The felon scenario crossed my mind, late at night, gentle thud of jackboots as PD comes crashing through your front door. In that case though, folks would be subpoenaed and the truth would eventually come out under oath.

Bottom line is I screwed up, none of the guys that bought the bike are technically responsible except for the final guy that crashed the toll booths. He is guilty of a class C misdemeanor for operating a motor vehicle without proper registration. I could track him down and nail his butt but is it really worth it?

Lesson learned, I will never forget this or repeat the experience, you guys won't either!

I am sorry you had to learn this the hard way, Kruz. It truly sucks!

I didn't learn anything from this. I've been riding 50 years. Have purchased and sold many used bikes. ALWAYS did a bill of sale before I signed the title, and always took the tag off.

California and other states have wanted the "dead" plate back, but I never gave it back. So I have them hanging in my garage, along with car tags ranging from California to New Mexico to Alabama to Georgia to Maryland, to New York, and a few others.

Which shows that old guys like me have wisdom that young guys usually don't. I'd rather have wisdom than adrenaline and big loud words because it helps keep me from making mistakes we all make/made in youth.

i don't think you guys understand 1 thing .. couple a years ago a new tax law was passed ... in the state of Texas if you buy a clear title ANYTHING from a private seller .. the state of Texas has their own price on what to charge you on taxing it to transfer it .. its called an excess value fee and its no NADA book its the State's own black book values .. and to change their value fee you need to pay a dealer $200.00 to appraise the vehicle... which if you purchase a bike thats crashed for 2,000.00 with a bill of sale and show it to them .. its worthless.. they can say its worth 10,000.00 and you must pay tax 8% SALES TAX PLUS THE FEE on that price to transfer.. thats why nobody is transferring titles no more unless your gonna keep it .. when they go to the court house to register the item and discover the outrageous price .. most people say screw it I'll sell it ..

Not sure, but I think Texas was late to the party. Been that way on the east and west coast for a long time.

After we got married, I sold my wife's old car. a '72 Maverick. Several years later I got a notice from the Chicago Police Dept. that we had about $3K in unpaid parking tickets. Apparently they had traced the VIN back to me and the jerkwad I sold it to never transferred the title. I sent them a copy of the bill of sale and never heard another word. I hope they popped his ass.

Sounds like you learned your lesson, but don't feel bad. It happens to the best of us. I have let someone purchasing my bike, keep the tag 1 time. In that instance, I had them mail it back to me, and I turned it in. On the other hand, I have purchased 2 bikes, 1 car, and a 14' enclosed trailer this year, all with tags left on them. I turned all tags in when I registered the vehicle, and kept the receipt for proof. I do have one trailer that I purchased to haul mulch with (5x8). I asked the seller if he wanted his tag, and he said no. I use the trailer twice a year, to haul mulch from a guy 3 miles from my house. I never turned in, or renewed the tag. In fact, the title is still in his name, just signed over to me.

Same BS here... Got screwed on a truck I bought for $8k and then charged tax on $14k... Even with a signed Bill of Sale.

Then, I learned about the "Declaration of Value" form that can be downloaded from the WA DOL website. If signed by the seller, it overrides the states "black book". It's basically just a Bill of Sale, but in the format they need in order to accept a lesser value than they estimate. Gotta jump through the hoops they put in front of us.

me and you both on a truck ..i purchased a 2001 f250 4x4 lariat for 7,500.00 .. when i went to transfer they said its worth 23,500.00 and i had to pay 1,600.00 + fees.. bill of sale was worthless.. i sold the truck ..found another lesser truck for 6,500.00 at a dealer and had OTD FOR 6,837.00 .. it was the same with the zx10 they wanted to rape me for 900.00 to transfer..

but i guess thats what we get for people buying almost new BMW convertables and claiming a 500.00 sales price and putting farm tags on it

Badzx14r; Riding around with someone else's plate, and then selling the bike with the plate...not cool.

Before your criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you do criticize them, you're a mile away and have their shoes.
