"Good info on running. I shouldn't assume that all cops have enough brains to give up before they get in over their heads. I think holding a suspect responsible for cops stupid choice to pursue at high speed for nothing more than street racing is a pile of . They do not EVER have to choose to put themselves in danger. I feel for that poor guys family but lets face it, there's a good chance he wanted to go fast and he picked on non threatening, non armed, fleeing prey to get his rocks off (speed rush or authority issues). He should have stopped and radioed.

I can't help loving to go fast. I try to do it as safely as I can. yeah I would feel terrible if my fun lead to a friend's death or a cop if either was stupid enough to drive beyond his own limits."

So you wouldn't mind if I chose not to pursue a criminal that just robbed you, or murdered a family member then, since I don't want to get killed chasing someone? And it's not "getting my rocks off"...I hate pursuits. It's definitely an adrenalin dump and a pulse quickener, but it's damn sure not something I like doing. Should we only pursue the crinimals that YOU think are important to catch? The ones that break the laws that YOU think is important? Pursue noone? Pursue everyone?

I go over the speed limit on my bike, and if I get caught it's on me. And if I decided to run and got caught, it's my fault too. Not the police because they decided to pursue me.

This IS a dicey subject for sure...filled with 'hopefuls'...things that we HOPE wouldn't happen.I never thought I'd wreck my bike...it just didn't really occur to me.But stuff happens beyond our control.I think maybe a guy gets to a point of realization somewhere along his biking career that he's really not calling the shots...though he thinks he is.This year...I'll be being alot more careful with my new bike and following the speeds posted. That's not to say I won't ever go into triple digits...I know I will...but it won't be like before....and I'm not afraid of crashing....it's rehab and all...the loss that happens...the going through all the stuff to rebuild a life...just not worth that to me anymore.I do love to ride fast though...can't take that away.I mean...on the street...other drivers and all are NOT expecting something to go passing em at 150...it's scarey for em.I couldn't live with myself if I wrecked into a cage and killed someone...or maimed em...let alone a family or somethin. You don't 'control' a bike at these speeds...it's all happenstance...what ever happens. And it gets ugly very quick....and irreversible as well.Just not worth it to me.

The quality of these 14's is so good...you tend to start thinking you're totally safe and in command. You're not.ANYTHING can enter the picture and screw things up in a heartbeat.Course...we all KNOW that...that's part of the thrill of riding these bad birds;)Ah...I'm just musing really...everyone rides how they choose...we all know the consequences. No hate here.

Just so ya'll know...when I say "you're' or 'we'...I really mean ME.I've taken way too many risks along the line since owning a 14 way back when....lucky to still be here really.I hope everyone will have a safe and fun riding season this year...so we can talk about stuff on through to the next year and all.;)

I agree totally with KB's last statement there...it IS on me when I'm riding.What I do...how I ride.

The problem is, that we have no where to go legally fast, like in Germany, they have the autobahn, and it covers a lot of the country, and it is not open to discussion, like many things, nothing ever changes here ...

Sure, no one wants people ripping around on crowded city streets, but there are areas that could be used, but the sad fact is, that they make alot of money off speeding ...

So you wouldn't mind if I chose not to pursue a criminal that just robbed you, or murdered a family member then, since I don't want to get killed chasing someone?

kb, no offense to the cool folks of Alabamy there but I've lived on the near west side of Milwaukee and trust me, there are no cows and what's left of the brewing industry is not pretty. What I'm sayin's is I LIVED in an urban crime center and I KNOW what the police do about drug deals, shootings, rapes, domestic issues....

they stay the fuck out until it's safe. We called the cops about a stranger entering the house. They showed up next day. Neighbors called the cops reporting burglaries in progress. They didn't respond until long after the call. They don't have to put themselves in harms way and I have had a couple tell me that they simply will not go to a crime in progress because they often end up getting shot. The busts I saw were well planned in advance and involved an army of cops. That's the reality of it. You don't really protect us. It's an illusion. At least here in my town. Glad I don't live in the ghettto any more. Cops will come here where people are not crazy. Safer.

...So lets not confuse an obvious speed thrill seeker running his ass away from the police half because he thinks what he did was not all that bad------with a brutal criminal trting to avoid going to prison.

