Long Distance
01/21/12 7:17 PM

Hey all, hope the weekend is going well.
I'll be riding Babe the big blue Kaw to Texas in April. This will be my first long distance ride on a bike.
I'm looking at handle bar risers, probably Heli or Genmar.
I'd also like a bit better wind protection. I've seen double bubble and others that have a lip at the end of the screen. Are these better, worse or the same as bold on spoilers? Like these.
And last, any good ZX14 specific luggage or some that fits the big tail well?
Any advice on these things would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

I have the Heli risers on mine & love them. Just a little change, but makes a big difference on longer rides. I personally wouldn't do the bolt on spoiler, but never tried one. I have a Puig double bubble which looks like a lower profile than the MRA. MRA also have a decent looking touring screen (also available at Twisted Throttle). That would probably be the way I would go, but again, personal preference. I had Cortech soft luggage on my '06 which was decent quality, although took me a little to fit them just right. You didn't say where you were coming from, so not sure how long your ride will be. A top box like bean07 has is the way to go if you plan on a lot of touring. Especially if you will be making a lot of stops and worried about security.

My idea of sport touring... Sargent seat, Memphis Shades screen, and Nelson Rigg luggage.

Bean, does the whole thing come off when not in use? If so, I'd really like that.
The screens I've found are similar in price to the bolt on spoiler and probably the way I'm leaning. UKNixter, I'm coming from Denver and riding to north Texas. Going with a buddy on a R1200RT, He puts about 45,000 miles a year on his bike. We're searching for warm weather and nice roads that aren't covered in sand or snow.
Dogo, I'd never heard of Nelson Rigg till you posted. Their stuff looks nice. How much does the Memphis shade screen move air? It looks, in your picture, to have a similar profile as stock. It looks like you've got aftermarket rear sets too. Are they able to be adjusted lower? I've got a messed up knee, this bike is upsets it a ton less than my GSXR, but I've debated weather lowering the pegs may help make sure the trip is a good one.
Thanks again for your help guys. Very helpful!

Made the rack on the rear myself, use a gearsac bag on rear. On the front is a bagester tank bag and tank cover.

Do 3 days or 6 weeks it all fits, packing is an art form, I still take to much shit.

Dogo, I'd never heard of Nelson Rigg till you posted.

It's really nice stuff, IMO... and won't break the bank. Some good prices HERE.
Has a lifetime warranty... even if you crash it. . Haven't tested that policy though... hope not to.

How much does the Memphis shade screen move air? It looks, in your picture, to have a similar profile as stock.

It offers quite a bit more coverage than stock, but not as much as the true touring screens. It moves enough to get fully tucked behind in a down pour.

Had a Zero Gravity ST screen for my '06 that offered more coverage.

It looks like you've got aftermarket rear sets too. Are they able to be adjusted lower?

My rearsets are Vortex's. They offer a huge range adjustability, but I put mine all the way up & back and have not moved them since.
Pretty sure Rook measured and tested their full range. Hopefully he will chime in.

I would add a throttle lock to your list, I use Throttlemeister, it locks the throttle in place with a twisting motion. There are others. If nothing else, consider a cramp buster, it's a plastic paddle that install on the bar grip so you can hold the throttle with your palm and give your "grip" a rest.

I have long distance sport touring events, and lots of them, every riding season.

Last year I went from western Maryland to a) Mt. Snow VT for a week, b) Finger Lakes NY for 3 days, and numerous other 2- and 3-day rides. Plus a couple other 4-day COG events.

This season, I am going to Rhode Island NY, and Eureka Springs Arkansas, among other places. My mc has 3 3-day rides and 3 2-day rides scheduled already, and we aren't done planning yet. And I'm sure COG will put a few more multi-day rides on my shedule before spring arrives.

This is what I ride, that allows me to do 8+ hour days and very long distances, hauling gear to be out a week or more.....

I'll never say I have a messed up knee again, Bean. OUCH!
Thanks for the advice, Runner. I hadn't considered that yet.
Priv, what all do you have done. Looks like you can rack up some miles and maybe some TV stations on your bike. How do you like the spoiler on your windscreen?

Too much to list, Box. It goes as well as a stock 2012, is all carbon fiber but the tank, has GPS with XM NavTraffic and NavWeather, a factory gel C14 seat, variable BMW sockets x 2, heated grips, widened mirrors, and soon electronic cruise control.

The Vario extension really helped. I started with a ZG Sport Touring shield, and put the Vario on per instructions. One thing I found out, drill the windscreen on a warm to hot day. Heh.

Anyway, in the 50-70mph range, the air goes over the top of my helmet. Faster, and it comes down into the upper shield area. Slower, and I just don't feel much air at all.

I put a LSL handlebar conversion on it, and currently have a Spiegler/LSL Superbike High bar sitting on 1-3/4 up 2" back riser blocks which bolt onto the bar clamps on the LSL top clamp. About the same lean now as on a C14, maybe a degree more.

And the list goes on.

It is fast, still handles flawlessly (when the luggage is off), gets ok gas mileage, and came within a hair of being sold over the winter, which I am VERY glad didn't happen.

Hey DOGO ZX What a surprise seeing your bike in front of the pot shop. They have now moved it out of town and up the north bank of the Rogue river. My bar is just up the hill on the left just before the Ace hardware. (Sea Star) I have an 08 Atomic silver with 49K on it. Just picked up a 2012 Green 14 on Dec 17 and now have almost 2K on it. Will ride this Friday. No rain. Next time by stop @ Sea Star and I will buy you a beer. Ask for Bob.

Pot shop?

Won't be back down that way until Spring, but I'm gonna hold you to that beer.

Will do... that would be cool.

That pic was taken on the last day of about a week long trip... I'd stayed in Fortuna the night before, and was just blasting towards home. Didn't have time to explore... and stop a haircut.
