The stupid things

that you have done or thought with the bike.

Right after I bought the used chrome wheels I found out that the back tire had a slow leak BUT before I figured it out I thought I had a breke dragging.

After the tires and wheels went on the bike had to sit for a week because of weather. When the rain finally quits and the sun comes out it is time to ride it to work and show off the chrome. I start to back it out of the gayrage and it is fighting me on trying to roll so I am thinking the brakes are dragging.

I take the beemer to work and will worry about the 14 when I get home. I fing out when I get to work that I have to do 12 hour days for the rest of the week so it is the next Sunday before I get to look at it. Sunday get here and back out to look at the 14. Still like pushing a 100 pound rock down a concrete drive way so let us start looking at the brakes. I pull the front lever and can feel them apply and release and the same with the back. I open the bleeders and very little comes out so I know there is hardly any pressure build up. The step son with less mechanical ability than me comes out to see what is going on and his conclusion was it sounds like a tire going flat on his car and the car will not roll by itself.
I have the 14 on the center stand so I 1st push in on the front tier and it is solid. I push in on the rear tire and it is not so solid.

Moral of the story is some people are not smart enuf to look for the simple things 1st.

Here is another that I could not believe I did. I had the rear of my ZRX1100 on a pitbull stand and when I took it off the stand I did not have the side stand down. I was holding onto the back of the bike leaning it to the left slowly and next thing I know the bike flipped me on the ground.
Luckily the slider and bar end took the hit with just a real small little rash on the front left turn signal.

How about putting carbs back on with an airbox and the last thing you do is go to hook the cables to the throttle and realize you fergotted to put them on the carbs first.

How about putting a new chain and sprockets on and after you rivet the chain back together you see the top and bottom of the chain are above the swing arm?

I dropped the 14 on the driveway in the first week. Forgot to put the stand down.

just recently, I thought I would be extra careful with my wheels because I know the shop throws 'em around like sacks of potatoes. I took off all my rotors and my sprocket so they could not be damaged. So I got a set of wheels back with new tires mounted and ------balanced for non-rotor, non-sprocket performance.

Can work the other way too. Many years ago I was an electrical contractor. I would get these pacic calls occassionally about circuits going out. I felt guilty charging someone $75 to drive to their house and plug in their TV. So I started a new policy of asking them to check first.
I have the ability to touch something electrical and make it work. Often when someone complained about a light not working I would examine it and it would start working. Then I'd have to tell the customer I couldn't fix it cause there was nothing wrong with it.
Then there was the one when I was doing Electrical
Engineering for PG&E. My friend, in billing, told me about this old lady who called every month to complain aqbout her electric bill. Then one month she called and said'"I'm so sorry about my complaining, It's all my fault! I went in my closet and saw there was no light bulb and I had left the switch on. All that electricity has been leaking out all this time!"

I'm with Rook, I had my ZX14 like 6 days and dropped it in the driveway. I was never so embarassed in my life, except for the previous bike I dropped in a driveway.

When I low-sided (or maybe high-sided, but no matter) my ZX11 I was not nearly as embarassed as dropping a bike in my own driveway.

Or like my friend who put a piston in a Monster backwards. Made quite a racket. He sneakily unbolted the jug and turned the piston around, viola! All is quiet.

I can't even count the times I dropped a bike because I forgot to put the frigging sidestand down.

How about refilling your engine....you've cleaned yer beautiful bike so nicely...then....'Time to get that oil circulated'...Fire er up.Friggin oil flyin all over the side of your nice clean beautiful bike...no oil filler cap.

She's up on the front stand...solid as a rock. You're sitting with the front tire between your knees...loosening the axle nut."Shit man...she's a tight".....OOPS...before you can say....'one'...she's laying on er side, you luckily pulled your left leg out fast enough. No way could I even HOPE to catch her.Happened so fast....

