Gear indicator ... vs battery ??
09/04/17 9:00 AM

Gear indicator on my dash has started flakin' out: Usually happens when shifting, or just after, and the numbers jump around, usually + 1 gear, but sometimes more, before eventually settling on the correct gear after that 'hunting'. I realize now that this actually probably started way back and started in the form of displaying just a dash, instead of a number, as though I had missed a gear, when I hadn't.

Don't get me wrong: This isn't a huge problem ... but I got to thinking, cuz my battery tender recently started blinking red and never turning green, which indicates the battery isn't being charged. So I'm thinking my battery may be on its way out.

So the question: Could the gear indicator be affected by a dying or low battery? The bike runs flawlessly. I know these days with more and more modern electronics on bikes, a low battery can result in some seemingly illogical issues.

Thanks dudes ...

I'm going hunting too. Say we mode to battery on the dash and read what it says. Say we run a multimeter and read the static volts to the battery posts/cable/frame ground, and read under the red battery boot, because we don't want to read a current draw from say a hot wire and [frame] ground of your choice. Dash volts and static volts are two different readings.

11v/16v show on the dash if either extreme is present. 12.6v is minimum working range for a computer bike. Meaning, 5v is the working range for the black box. Lower voltage lowers the 5v range. Shift wise, we wearing different shoes/boots when the dash hunts for the gear display? Meaning, the shifting could be the hangup, not a dirty pin inside the GPS switch per say. Because the switch shows the gear eventually.

Bottom line, boot or battery. Switch keeps showing nothing wrong there... in theory.

It's easy to try another battery if you can borrow one. otherise you gotta buy one. Shorai---going on 8 years old now. works just fine.

If your voltage is good when your gear indicator is f-ed, I think it's the gear seb\nsor, not the battery

Thanks guys. As a quickie test ... since my well's pressure tank bladder broke yesterday I had to spend time fixing that instead of doing other things I needed and wanted to :( ... I swapped the battery tender for another battery tender that was steady green attached to my lawn mower's battery. When plugged into my 14's battery, it also blinks red. So, since I'm heading off on another NC riding trip with the 14 in 2 weeks, I think I'm gonna go ahead and get a new battery anyway. I suspect we'll find out it's both: Battery and gear sensor.

Regardless of your gear indicator problem if your battery tender continuously flashes red and never goes to green you need to replace the battery pronto before it strands you. I'll bet when you do it has a decent chance of fixing your gear indicator problem.
