Who has them, what brand do you have, and do you like them? I'm wondering pros and cons versus full face helmets.

Look sorta gay (imo)

Pro:
You can flip it open to talk to someone... while you are looking gay ;-)

I would have said, as a pro that a lot of them have drop down visors in the helmets, but a lot of brands have that now, including Shoei.

I've always been a full face helmet kinda guy, but the look/ease of use of the flip ups may be growing on me.

I wonder though if safety is compromised in case of a crash since they are 2 pieces.

I don't have one, but if you can afford it, a Schuberth C3 is suppossed to be one of the best ..

I heard they can come apart during a crash and leave your face out, my buddy loves his but he doesnt ride as much or as fast as I do, full face for me I will just talk a little louder when the time comes.

I can't hear with ear plugs in anyway. Less talking and more practicing of the "HicK" breathing technique.

I bought my first flip lid last winter, a Schuberth C3 Pro, and I'd never go back to a 'solid' full face. Couldn't really give a crap about the latest, multi coloured race rep any more. For me it's now all about comfort and practicality. JMO

Nolan N90 is supposed to be a good one too, $199 at competition acc.

Flip up, never appealled to me, beyond the practicality and function. I love the movie biker boyz, smoke had one that was cool!

I bought a cheap (economical)one a few years past. Loved the versatility and ability to ride with the option of opening up frequently to talk or to just let in some air or to take a cold drink from a glass or to scratch my cheek, or to spit, etc. Very good option for ordering in the Mickey D drive up line!

Didn't like the weight, cheap construction, weak closure on the chin piece and lack of safety ratings. Discouraged long and or fast trips because of this.

Am now considering, after my last two 500 to 800 list full face helmets, purchasing a new one. Schuberth has been mentioned but HJC has one that is nearly as highly rated in reviews and is lighter. They have come a long way.
The better ones close securely and meet or exceed DOT, ECE and maybe even the new Snell although the Snell rating has its detractors.

Believe my next lid will be a modular and if they are as good as they say; I will never go back. I'm far too old and otherwise focussed to care how anyone thinks I look; especially whether they think I look "gay" or not. Maybe if I was still in high school and insecure about my image; that would bother me, LOL.

Do a little research; the reviews are beginning to be commonly posted and try one on; you may find it to your liking and capable of meeting your requirements.

I have noticed seeing more of them. I love the functionality, if they could find a way to be reasonably as safe as normal full face helmets I think I'd get one for sure.

btw Paul, I'm in the far northern chicago area too in a town called Libertyville.

Hey neighbor! Is your 14 blue also? I saw one today, I think and I have been told that another blue one is in the county. I'm in Lake Villa.

Ride out in Fox Lake area a lot and love to get into SW WI to get out of the county; every county road is mostly all dble yellow line as you probably know! And the traffic is truly dense; not to mention its all "copped up" regularly.

Anyway, I occasionally get to Libertyville and used to work there a bit. Do you ever go to the brkfst sites on Sunday's?

You couldn't tell it was a modular unless you stood right next to me. Looks like a race helmet, fits great but it's the loudest helmet I've owned. I have two Bell Helmets and they're both crazy loud. The ventilation is great and they have some cool designs. But did I mention they're LOUD...lol

Mine is black, just uploaded pic to my avatar. I've have kids and am just wrapping up a degree so I have not been able to do much of anything in the past few years, let alone breakfast lol! Sounds like a good idea though.

I'm still looking around this area for a nice long (2+ miles), flat straightaway with few cars/cops/crossroads. I'm hoping up near 120 or further north there will be some of that when you get into more of the country.

Anyway, back onto modular helmets. It sounds like the technology has come far enough that there are a few decent players in the market with nice safe helmets (DOT approved at least). I may consider one of these, Nolan and Bells both look pretty good.

for spec wearing riders they are a boon, been using a caberg filp-up for a few years now, power ranger types with their expensive race reps, in the main are just posers imho, if the lid is star rated some of the cheaper versions get a better write up for safety, noise level and fit.

They already have. Flips have been available for a number of years now and are as safe as a full face lid IMO. Police riders use them. If there was any question regarding the helmets safety, they certainly would not.

Homophobia notwithstanding, they are a little heavier than a regular full-face, but I have never heard of one coming open or apart in a crash. I totalled a bike several years ago wearing a Shoei Synchrotech and it did it's job perfectly, so I wouldn't hesitate to get another modular helmet. I have pretty well made up my mind to go that route as soon as this Shoei Qwest I'm using now reaches the end of it's useful life. Some are now designed to run either open or closed and they're getting lighter all the time.

I have the Bell Revolver EVO, which is apparently an updated version of the regular Revolver, from what i've read.

I like the looks of the helmet, and I love the flip up feature.

Some like em, some don't.

But, to each his own.

I dig the flip ups..Shoei I think makes a sexy one! On the helmet note, next lid will have blue tooth, phone functionality.

Sound is great from my in-helmet speakers; gotta secure just right in the helmet so they don't rub/press the ear; but then they are great. I am not a fan of ear phones(buds, plugs, etc.); they give me that closed up feeling that you might have the memory of from childhood earache treatment with drops and cotton plugs?

Oh well, even if that is a foreign experience to you, you might be able to imagine it. The modular helmet with the helmet bluetooth communication system is exactly what I have in mind for my next gear upgrade.

The Nolan (I believe) has its own proprietary communication system that the hemet is configured for but I see no reason that a standard communicator module couldn't be attached behind the hinged chin guard. My system comes with a flexible boom mic that is plenty long and if it would turn out to be too short for application, it also has a simple cabled option for more variation in mic placement.

I bought the Shoei multitec brand new for $230 last summer. I like it, but I still prefer the full face shoei. The flipup is looks bigger, seems to catch a little more wind and has no graphics. I wish I would have gone ahead and gotten a new RF1100 instead.

Not a full flip, but the shield is large, plus it has a built in microphone.