Lifting the rear for maintenance with that Pitbull forward facing stand.Easy...done it a hundred times...no prob. You get the spools lined up,lift,good....lean over the seat to get that right side spool in there...looks good...okay...LIFT.Friggin thing misses the spool...OVER SHE GOES....I can't stop a 500+ lb bike when it wants to do the floppy fish!

I've done the 'no-kickstand' deal....twice...first time...I caught er before she hit...second time...nope....caught her...but she hit anyway.Lowering her from the rear stand.

I'm out cruisin...having a blast.I stop on this old deserted road off the highway...up a bit...a small incline...then it "flattens out'...I ride up to the spot where I can turn around.I do.Okay...nice...now I park."Sheesh...that little teensy speck of dirt there on my pipe....gotta get that off a there...can't have my beautiful bike having dirt spots on the muffler" ...bend down, apply a smidgen of wiping to it...."SHIT"...bike's startin to roll forward..."WTF"...too late...she hits the asphalt before I can say...'DUMBAZZ...they told ya NOT to park on an uneven surface"....scraped my nice shiny muffler on that one.Hell...it LOOKED flat from where I was sittin!Good time for first gear.Which I now do religiously IF I have ANY inklings.

With my new baby...I'm being VERY careful about things like this now.I had a hard enough time tryin to pick up my 07....no way do I want to try and muscle this badgirl back up!

Here's a helpful hint for everyone(including me)...IF(when)yer lifting yer baby back up from a right side fallover...make sure yer kickstand's down FIRST! Yes...I did this one time as well.Double whammy!Friggin learnin can be a real pain!Costly to boot!

You guys know how having a sweet badazz Harley means ya gotta do it just right...with suave....and style...right?Yep...that'd be me...mr. suave.Pull into the College parking lot....lookin VERY COOL.Bandana...the whole deal.Pull up to park...I'm the only bike there...students walkin to class...bunches of em.Anyway...I pulls up there.Lookin good...kick that kickstand down....you know with a nice manly move.Yup.I'm cool.Lean er in.BOOM....she's on her side...I'm splayed out there...lookin....well...you get the picture.Friggin kickstand went all the way to the stop and bounced back up!Geez. That bitch was a bastard to try amd lift..but I got er...after some trial and error...like...droppin her back down again to get a 'better' grip...FUCK...never again.

My 1st dealings with a side stand was when I was 17 (39 years ago) with my 1st bike (1974 500 triple) when I got off the bike the side stand rested on a rock with the bike pointed down hill. I got 4 steps away when I heard it go boom and the crowd applauded. Front left blinker and my pride took the hit and then a wise old man on a HD said park em in gear and they won't roll. That may have been some of the best simple advice that anybody ever gave me.

That same 500 at the track was pulling real low 13's and close to breaking into the 12's so I got this idea of leaning out the oil injection a little at a time for a faster time. I got it down to a low 13.0? when a friend told me the last run it did not smoke but I was so close to the 12's that a little leaner just might do it.

Went home on a trailer so 3 new 1st size over pistons and a bore job and we were back on the road.

Back in 1995 I had live in South Carolina and the only vehicle I had was my 83 Shadow 750. I only been riding for 5 months or so and the bike was my only form a transportation until one October morning going to work in 40 degrees in a jean jacket. After work, straight to the car dealer I went and bought my first car. A brand new Chevy s-10. I was all proud. But I couldn't drive the truck home and ride the bike. So I went and got some straps and was ready to use the brand new truck bed for the purpose it was made. To haul stuff!!! I got my bike into the bed and put the straps on nice and tight, shook the salesman hand and off I went. I made a turn in the parking lot and BOOM!!!! I look over my shoulder and there is the bike laying on it's side. Dented the truck bed, the side rail, and and nice big dent in the beautiful blue tank of my Shadow. I didn't know you had to compress the front shocks down and then tighten the straps!!!! Live and learn....That truck was cursed from that day forth. The bike jumped when someone was working on it and dented the other side as well....It was sure a pretty bike before the dents.

