hp and you will be very happy and have no issues. BUt, once you get used to it you will want to up the ante... and that's where the game get's expensive fast.

Bottom line - there is no cheap route to big power. Ya gotta pay to play.

Beastie my good friend. I think your turbo bike is a thing of beauty. I appreciate all the insights and advice. If I sit out the season and save up I could do a carpenter build 270hp and run against u blokes with an NA built engine. Not that I don't think your advice is sage, I do, but as the lone wolf, I need to forge a different path my brotha!

NOS doesnt get you ticket. It gets you impounded in Ontario. Intent to street race. Transporting volitile compressed gases. After you get back bike you would have paid for your turbo or BB

You might as well run.

Did you know its illegal to transport your propane tank in your car when going to fill it?

That gem is just above the rule that you cant race horses on the street.

My question is, what kinda of reliability and rideability are you going to have after doing a bigbore kit? Odds are you and the motor are both gonna hate the stop, go and lower rpm of street riding. You can't always be wot the whole time when street riding.

I agree. The 14 would give up the daily driver status if it was punched out. I guess I'd be interested in trying that on my bike now that it's 7 years old but I wouldn't plan to do a lot of normal commuting any more. You can hide turbo or NOS unless the popo have probable cause to strip your bike down.

+ boring a motor sounds like it would be pretty expensive. NOS is SOOOOO cheap if you just want to get a taste of things....and if you can restrain yourself enough to be cautious.

Beastie, I know brotha, and I appreciate your friendship. You have stepped in on many projects. My Muzzy M4 install is thanks to you bro! I would be very happy rocking 270hp with a BB kit.

Nasty your right, the BB will be a purpose built. I picked up a low mileage ZX12 to gallop around on. I had hoped to build the 14r into a magnus Beast.

Rook sage advice on the NOS brother. Be very honest I have a bad habit of attracting POPO attention. What can I say, they love me here! With this in mind, I think it would be better to not run NOS. As Fazer said accurately if the authorities take the bike, the big bore kit is quite a cheaper option.

One other consideration: a big bore kit entails replacement or modification of existing parts. You're not adding any additional components and therefore not introducing any further complexity.

Additional components adds avenues of failure.
