Noise By Law, So It Begins
01/12/12 6:28 PM

Here we go, all over the radio about the guys gunning it from stop signs in big groups.

Ok, db,,,, I have no clue what db my bike runs at. Big Big Fines. 50,000 How is that # even possible. Any one getting pulled over for any reason now will be getting the Sound meter. Police now have the best excuse in the world for the the pull over. Must drive around this place Boooooo.

Please guys keep in mind if your in small towns gunning it you may be next..... YUK

Oakville muffling motorcycles

Motorcycle enthusiasts will have to quiet down their rides while driving around Oakville or face some steep fines in the near future.

Town Council voted Monday, to approve a bylaw, which seeks to muffle excessive motorcycle noise by limiting exactly how much sound a motorcycle in Oakville is allowed to make.

Under the bylaw, a motorcycle cannot be operated in Oakville if it emits any sound exceeding 92 dBA (decibels) from the exhaust outlet as measured at 50 centimetres by means of a sound level meter while the motorcycle is idling.

The bylaw also says a one, two, five or six-cylinder motorcycle cannot be driven in Oakville if its noise exceeds 96 dBA (at 2,000 RPM). A three or four-cylinder motorcycle cannot be driven if its noise exceeds 100 dBA (at 5,000 RPM).

The bylaw will not be enforced until July 1, 2012 to allow for a public education/awareness campaign.

A call for a bylaw to deal with excessive motorcycle noise came from residents near Tim Hortons at 49 Lakeshore Rd. W., where a group of motorcyclists gather on a regular basis in the summer.

Other residents have also voiced concern about motorcycles along Lakeshore Road.

“The Kensington Retirement Residence is located at 25 Lakeshore Rd. W., and the concern we have there is regarding the unnecessary and excessive noise, which is produced by a small number of inconsiderate motorcyclists who are travelling both west and east on Lakeshore Road,” said A.H. McCallum, a Kensington resident.

“The noise problems we have result from some of the guys, and ladies, too, who sit at the traffic lights, slip their clutches, rev their engines and produce an excessive (amount of) noise.”

The problem, McCallum said, is magnified when multiple motorcyclists are at the light.

He said the motorcycle clubs are not the problem, and called them considerate. At issue are those who modify their bikes to make them louder.

Motorcycle enthusiast Robert Treasure said if bikers making noise at the Tim Hortons is the problem, the owner should be required to act.

The Town, he said, does not need to punish all motorcyclists for the actions of a few.

Ward 2 Town and Regional Councillor Cathy Duddeck pointed out the section near the Tim Hortons where the motorcyclists gather is actually a public roadway meaning the Tim Hortons owner has no authority over them.

Treasure said it is not so much the modifications the bikers make to their motorcycles, but what they do with those modifications that can cause problems.

“I think the bikes of a lot of these guys will pass the test. It’s what they are doing when they are revving it, and you can’t really catch them doing that,” he said.

“Also, there has been a lot of development at the lakeshore and all those buildings are going to amplify that noise. Even doing a test down there I think the results could be skewed by the wind noise around those buildings, the echo and things of that nature.”

Treasure said some motorcyclists believe having a very loud motorcycle is a safety issue as the noise alerts motorists they are near and therefore gets people to drive more carefully around these vulnerable vehicles.

In a report to council, Robert Ramsay, president of the Motorcycle and Moped Industry Council, said there is no evidence to back the safety argument.

Treasure said he’s concerned his club and friends are going to be subjected to the noise test.

“I think a lot of them don’t realize this is going on and I think there is going to be quite a bit of outrage when they find out. These are not young kids, these are people in their 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s. They are well-intentioned people who are going to be very disappointed they are being singled out here in Oakville.”

In a delegation to council, Luc Fournier, director of Policy and Government Relations for the Motorcycle and Moped Industry Council, said he supported the proposed bylaw.

He said the excessively noisy motorcycles being targeted by this bylaw generate noise similar in intensity to a jackhammer or a rock concert.

Individuals convicted for violating the Town’s noise bylaw, which the motorcycle bylaw is a part of, could face a minimum fine of $400 and a maximum fine of $25,000 for the first offense.

The maximum fine for any subsequent offence is $50,000.