Here's my (latest) numbskull fuckup. I bought the factory-optional centerstand because it's as handy as the pockets on a shirt, and to me, trackstands are for the track. I like to be able to remove the wheels and lube the chain with a minimum of hassle. So the bike came with rear stand spools, and rather than just removing them, I replaced them with some naff psuedo-cf spools to match the frame sliders and bar ends. Then, when I got the Givi bags, the Scorpion slip-ons would not clear, so I made some flat brackets to lower the pipes by 1 1/8" I had also used the old spools (cut down) to extend the new ones to make a sort of swingarm slider for a little extra protection in the event of a tipover.

So last weekend, after backing off the rear preload to a more comfortable setting, I hit a huge pothole on a back road and bottomed the shock. When I got close to home, after a 275-mile day, some of which was on dusty rock road, I decided to take it to the carwash and spray it off before heading for the hizzle. As I was blowing off the dust, I noticed the left muffler hanger (plastic) was broken, so I called the wife, who was also in town, to drive by the carwash so I could get a piece of twine out of the truck to hang up the muffler until I could get home and repair the hanger bracket. As I continued spraying off the dirt, I looked under the bike and it became very clear what had happened; The ersatz spool/swingarm slider had hit the bottom of the muffler, putting a huge dent in it and broke the bracket. The combination of extended spool, softened suspension and lowered pipe came together and now I will have to remove and disassemble the muffler to attempt to get the dent beat out. No time for that now as I am headed to Eureka Springs in the morning, but I should have known better than to hang something on the bike that it really didn't need. I reinforced and repaired the hanger bracket with a strip of aluminum and some black epoxy. Then I unbolted the spools and tossed them in a box.

Late for work, riding the old KZ900 on a residential 25mph at about 30. Van in front of me put on his right turn signal, and started to turn. As I got close he stopped about halfway through the turn. There was room, so instead of stopping, I went around. Unfortunately there was a car coming the other way, and when I cut back into my lane I was a little too close to the van. Front brake lever punched a hole in the van's left tail light, sending me and the bike flying through the air. Had to ride home with the right handlebar bent back and skyward, the left forward and down, and the wheel aimed to the left. Showed up late for work with a banged up elbow, 2 scraped up shins, and some road burn. Straightened the forks, frame, and replaced the handlebar, brake lever, turn signal, front fender, and 2 weeks after, rode it on a 3 week vacation halfway across the country. I always stop now.

Not a bike story, but still stupid. I have a surround receiver hooked up to my computer. I was having some issues with the software and receiver setup staying configured. One day I started playing a game, and there was no sound. Put in a cd, and still no sound. Restarted computer, checked the software settings, checked the wiring, made sure I wasn't muted, volume was up, everything I could think of, still no sound. Uninstalled the software, re-installed, went through all the settings, and after 3 hours, still no sound. I was just about to start punching walls when I noticed my headphones were plugged in. Pulled out the plug, and eureka!

Before your criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you do criticize them, you're a mile away and have their shoes.

Out the door on my way to work, I ran franticly through the house one day searching for my keys. I counldn't find them in any of coat pockets or any of the places I might leave them. After about 10 minutes I was ready to give them up for lost when I noticed they were in my hand.

When trying to stay with sportbikes on your naked do not powershift coming out of a corner. For some reason when doing a 10 grand 2/3 powershift while leaning will aim you in a direction that was not planned.

I had a 03 Z1000 that vibrated very badly. Most uncomfortable bike I ever ridden.I saw a bike broke down so I'm going to fix it for him LOL.Went to put the stand down and I couldn't find it.Young kid with his first bike says hey man wheres your stand.Damn it fell off it vibrated so bad.Told the kid to sit on my bike while I looked at his Ninja 500.It flooded I think.Got it running.Felt like a big asshole.Cost me $100 for a new stand.Good grief.Traded it on a black and blue 01 ZRX.
