Hagrid:
I believe you, and trust you on your point.
Stuff like this really gets my attention, tho:
http://www.superduke.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=25023
(Crushed oil filter on a 1290 SD motor).
The post comes from the 1290 Super Duke forum, but its the same motor as the 1290 SA.
I get that the root problem is likely a failure of a pressure bypass function in the filter itself. It just highlights the point, for me, of complex systems that can fail... well, I sat here and attempted to figure what my point is, and I dont have one! Hahaha, I had a brain fart! Clear the room!
Edit:
Just got schooled on the Super Duke forum. The pressure regulation function / bypass valve, is not in the filter. Its in the motor, just upstream of the filter.
So, if the cause of the failure (oil filter crush / collapse) is really due to an oil over-pressure (pressure regulation failure), then it's motor related.
Not good for a new (2014) motor to exhibit this issue.

I went orange about 2 weeks ago...
Pro's:
- awesome engine, power, torque. If you like to wheelie... Look no further!
- egro's are great, comfortable
- looks great
- brakes are the best ive come across. Bremo all around
- integrated heated grips are a plus!
- Stock exhaust has a great note
- 3 modes of power, 3 ABS settings, traction/wheelie control
- very light
- great stock suspension
- easy maintenance
- easy to navigate Cpu menu
Negatives (im being picky)
- throttle... Takes getting used too. Cant adjust free play.
- first gear is short, makes for difficult launches... Have to slip the clutch alot more. I find myself stalling when i get lazy leaving lights.
- Anti-wheelie/traction control is under 1 setting. You cant turn off one or the other
- turn signal button is a pain to operate with big gloves, poor design
- fugly fender and exhaust
- 10w-50 oil... WTF...
- pricey aftermarket parts
- craptacular gas milage
- Traction control resets to default every time you turn off bike
At the end of the day i'll juat have to get used to some of the flaws. I am happy with the purchase, no regrets.

Good lookin machine
I wonder how it would fare against a Busa off the line.
I was down to a Superduke or Ducati Diavel but probably will just keep what I have. I realize ahead of time that The new would wear off those soon enough.
And having to drive all the way to St. Louis for parts for either of them would be a hassle As well

I can't speak for KTM, but my Husky is definitely higher maintenance than my 14R. However, it's much easier to work on. 3000 mile valve check intervals, new cam chain every 12,000 miles, etc.
The previous generation TE610 requires a top end rebuild around 30,000 miles. That's about the time most owners' bikes start smoking and losing power.
The TE630 is a completely new engine, but has a similar maintenance demand.
However, those two Huskies are basically heavy enduro racers with turn signals, not a big ADV bike.
I sold my ZX-10R and had the TE630 as my only bike for a couple years, and I quickly admitted that having it as my daily driver wasn't a good idea. That's what prompted me to get the 14R. Now I am putting a lot fewer miles on the Husky.

I've also cross-shopped the new Duc Multi-tool.
The journalist reports say the low speed / small throttle opening is sorted, great!
I've just never considered myself a Duc guy, tho I've also never rode one.
The complicated valve train maint puts me off some, I feel its likely out of my reach, skill-wise. Now, it's likely even harder to adjust. No one talks about that aspect of the new DVT system.
It is beautiful, tho, and I *could* get one today. Its July before the 1290 SAs will show up.
Sport bike wise, I'm thrilled with the 14R. ... and, it's already farkled!

Superduke Pros and Cons list cont'd......
Pros
-looks like a dirtbike for the street
-peeps be like... ugh is that a dual purpose bike?
-sounds like a harley on a roll on - if that's your thing?
-looks better than a black zx12r
Cons
-is that an enduro bike? no it's a sport bike! sheesh.
-pricetag
-has trouble keeping up with black zx12's and black z1000's
-does not wheelie as good as the z1000 (though in fairness could be rider)
-no electronic rider aides to correct operator highsides
-does not look as good as a black z1000
-must use rider aides to beat z1000's off the line

SDR lives off a simple diet of z1000s. Om nom nom!
Plus at least i can shift! Those kawasakis sure like to hit the rev limiter or miss shifts... Or could be rider error.
Z1000 suffers from constant wheelies, due to rider error I might add, and the fact it only has 4 gears. SDR mirrors allow pilot to view digested z1000s falling behind.z1000s also hate thier pilots so much they try to jump off stand and kill themselves.
My bike wants to challenge a zx12... however no local challengers to take on the KTM SuperHarleyAdventure Motocross. Come on Rocky, where art thou? I want to know if it will/will not.