By not "self policing"? Maybe... Still, seems like there are (or atleast should be) other "excessive" noise laws, currently in place, that could be used instead of passing new, unnecessary nonsense.

Found my Meter Now checking. Ugh.

Why bother?... You're a criminal!

Exactly... EAR wee-wee go. What is wrong with a used bearing of said size that narrows the db down to 89, they will wave at you and say, there is thatown whack with the trick headlight, I can't pull him over, showing that smile and every cop looked and saw it glow on low [beam]...

... Then, all of a sudden, the big glad woof, pulls over, piss is on the safety wire till it rusts, catch is the bearing in mid air, pockets it, off he goes into the night like greased light inn wing and a prayer they don't laugh you put the two together.

I want 50 grand every time someone closes me down splitting lanes. I want to give 50 grand to the guy that moves over, me splitting lanes. I'd say I had a police escort with the red/blue flashing on his bag bike. I kept on catching up on the squirt.

Imagine the safeR in my paws. The brakes... If only anit-lock can I lock that beauty up. It's both scary and a pain in the ass... I can live with it, we don't see it on the "Whale-R"... Yep, that's her name already. Fatty with ABS. A Bundle of Speed with some extra grunt sauce.

While we're young!

YOu've got Brock trying to match the grunt from the stockers and you're crying about pulling quiet streetsquirTTear. Honda is whisper smooth... Yeah, on one hand, you pull cat... I'd write you up. It's a green thing. Hot rod shows are no longer. Building hot rods are no longer.

I'd call for heads... Specific names. Bring them against the state... I mean, find them, wipe the table from the judge's bench odor, something needs to burn. Follow the money.

I'd pull the air cleaner, feed a hand clump of ' S Shes burger into the throttle body. Keep revving it, till the bike just about stalls. You leave town under 2000rpm with the cat's clogged. Then, nail it to clean out the honeycombs... Once you pass the borderline.

I can only say what goes on where I live and without any brand prejudice or what the hell the type of person is riding, I can honestly say the f'in idiots around here that make the noise are all Harley riders. ALL of them.
They unnecessarily rev' the bikes like they're starving for attention. Then they take off like their life depends on it. Just going a 1/4 mile down the street.
What makes it so damn funny, especially to another rider like me that KNOWS what fast/quick is, is that they actually think they're on something fast! In rare cases they may be but the fact is my much quieter 32 year old modded Suzuki will take 97% of these wanna-be racers and show them it's taillight, both in the quarter and top end. Some of these a-holes wouldn't dare try to hit 130 because they'd start wobbling like the nothing but fancy paint and noise boxes they are.
THEY are the a-holes that give us all a bad name and eventually will get us all hammered. And we can see they're stupid enough to do it.
F'in pit-racers.
Damn, rant over.

Yep, if you see a family outside with neighbors and friends having a BBQ and the biker or bikers decide to Nail it off the line in large groups,,,,,,,, Well,,, don't be surprised if one of the people at the BBQ is sits on the Town Council and is planning your demise,,,, Life.

Other towns will be on the band wagon as fast as possible. This will spread locust once they see how much money can be made. Does any even know where they could find a twin thumper Harley with stock pipes. Ok, there R some lol.

I like my bikes like I like my sex loud and fast

2ND. But 92 decibels,,,,, C'Mon. Our bikes fail at idle give be a break. Who picked that # ?

My gut feeling is, no matter what the situ Police now have a free reason for the pull over and the officer will be walking up with the sound meter in hand. Once they see it's a sports bike ticket(BIG TICKET)no matter what, Even if your close to the 92 db mark like I am. I will be turning my idle down to stall 900rpm ???? Should pass then. Grrrrrr.

Brother just told me his 1800cc short pipe M109R passed with his meter,,,,,, How lol

Well I don't have a DB tester, but I do have an Android phone, and wouldn't you know it there's a App. for that!

Started the bike up and at 2000 rpm I'm at 72 db's at 5K I'm at 78db's.
This was at 20" from pipe and at a 45 degree angle and in my basement, outside in the open would have been less I would guess.
So unless this app. isn't accurate at all, I say I'm good to rev her up!

Only have slip on's here and certainly Akra's are much louder but there's a real margin from 78 to 105 db's.
That's got to be hard on the ears no?

My test was done in garage parked next to other bike. I too am hoping to see lower #'s outside.
