Go Pro video cameras work great
09/22/09 9:49 AM

Bought a Go Pro last weekend and had to go try it out. The video was taken at Mt Scott in Oklahoma and what you'r about to see is a coaster race :)

Rules are turn off the bike, put it in neutral, one push and off you go. We did a rolling start this time because there were a bunch of cars behind us and we didn't want to piss them off. Camera was stuck to the side plastics with the suction cup that comes with the camera kit.

That is a great view and the camera finished cuts look clear. One thing though:

Pg. 9-43.

1. Find 15 in the circle twice, meaning, follow top [main shaft] number 15. Look for 15 in a circle again at the lower set of gears on the [counter shaft]. Note that m/s-15 is stopped with the crank. Main shaft has the clutch basket.
2. Now on the lower c/s-15, this gear will be locked with the stopped m/s-15.
3. Look at the center of both shafts. The drawing shows a short vertical line or drilled hole that lubes the stopped gear, not by splash, but by pressure thru both shafts.
4. idles and kill each minute for lube? I'd idle in N; coast down the mountain that way.
5. minutes of coasting without a pressurized lubed shaft; is more of a dry brass collar being chewed down or line scratched like the metal heats up, snowballs into gouging. Bits get in between the teeth, hold a gear is hold a rear wheel locked, if not bust the gear tooth off is whichever the scenario.

Probably not much wear, but be aware the freewheeler(s) need lubing.

Way cool!! Growing up in Lawton I've raced down that mountain more times than I could remember. Used to win lot's of money off the poor Fort Sill guy's back in the 80's on the old 750 Turbo, LOL!! But I've never even thought of coasting down. Did you notice what speed you reached on the long steep part almost at the bottom? On the gas you could hit insane speeds until you realized the road is about to end!!!!

Gears either slide on a shaft with the shift forks, or the 'freewheel' rolls on it's own bearing. Like the crank, this bearing needs to be lubed via pressure. Gears used to sit in a lot of oil and used splash only. Eventually, the evolution of the transmission parts were to make the freewheel last longer, forks slide easier, no more wobble of the freewheel bearing under splash, sounding and shifting sloppy. That forced feeding at that spinning bearing; is how you can tell the thick oil is dragging the freewheel bearing, along with the rest of the drag of teeth thru fresh oil.

See, the centrifugal spinning in splash, pushes oil away from the inner spinning bearing the gear floats on. Sure, the gears last, but with the bike being designed to use pressure for 15 holes all added up with both shafts needing that amount of lube areas, you still can coast downhill with an idling engine, feeding 15 pressurized holes during normal riding.

I coast a lot myself. But they are short and the lube is present enough on a dead engine coast for less than 60 feet, at the most. 5 minutes worth of coast would put me in a panic, if I did not light the bike off every so often during the 5 minutes, starting from the top to bottom.

Descifer... please.

Something very important ain't getting well lubed under idle speed oil pressure but that is fine if the bike is not moving. What ever part this is, it apparently only moves when the bike moves and that's when it needs riding rpm to properly lube.

I really need one of those cams. I want to make bike vids something fierce. What do you get with the purchase, just the lense and mount? This USBs into your camera that you carry in a backpack?

Nice to know Hub, won't do that again.

At the bottom I was going about 65-70 mph. If you can make it without cars slowing you down 85-90 has been done befor by my friends :)

The camera was $200 at Cycle Gear. Came with a suction cup/arm that can be mounted anywhere, 2 helmet mounts, 3-4 bases that can be stuck to anything. Memory card and batteries fit in the camera and its waterproof to 100 ft. A 2 gig memory card will do 1 hr of video which just so happens to be how long basic AAA battries last. I have a couple of cards and 2 sets of rechargable AAA's so its good for a days ride.

I bought the Motorsports HERO Wide

JB, I mean, still do it, but let the bike idle, then no prob. I have 5 camera mounts all tested well over 100

I will put my glued advancer mounted angle, against your suction cup piss runith over is the person behind you with the 4 wheels goes the camera we 100 past, no deposit and no return.

I have the camera tethered off something solid just in case = ALWAYS!

When racing was not happening during the weekend, a few of us would head up the Rock Store, ride to, "Stunt Road." We would shut the bikes off at the top of "Stunt" and coast down to the HW1 or close to it ocean. I had a '75 CB750 at the time. Working on bikes and transmissions all day, I knew about that oil feed at the main/counter shafts and would hit the starter every so often to lube the gears that spin in N.

We used to coast almost every time I'd hooked up with that, 'clique.' Plus I'd be on my own, farting around like that. Hey, to this day, I am still guilty of a plug chop "kill it" mentality, as I coast into the garage, almost as soon as I make the last turn on the street. Anyway some guy with a CB125 would always win. Fun times.