...I hate pursuits. It's definitely an adrenalin dump and a pulse quickener, but it's damn sure not something I like doing.

I have to believe you. I'd be scared to death if I thought or knew it was an armed and dangerous robber. I guess I would follow at as safe a distance as I could. That's what you would do wouldn't you? Guy on bike speeding, I'd chase him and enjoy it. If I could catch him. Have to admit, that guy needs a ticket just to set an example. Can't have everyone run for everything.

Should we only pursue the crinimals that YOU think are important to catch? The ones that break the laws that YOU think is important? Pursue noone? Pursue everyone?

Pursue everyone but don't give speeding tickets to people who are going fast in a safe area.....or at least give them a huge break. That's what I'd like to see. Yes I DO feel I know what laws are important and which ones are there to generate revenue under the guise of public safety.

I go over the speed limit on my bike, and if I get caught it's on me. And if I decided to run and got caught, it's my fault too. Not the police because they decided to pursue me.

Agreed. I would never say I don't like cops for doing their job. ...just wish things were different. Most of the job is waiting to nab motorists, not dangerous criminals. Oh well, who didn't grow up to find their job was a little less exciting than they thought it would be as a kid? I've been down that road 3x now. business is business and if it's risky, most won't do it long. Same goes with popo. I'd do the same they do and enjoy my decent paycheck, benefits and many opportunities for career advancement. business. just sayin.

BTW, if you are a cop speeding, you have a lot less reason to worry about getting stopped by another cop. Seriously, when is the last time you heard of a cop getting a speeding ticket?

...especially off of guys on sportbikes when they get caught.

I've NEVER recommended anyone to run. trc, I think I preached to you several months back, DO NOT RUN. ....but that was only because I think it is unlikely that anyone will get away unless conditions are ideal. I don't know all the secrets but one is to lose 'em fast and another is to avoid long open stretches of road. Nebraska does not sound like a good place to run.

I think about the ONLY way a guy could escape...would be to offroad it.Take a side road...shoot up into the woods or somethin.Unfortunately...the 14 doesn't led itself well to dirt tracking!Even with Kskid! She's got gobs of HP to make a run for it...yup...but she can't cut the mustard on them dirt paths.

RE: My Dream

Well since the thread turned into a running from the police thread like I didn't want I will comment. I was originally charged with, 100+mph in a 30(the cop wasn't close enough to clock me) Improper passing and passing up the middle(once again dropped like the speeding because the cop wasn't close enough to confirm) then there was willful reckless driving and when combined with fleeing to avoid arrest they both become felonies. Where I live it's relatively small (20,000 people) My lawyer who also has the unofficial title of the devils advocate got my final charges reduced to reckless driving and failure to obey a peace officer. I received 5 points on my licence and $500 in fines.

I was with two friends one on a R1 and one on a GSXR750. We we're driving through town on the local cruising lap when they began to accelerate. I followed. As we approached a turn I was greeted by a nose diving dodge charger. I made the split second decision that I was not going to stop. I accelerated on the straight to about 150. There were no cars that I encountered on the chase. I then took a left turn and accelerated again. Thus time the road was much longer and the bike hit the limiter. As I was slowing for a turn onto the highway I was suddenly emerged in a bright white circle. I knew what that was instantly. I looked back to see the cop miles back. I knew I was caught so I pulled into an empty parking lot had my information ready and my hands up. I would prefer that out of respect for me that unless you have a specific question for me please revert back to 500 horsepower ZX14Rs ;)

Nah you just need to be somewhere with windy roads...

Don't try this in NE, or FL LoL

If I could ride in the expert group and was caught on a windy road, I would definitely take my chances.

Mordy, Mordy, hold one here. You are "ASSUMING" people are going to get hurt, plow into someone, cause property damage all on an assumption. Out of 7 years of the 14, no one has gone to jail, no one has been killed or killed someone. Just stupid 'accidents' that usually can be traced back to some other issue, not the bike/car having the problem.

