Rode over to my local Kawasaki dealer for a close look at a 14 R, he had one on the floor in blue for $14157 drive
out. I talked to the mechanic and he told me the bike is very fast and will handle the Busa and older 14s no problem. Nothing new there. I looked the bike over pretty closely, nothing appears like it would fit the older machine with the possible exception of the rear foot pegs, clean sheet design but still manages to look like the old one.
OK here's my thoughts, good and bad. First, exhaust looks huge, dwarfs the old one. I imagine that's going to be the first thing to go. New clocks are pretty cool. Styling wise, I'm not sold yet. I always thought the old one was
nicely styled and a hard act to follow IMHO. Overall looks are OK but to my eye not really an improvement, different but not better. The bike looks bulkier much like the restyled Busa did when compared to the original. My '06 almost looked delicate by comparison. Bottom line, I still prefer the looks of the original.
Performance wise, I think it's been established the new bike has a definite edge and the TC, ABS and slipper are all worthwhile improvements. Would I trade in my '06 for a '12. Short answer is no. I didn't feel the excitement I felt when I first saw my bike back in '06. The new bike is different and arguably better in a number of key areas but not enough to trade in.
Please no flames or hate mail, these are just my opinions. I didn't get a test ride so that could have affected my observations. Since I'm a twisties guy not a drag racer so much of the changes would not be of great value too me. I have too much power already for where and how I ride. Meaningful improvements for me would include improved suspension i.e. stiffer, lighter weight and lighter wheels. If I was into drag racing then I would definitely be looking a one of these.