I doubt you hurt the gearbox any. Now, if you hooked the front wheel on the back bumper; the drive chain still rolling with the back wheel; hopped in the car to go cross country, then yeah; I'd say they are sort of mentioning that a tow like that might take out the freewheel bearings.

Oh no, I'll still do the coasting...just with the motor on :)

I duno, the little suck-tion cup has seen well over 150mph (so I'v heard...not that I'd ever go that fast...that would not be safe-n-stuff)It has a bunch of the litle sticky brackets but I don't want them all over the bike. I don't know where they came up with the cup but it sticks damd good to anything.

Seems like an o'k product but I'll be honest with you- I'm not impressed
with the quality of the video too much. It's no different than your digital
camera in video mode on a gas cap stem or such.
The sound is also not great with the mic picking all ambience noises but not the
sound of the motor and with no filtering for the wind blowing directly in it.
I'm sure bthe sound quality will be better if the camera is on the tank and shielded
by the windscreen.

Don't want to be all negative but just comparing to the many other onboard videos on the net.
I guess for $200 you can't expect it all to be perfect.
Seems like the suction cup mounting is a very cool feature and will allow some great
creativity with mounting points and such.
I want to see a video with it mounted on the lower fairings in some good twisties- I think
that will make your head spin! Or even the side of the front fender if it's light enough and
wouldn't interfere with steering.

JBird, work with it more and post some videos, I'm sure quality will improve as you get used
to what works and doesn't. Take a few pics of it mounted on your bike ( I guess with another
camera) and post them up.

Another thing is youtube fubars the quality quite nicly, lol. Go to Go Pro's website and check out their videos, they look better. It was the first time I ever used it so I wasn't 100% up to speed on what does and dosen't work. I'v been playing with it this week just shooting stuff when I go on lunch break. It's nothing fancy but it shows some places you can mount the little bugger on the bike. Quality wise, there's no way it and be camcorder quality...its only 2" X 1" X 1 1/2" big - smaller then most cell phones. It shoots better then my Sony bullet cam, about the same size and I don't have to plug it into a recording devise.

The sound is also not great with the mic picking all ambience noises but not the
sound of the motor

Ha ha, I just caught that...you can't hear the motor because its turned off, lol.

For $200 I might consider buying two and doing edited films with different angles.

Sound? I thought it was silent until I cranked the volume on my computer. Actually, I am accustomed to hearing a lot worse wind noise. The sound is a problem that all on board motorcycle vids. Be interesting to try an auxillary mic mounted by the exhaust. I'm sure that would still have major wind noise over 50 mph. I think that is a problem Hollywood has had to deal with ever since car chases were in movies. They have to do a fake soundtrack in 1st and second gear because the realtime audio just doesn't sound good.

JB, good pics and video. Thanks.

I just need to get one and mess around with it myself.
It would be great for track days if they let me use it.

There is a way to turn up the audio I just havn't got around to messing with it. The plastic box that the camera goes in blocks most of the wind noise. I'm also just using windows movie maker and wondering if a better editing program will keep the quality of the video better.

Here's a trackday video of one of the R6 Central guys and you can hear the bike pretty well. This video is what helped me pull the trigger on buying the camera.

http://www.vimeo.com/6539426

I need to go to the 1/4 mile and strap this to Slowninja's bike so we can all know what fast feels like, lol.

One of my riding buddies got one of these and I saw it in person
tosay on his Triumph Daytona. That thing is much smaller than expected
and the pics are quite decieving- it's actually twice smaller than the
smallest digital cameras I've seen around.

Took a few pics of it, out of the plastic case the thing is just tiny...

So, JBird, looks like you got the Motorsports HERO wide, right? I think wide is a better choice than regular but it would be great if you could switch lenses.

As far as HD or regular, which one did you get? What do you suppose the dif is? HD is less pixelated, hey? Doesn't look like they specify between vids shot HD and regular on their site. Thy all look similar.

I bought one myself. The regular wide angle hero.Very nice quality on the sound and vids.Could hear my bike very plainly, but not overly loud.Mounted mine with the suction cup on the left fairing-about where Jbird did.Took a very clear and wide, nice view.No vibration.Just ran mine on Windows Media Player 11-no prob.Vids turned out really nice.

What good would an HD be? On a larger screen, I suppose? Sorry, I am just not too much into electronics. Enough money is flying out of my butt on motorcycle stuff.

Mine is the normal, non-HD one...the HDs wern't out yet, bastards. Go to their video section and they have Hd vs. normal videos. The HDs have way better picture quality from what I can see. The HD camera can also use bigger memory cards and has mic inputs which the normal one dosen't have.
