Russian Roulette
05/11/13 7:35 PM

I am planning a few mc trips across the country this summer and would like to know of some killer places ride. One ride I have in mind is making a lap around Lake Superior. Another is to venture out to the Black Hills.

I'd like to hear from you guys on any suggestions for sightseeing or fun places worth making the run just to ride.

Deals gap TN. has a road, us129. 318 curves in 11 miles. I am going there myself the 1st week of June. We try to go once a year. There a lot of other great roads around there also, checkout www.tailofthedragon.com, cherohala skyway is another great road down there as well.

Of course I'm from Ohio and south east Ohio has great roads as well. Hocking Hills is a very popular place here.

The southern part of the Blue Ridge Parkway is my personal favorite. The high passes (i.e. Independence Pass) in Colorado are awesome. Monument Valley in Utah as well as Death Valley are places you'll never forget.

Death Valley! I've never been to a desert and was considering going there. Great suggestions guys! Thank you, I will definitely be incorporating some of these places into my tours this summer.

Omega, how does your 14R handle on those dragon's tail swooping corners?

I was considering going here in a couple weeks with a large group of sportbike riders i know, but not sure i want to press my luck, as I am not up to snuff on cornering this bike yet, and that the Dragon's Tail seems to be THE test for cornering skills.

I may go at some point when I am more confidnet in my skills on the turns, but that's still some time away, yet.

Just stay away from the Dragon during weekends - it gets really crazy.

Yes... No dragon on the weekend :) I am leaving on a Sunday and coming back on a Friday. 5/2-5/7 if anyone is going to be down there... We found this place, The Dragons Rest, I don't think I will ever stay any place else down there. Nice little cabins, covered bike parking, fire pits, grills, outside furniture, and laundry facilities. And its very reasonable, especially if you split the cabin with friends, as I am.

ZX14MAN64 -- This will be my first trip down on the 14. I didn't get it until late last year. I have had it on some pretty twisty roads and it handled well. My suspension is a little softer than it should be but was still solid. Albeit, I was not on the dragon :)

I have seen pics of 14's on the dragon and getting down on them too! If you never had, check out www.killboy.com or his facebook page. He makes his living taking photo's of bikers on the dragon.

Right on! Thanks for the offer Wolfman. I'll have to modify my Lake Superior tour and add in a couple extra lakes to pass though your area.

Darryle,
You doing bike night this Thursday?

Nasty, I'm off July and August. Got a big place, with two little wolf cubs! They go to sleep at 730. Wife's a great cook and my office is huge. You can sprawl out and chill. Saporrow Beer is abundant.
Will wait to receive you on your tour. Maybe add a bike night in the mix...The boyz I ride with in the 14 Nation are a great lot too.

I would like to extend an open invitation to you and everyone on this site, if you're ever in the Reno/Carson City area, look me up. I'm fortunate enough to live within striking (ha) distance of many of the best motorcycle mountain roads in the west! All sports bike riders here are very familiar with names like Monitor Pass, Ebbetts Pass, Sonora Pass, the Sierraville/Downieville loop, Ice House Road, Wentworth Springs and the infamous Virginia City truck route, to name just a few. There is an annual event for Hayabusa owners called the Reno Busa Stampede that come from (literally) all over the USA and Canada just to ride these awesome Sierra Nevada Mountain roads.

Cczx14r that's a mad generous invitation. I think I am going to plan a ride down and take you up on your generous offer!!! The same is extended to you, but really Toronto is an Ice Cream attraction when compared to those maagnificent trails. It would not be a mutual exchange my friend. You are welcome nonetheless!

Nasty,

go to www.butlermaps.com

you won't regret spending some coin for these color coded maps made of very durable waterproof material.

I met the guys who make and sell them at their shop in CO. They are enthusiasts and have gone to a great deal of effort to chart the best roads in any area. Roads are rated for effort and enjoyment......heh,heh.

The suggestions just keep coming in! That's great! Now I need to start planing some routes to take this summer.

Paul- that is something I was actually wishing existed! Excellent! I will definitely have to look into a couple and try em out.

Wolfman- I'm in agricultural production(a farmer) so that actually is the best time for me to tour around. There ain't much to do when August rolls around until mid-late September, and my other two businesses are also somewhat slow as well during that time. About the only time of year I can actually sit back and relax a little.

Anyone want to develop one with me?

US 550 in southern Colorado.

US 33 in West Virginia.

Lots of other roads in those areas and in the Deal's Gap vicinity, such as Foothills Parkway. Blood Mountain Rd., Cherahola Skyway,

Anything in NW Arkansas.

If you go to The Black Hills, Vanocker Canyon Rd. Spearfish Canyon Rd. Iron Mountain Rd. Custer State Park, Needles Highway

I've heard that Beartooth and Chief Joseph Highways in Montana are fantastic, too, although I've not ridden them.

Here's some links to several of my "Front Range" Colorado pics. Most of these are within 15 minutes to an hour of my home.

If you come here to ride, pick up a copy of "The Complete Guide to Motorcycling Colorado" by Steve Farson. It's money well spent !

From what I've seen, a part of riding some place famous like the dragon is not only your own skill, but you also gotta keep in mind not to *try and stay up with my buddies* and push your skill level too far.

Not to mention the other riders and drivers down there..............and especially others in oncoming lanes who end up in YOUr lane as you come around a blind corner.

Quite a few fatal wrecks happen down there at the dragon. Be careful whereever you go, my friend.

The 14R does not exactly shine on sharp corners at higher speeds.

I took an early retirement at age 54 ... Now much of my spare time is spent on the local roads.
My only regret is that there aren't 8 days in a week !