So do we all stop driving, riding, holding something that will poke our eye out, or cause something smaller than an elbow into damaging the ear? Say WOT??? LOL

Speaking of opposite direction, (forgive me if you've heard this a couple times already but I just love this) I passed a cop while I was doing 130 and racing a Corvette. Thank you God, he was parked o the Southbound side of the expressway and cut off from entering our side by a cement wall median. I was tucked way down and the Corvette rides even lower. We never saw that cop until we were on top of him. He must have been sh-ttting his pants wondering where the scream was coming from. NOrth South WTF???? LOL He spun th e lights about a half second after we all made eye contact....and edged out on the road then jammed on the brake. Where the hell did he think he was going? LOL I slowed down for about a second then eased back on the gas and kept 'er rolling at 100. Exited two miles ahead. Vette went his way and I went mine. I went home and called Kruz....half wetting myself and half euphoric.

That's the kind of chase I dream of. Yep, Grn, you're right there are a lot of "hope this" and "hope thats" involved in a chase fantasy. I'm sure they don't all go the way we want or we'd all be doing it fairly often.

I don't condone running, I'm a responsible adult (just don't ask my wife LOL) but there are some roads where stoping is just plain stupid. My rule is: if a copper is directly behind me and light me up, I'm stopping...
I remember riding with a harley and a CBR 600 about 2 years ago. The cop pulled behind us and was getting ready to light us up. I just gave it a little bit of throttle (not aggressively, smooth below 5k) just enough to get some separation between me and the harley. The Harley got the ticket! The son on the CBR was long gone LOL

..eh, I think that guy just made an abrupt throttle cut after he was already totally committed to that corner. He starts to straighten up and looses it. I'm guessing the cop car took all of his concentration and he just forgot what he was doing. It just takes a fraction of a second and then you are riding on a hope and a prayer.

The Harley got the ticket! The son on the CBR was long gone LOL

it really sucks being the slowest. Hope he got a warning.

Yeah. I feel the same way about pursuit. If he's not behind you, you don't know who he wants to pull over....in fact, you might say you don't know he's there if he is not behind you for a few seconds at least.

I had a cop pass me doing over a hundred one time. I never knew he was there until he was at my side. I wonder if he had his lights going at any time? Loud exhaust, in a tuck....you could have an earthquake chasing you and not know it. Well that cop just gave me a mean stare as I cut throttle and leaped up off the tank.

Of course it always bears mentioning whenever on the topic, there is some pretty sophisticated imaging and data equipment in a traffic cop's car these days. He might not have to really catch you in order to nab you. I guess it would need to be proven that it was you operating the vehicle.

Wow I missed quite the dialogue. Running from the cops, speeding and regearing for a goal to supe up a 14. I posted a little ditty a while back, about being met at my place by the police. I had experienced the asshole cop trying to turn a little bit of fun into more than what it was, ie I pulled over for him, he flew by then met me in my driveway. But more to this, look, I get up at 4 or 5 am and hit a toll highway, one of my favourites is the 407 and there is a strip of it, where I can view way ahead and have a couple of kms to blast. When the roads are clear of commuters and traffic, I open up my bike. There is another strip on the 404 where the highway begins, and therefore no cop can sit behind you and you have more than a quarter mile before the next exit (usually early mornings on Sunday's you are completely alone. During early morning runs, I open her up there too. I am sure there are relatively safe places to push a bike. As for riping it up on a busy highway, that's really up to the operator of the bike. Look if you want to take that risk, than that is your choice to make. The odds of injury or death are stacked against you, however, we could all die getting out of bed. I usually remind myself before I get on the bike that I have two kids and I could die just to reaffirm the care and attention it will take to arrive back home alive (considering it's the soccer mom on the mobile smart phone who will end us all as she BBM's her husband). I don't hate racers, and I don't diss people for posting crazy anedotals. I am just mildly suggesting that there are places and times when one can have a little fun and mimimize (paradox) some risk. In the end I think taking the bike to the track, if you feel your pushing too hard on the road, is a great idea! Keep the shiny side up!
PS this is a forum, we don't police content, and we all have the right to our own opinion. It should be said, we are not going to agree on many points, but championing our view over another person and hailing insults is in my view arrogant. That said, some arrogance does make for entertaining reading.
Cheers to all,
Wolfman
