Any chance2013 ABS can be installed in 2012 14r?
05/02/13 1:51 PM

I locked up my front brake going into a slow turn......ABS would have prevented that....any way the dealer can order ABS parts that come on the 2013 and install it on the 2012?

If so, what kind of money is involved?

I can say ONE thing here...you'll need a 2013 ECU!The rest....should probably install just fine(looking at the
diagrams)...;)...it won't be 'cheap' either...probably well over the extra 200 dollars they charge for the 2013ABS models.

I think...mind you...I say..'think',the 2012 ECU has the programming already in there for an ABS upgrade...HOWEVER...it may take having someone get in there and enable the 'possible' program for it.Someone who can flash these ECU's and know what they're doing.I ran my 2013 with a 2012 ECU recently...all sytems worked..for about 10 minutes...then the abs quit working, the speedo stopped working...the engine lamp came on...KTRC got disabled...and the 'fuel MPG' calculations stopped happening.Hard for me to believe that the CAN unit 'remembered' all these settings(from the 2013 ECU) for ten minutes...then just said..okay...that's enough.SOMETHING was making those programs work for that long anyway.I looked on the parts fiche last night...the two ECU's are the same part number...EXCEPT...for the last four digits....obviously there are some differences with the programming...I assume.BTW...the engine ran fine...nothing changed with that that I could feel.Started right up....all systems working...then...bam....codes.Resetting by cycling the key worked...for ten minutes or so.(each time).

You could try sourcing the ECU and ABS bits from a UK spec 2012 parts bike. ABS was OE over here from launch.

Just learned from my friend AJ that ABS models are not intended to comply with certain slip ons, as the heat from the slips interfear with, or can disrupt the ABS (heat issue). In case you're running Yosh 77's like me - they are on the no list!
I was shocked to learn this fact.

There must be loads of '12 14R (ZZR1400) owner's over here that have been running after market cans without heat issues.

Five hundred dollars for a wire harness. Bucks for an ECU, unless it's generic and the wire harnesses are wireless or show no wire to the back of the plug. The AB$ box. The hardware to mount it. The ABS hoses out to the front of the frame, and those parts to keep the hoses in place. The rear brake lines that run from the box to the back brake, so those take over the brake hoses of the regular hoses used.

Next bike might come standard with ABS if not many bikes gradually moving to the next standard tech move. So pass on the upgrade. It may cost a few thousand buy the time you're finished, and that could have gone to the next bike [upgrade].

If say the [aftmkt] curve is close to the brake master/comma/hoses, then yes, we might have some sort of hot spot where the caliper or steel hose is being cooked too close.

IDK where your friend got his info from...my R-77's aren't affecting my ABS at all.Barely use the brakes as is..you know what I mean...they certainly are stopping my baby when she needs a good reign-in;)

My boy is running a 2013 special edition, he saw on Yosh website that the R77's should not be used with antilock system on the zx14r abs equipped. He showed me this on his phone (pulled up site) at Bike night this Thursday. It came up in convo, because I suggested he get the r77slips, and that's when he communicated this info. I am no expert, perhaps Hub is better equipped to answer this, but I did not see any wiring getting too close to hot exhaust bits. Just to confirm I heard this three days ago. There may very well be no need for concern, but I did see this disclaimer on his smart phone.
Cheers...
Email AJS he is on the forum if your curious about more info. It was new information for me!
