Well...guess that 'bout sums it up.Use a TQ wrench to get it exact.Definitely can't go wrong there;)

I feel after a few of these bolts have been tightened..and IF a guy's paying attention...he can get it close by feeling the snugging and such.I've never been afraid to ride my bikes just tightening by feel.NOW...I wouldn't do it like this if I was working on a motor or something like that.

Something like front fork axle pinch bolts...you have the axle tightened for one thing.Then the pinch bolts...tightened according to the manual sequence.It'd be VERY unlikely for the axle to come loose with 4 bolts and a tight axle nut.You feel something wrong anyway if it did start to shift...the caliper and pads would begin to grip...or make noise.Not mention it wouldn't be feeling right in the steering.A spinning front wheel isn't gonna snap those calipers off there.That's my thoughts on it anyway.

I go for a ride(to wherever)...then back home...I sometimes check again just to be sure.But I've never had one back out...or loosen up.I do this with sprocket bolts...caliper bolts,pinch bolts.If I've changed discs,I recheck again after a ride.Never had any issues with those either.Shock...same thing.I check the link bolts and such periodically.Occasionally the lower fork tube pinch bolts.In 20 something K miles on my 14...I've never had any bolts work loose.And I've never used a TQ wrench on it.

A bolt stretch gauge can only be used when said bolt is torqued to spec and you have clear access to both ends, such as with conrod bolts.

Saying a bolt will stretch when correctly tightened is misleading. A correctly tightened bolt will NOT stretch unless it is designed/made to be a 'stretch bolt'. Stretch bolts are torqued to a setting beyond the point of their elasticity and are usually 'once only' bolts requiring replacement after first use. Over tightening of the front axle pinch bolts would probably result in the stripping out of the thread in the alloy fork bottom before the bolts themselves stretched. A far as the rear axle nut goes, IME the slots in the castle nut rarely line up with the hole in the axle end when the nut is torqued to the exact torques setting in the manual which states that the nut should be tightened further if the slots in the nut do not line up with the hole.JMO

Used my new clicker type torque wrench last night to tighten / check all 4 of the pinch bolts. The right-side pinch bolt brother to the one that was about to fall out did need a little tightening, but wasn't close to falling out

Still don't have a 22mm hex socket, so have not been able to check the front axle's torque. "Seemed" tight, tho i.e. not about to fall off anyway.

I hadn't mentioned it so far, but during last Sun's ride (after which I found the loose bolt) was the first time I felt a little "sway" in the front end, while following my riding bud, in let's just call them 'high speed curves' on very remote county roads. Not a huge, bike upsetting feel like I was gonna be thrown, but enough that it caught my attention and caused me to let up just a skosh, and then resume the ride. Never had that happen in 5K miles with the OEM tires. I chalked it up to imperfections on the new PR4 GT tire(s) ...

All bolts stretch. If they didn't, they would never tighten. Torque-to-yield fasteners are one time use yes, but ALL bolts stretch.

all else fails sarcasms fly and everybody is an ass licker, hahaha....

Oh... I'm in the camp that all bolts stretch.

Also marking a bolt where it was before removing can be a valid aprx. torque setting
when reinstalling as long as you're sure it was torqued correctly when last installed.

I torque everything, every time, a lesson learned from my youth.

If I don't like the torque setting I'll loctite or safety wire it versus
adding a couple extra pounds.

Then again, I know for sure my brain is stretched.

Dan has really pretty and soft hands, and hasn't worked a hard day in his life. So calling him a carpenter was incorrect. He works with carpenters, but stays clean and doesn't lift a finger.

Bolts stretch. If you don't get that, use nails.

No. It's the friction between the threads that tighten and hold the bolt. That's why a bolt with bad or chewed threads feels tight. There's no way a M6 or M8 bolt tightened to 15lb/ft is going to stretch. JMO

Another jimmielie. I worked with my tools for over 30 years-framing, roofing, concrete, piledriving, drywall, metal studs, not to mention casework, cabinetry and even a little millwright work ovehauling gas turbines. Unlike him who does an oil change on a semi-truck and washes his hands three times in the process, I was working for a living and raising a family while he was still stealing cars with his junior-high school delinquent friends. Some things never change.
