Favorite signal meaning "Cop ahead"?
08/09/13 3:19 PM

I go with either:

Pat the top of the helmet as in "topper ahead", or, while holding the hand level over the ground (at my side), lift my hand up 'n down, as in "slow down".

The first one seems like it might be obscure, because I've had some ask me "what are you doing"?, "signalling a cop ahead", "oh, I dont get it..."

But, the second signal, slow down, seems pretty good, I think most riders get that one.

Trouble is, that one does not work on the freeway at 70+ MPH. For that, I throw my arm in the air, straight up. It's unusual enough to get the most attention from the opposite side of the median (and is not just a "friendly wave").

But, that one is obscure, too. It doesnt say "cop ahead" definitely.

You got anything?

flashing your brights...that works.Patting the head...yup...good one there.I had a cage driver(actually,a few over different times)coming in the opposite lane...flashing their brights at me...first,I didn't know what the heck they were doing that for...then up the road...a Patrolman had a car pulled over...it made sense then.Only fast azz streetbike riders would probably get ANY of these signsLOL!No worries on a rolling couch;)

I was riding through Arkansas last weekend, and a guy in a cage ahead of me that I was coming up on fast puts his hand out of his window, pats the roof of his car, and points ahead. I picked up right away what he was telling me and sure enough he was right on. I figured he must have been a rider... pretty good lookin out.

yep patting the head has always been universal where i'm from, also the 5.0 sign (five fingers then a fist) was pretty common in my area.

The best one I've ever learned is when riding with Romans....
He drops the left and with fingers facing backwards and wiggles them.
First time I saw it after I caught up to him, I asked him - what the hell does that mean with the fingers?
He says... what do you do with your fingers and the ol' lady?..... "lets play" he says.... God, I nearly laughed myself off the bike....

though this has nothing to do with cop ahead.... I just found it funny and didn't know where else to share.... lol
sorry guys.

Flashing the lights to warn of a speed trap is now illegal in some places. Tap on the head.

When I see a cop, I pull the throttle back with my right hand, accelerate and as I pass that asshole, I shoot him the bird, or take both hands off the bars and give him an italian fist up over one crossed arm. Then I tuck, pull and disappear. In my helmet i mumble bye bye loser!

Caroobs mentioned Arkansas. I live there and it is customary here to flash lights to warn oncoming traffic to check their speed, if any patrol cars are in the area.

Flashing the lights and an overt head spin to look back over the shoulder. If its a fellow speeder, he'll know.

BTW, had a cop flash his lights at me one time coming the other way around a corner. There was a second cop parked in a speed speed trap around the bend. Mighta saved me a ticket. .....so some cops can be very cool....they don't want us to know.

Head pat works for me. Seems to be the most widely accepted cop signal.

As for light flashes, I don't care about warning cars. Like my highschool football days, when it comes to looking for traps, I worry about the pac of men I ride with and that's where the concern begins and ends...

If I'm riding alone, my above stated philosophy is in application. The radio to the car ahead is a useful tactic, but I try to switch direction right quick, and avert the next "friendly!"

Here in my area, they just bought a brand new shiny helicopter...This does pose a challenge. I guess they should be allowed to play fair!

Ahhh, unless they bought that French copter, ur fing bike is good. Again, its all about the fear inside the man operating their machine. Immediately forget all else and just FOCUS on the road ahead, I start immediately like in chess planning six turns ahead. Then I keep just riding my bike to a safe maximum for road conditions. Forgetting all the other players on the board. Mere distractions between me and corner speed. Straight line speed I got. I want that big corner speed now wolf, I wanna carve/slice those apexes maintaining maximum velocity as I feed it in coming vertical. That fella in the copter and/or dude in car has about 14 distractions goin on at once with the radio and his adrenaline and communicating and trying to drive that pos. they arent that good. they dont have a bunch of high level mofo's like us running around in pig suits. its a head thing, men with brains dont turn to 'law enforcement' for ego gratification mom and dad forgot to give(NOW I JUST MEAN TRAFFIC PORK IN PARTICULAR). If all I do is focus for about 5-7 minutes, 10 at the outside, whatever else was going on, I just check mated a pod of pork. :)))) the only way we get fucked is if they get a plate, a pic, or we lose focus and fuck ourselves.

I have heard that a few times. It's considered obstructing justice. I don't see how anyone would catch you warning anyone if you were driving away from the speed trap unless it was night time. ...or if there was a second cop behind the guy coming at you that you were warning (in which case said guy is prolly busted anyway). I avoid flashing the lights to warn at night. I don't see a lot of speed traps after dark. ...although I have seen at least a couple and it looked insanely dangerous for all motorists passing by.

Generally when lit up, I just focus on the road ahead and the power delivered to the road. All else disappears in the mirrors. Then off the throttle and on with the mission!

Just for argument sake, making a judgement against someone flashing their lights, how is such a judgement supported with evidence in court?

How can they even pin this one on someone!

Last, the only flashing lights you will see from me, is a set or rear lights disappearing over the horizon!

Carry on, my two cents

Just some reading for those who have never heard of illegal flashing. I don't pretend to know everywhere it's illegal, and as you can see, in Florida, it was recently declared legal again.