Ya the only place i see it is in a la shop. As you wont challenge the KTM. Cutting off bikes on the higjway while they cruise does not account to a win! Well actually... There was a zx12 that i passed in a turn... So thats it then! The KTM IS faster than a 12! Thats all the convincing i need. A win is a win!

Would this be the turn I watched you almost high side and I hit the brake lights to avoid hitting you?
As for highway. I remember gobbling up a 1290 a few times well after they took off? Perhaps it's was not you. Maybe someone else rides a 1290 with a kaw jacket. My apologies.
As I said. Beautiful bikes!
As for in shop comment.

Didnt realise we were in a race at all... So you really had to give it to pass me leaving a light or while chugging along on te highway? LOL
Half Life Confirmed, Illuminati Confirmed, Wolfman is slow ... Confirmed.
Come out next time and we'll see how each bike compares. Hopefully you are not still sour about me not selling you the tires?? I really am curious to see what the outcome will be.
Ive mounted the z1000's headlight on my wall already (i blame rider error ) snd i hear the z1000 can eat the 12...

Correct, yes.
It's still a work in progress. I decided I'm attempting to solve a problem that I have not exhausted all options on the 14R.
Believe it or not, it comes down to noise levels. Even my daily commute was annoying my ears, and I've tried multiple different ear plug types (I own *alot* of ear plugs now, $100.00s...). None will stay put in my ears, while I'm riding. Stupid convoluted ear canals...
So, on to windshields. I bought the ZGST, and it's now for sale. It's a good shield, better than OEM in my opinion, but it's not best for me. I've got the MRA touring screen in place (and have not ridden with it yet: Durn busted collarbone, still on the couch here). That's not gonna cut it either, I'm just going by my eyes, but it's not enough. I got the X-Creen on the way, it will hopefully be enough.
I also got a Nolan N-104 Storm on the way, too, but I'm ignoring Mav's case-of-one failure to protect, to use it. Worth the risk? I dunno, but boy I hope so...
OK, so I'm whining about noise levels, I know it. This is what I do best (not the whining part :), but identifying a problem (*my* problem), and working through it. I'm so good at this, I have employment that pays me really good (6 figures) to do it for them (for very sophisticated electronic systems).
Over the last week 'n half, I looked at what it would mean, to me, to absorb a new cycle (at a price, and wow that price is high!), change to a new culture (goes with the change to Duc or KTM), fix the known issues (and solve the ones that appear), farkle as needed and learn to live with the results with all its warts.
*Then*, once all of that is sorted, sell a cycle to make room (omg, which one??).
That was alot of investigation, and prying open some lids on various sites, and mulling what I read and learned.
More than a few times, there were highly insightful comments right here, and they helped me enormously. I am *so thankful* to be welcome here.
After all that, I came full circle.
Again, it's just like a fine woman. I truely did not understand what I have, until I contemplate not having it (her).
I come to appreciate who lives with me, and yeah one of her lives in the garage right now. (Not my pretty wife, you dummy...)
Want to understand what I'm talking about here? A simple experiment: Picture your true love, right now. Clarify that picture in your head, every line, every pulse of heartbeat (OK, it can be your cycle whatever). *Feel* what your head and heart tells you, right then 'n there, right at that moment. Now, kill her in an accident, any accident, in your head. If you're not a sociopath, it will feel exactly like she *really is* dead. Feel *that*, and pass the test. I cant do it myself, without pratically bursting into tears. I'm telling you, I learn something, and it *hurts*. *Bad*.
These ideas take time to learn and appreciate. It's why I choose to write about them here.
Silly, stupid, right? Yeah, I know. But, I'm still on my 14R and I know *exactly* why I am.

Hey meb go to audiologist and have custom earplugs or earbuds made. I have both and they are perfect for riding.

Meb ... since you need help, and you do need help
If you haven't already tried this: With a pair of the cheap, disposable Home Depot ear plugs ... roll one between your finger and thumb to squish it a little, smoothly, to a smaller diameter ... do this move while holding it right next to your ear, then quickly before it re-expands to original size rotate it into your ear with your mouth wide open ... this makes my ear canal slightly larger. Others have told me it does for them, too. Once it's in, when I close my mouth and the foam ear plug re-expands to full size, that really plugs my ears good. Sometimes almost feels like they're in too deep
Good luck with however it goes for you ... You sound like you might even be more analytic than me. Good luck with that!
Oh CRAP, all those words I typed, and I just found a video ... although I see he doesn't mention opening your mouth.
