Texas "Sport Bike Law"
05/20/11 10:00 AM

First, if this is the wrong forum for this topic, BG please feel free to move it. This is for ALL of us, but it is especially important for our Texas brothers and sisters. It seems that a bill was introduced aimed at a segment of the motorcycle population; sportbike riders. H.B. 2470 Malorie's Law. I advise everyone to check it out. It started when a 19 year old woman was killed when her boyfriend lost control of his bike and crashed. He survived, his passenger, Melanie did not. The girls's family has gotten together with this group called "First Ladies of the Round Table" to introduce this rediculous bit of legislation. If I am reading thier site correctly, they actually want passenger to either carry a motorcycle endorsement or create a PASSENGER endorsement! And get this, IT'S ONLY FOR "SPORTBIKES"!! I am a member of sportbikes.net. This particular post is only open to members but it's free to join. (I'm not pimping for another site) but please go there and have a look. I am all for better rider training and better awareness for all road users, but this is just an attempt to take away our rights "in the name of saftey". These people are well organised and getting thier message out. Relying on the tragic death of this girl and the grief of her family to carry this bill into law. All you Texans PLEASE get the word out. Stop this bill in its tracks. If one state adopts this bill as law, then how long will it be before more states say "Hey, Texas has done it, it'll be easier for us to pass a law like this and maybe restrict the rights of these hooligans even more".
I'm on facebook and they have a page dedicated to passing this bill into law. I've read some of the discussions and posts. I've seen a lot of references about posts by anybody not on board with thier views. Couldn't find the posts; THEY DELETED THEM! I don't go on to Myspace, but I'm sure they have something like that on there too.
There is also a Facebook page to try and get the bill killed; Say No to TX HB 2470 "Malorie's Law". PLease, spread the word to EVERYBODY who rides a motorcycle where ever they might live. Texas. The spotlight's on you now. Give'em hell!

Oh I can just imagine all the little spatting going back and forth. That's an effect of this internet. People who have nothing to gain or lose by what's happening in Texas will get their chance to make things worse by opening their big yap which is their right to do and I stand by it. I imagine people felt similar in the 60s with all the changes going on. Just different fight today some are the same, just in different guise though. Usually, some pussywillow's attempt to stop someone else from being free because it looks dangerous or they might have to think about it for a second on their way to work everyday and the mental picture of some poor innocent girl who willingly hopped on the back of a bike knowing the risk involved being thrown through the air and splatting on the pavement like some lesser animal crossing the road. Maybe, we'll get really lucky and it'll be motorcycle seatbelt time!!! YEAHHHH! Oh geez there I go being 'racist' again. Sorry Big'sloppy'sav.

OK... I'm from Texas and I'm going to play the devils advocate here for just a minute. Maybe a passenger endorsement to the existing motorcycle rating might not be such a bad thing. I've seen or heard of a lot of pretty young girls being thrown off the back of a sportsbike when their dumb-as-a-box of rocks boy friend tries to wheelie or try some other lameazz stunt and gets her or both of them killed. Lets face it, a sportbike is designed to handle with a solo rider on board and when you place 120 lbs or more high on the rear pillion it is a different animal and by different I don't mean in a good sense. At the least, the applicant would have to sit through a couple of hours of video carnage that shows what can happen when a passenger falls off the back..it ain't pretty. Also would be good to have them demonstrate the ability to handle the machinne with a passenger on board and show they comprehend the risks involved. I won't take my daughters on the back of my bike and cringe at the thought of them getting on the back of their boyfreinds machine. If you have kids you know where I'm coming from. Don't get me wrong, I like going as fast as anyone and think everyone should hvae the right to risk life and limb on a bike if that's their thing but a lot of these passengers don't know what they're getting in to until it's too late. Just my .02

Im from Texas as well but I see this law as silly. What will happen is that we will have to pay for another fricking $350 class for our ladies to be able to ride with us. If you are stupid enough to get on the back of a bike with some retarded douche bag, oh well! You will eventually kill yourself off by falling on a pair of scissors anyway. Another stupid law and waste of time!

I see this as a case of discrimination im fine with the law as long as it applies to all motorcyclists in Florida 1 in 10 bickers wares a helmet and I think that’s a dumb law but I don’t see how it is safer to ride on the back of an oil leaking HD that by the way you will see parked outside any bar and why is it that texting while driving is still legal when 5,000 + people die a year from it the cell phone is mans demise.

I am against anymore regulation to save us from ourselves. Surprised the dipshits here in CA have not come up with this idea first.

I know there are alot of preventable mishaps, but what good is the law going to do? From what I remember in TX you can ride without a helmet if you have a "waiver". In my experience they do not check for this until after you have been stopped, involved in a mishap etc. What is the waiver, a bond to offset medical costs. Might be a class related with it also, been awhile. Anyway, my point is that its just a piece of paper, will make no difference whatsoever in preventing anything.

In CA its illegal to text while driving, care to guess how many mishaps are still happening related to texting? Of course, you will be screwed when they check your phone after the fact.

My 2 cents

texting and driving was made illegal in Michigan but it's not enforcable. It'd be like saying people can't drive and wear their underwear outside their pants.

I just dont' see what will a license do for someone who is not in control of anything? I mean a license gives you ability to do something because the licensor says you're skilled and educated enough to do it. So what is a passenger skilled in doing exactly. There is actually a technique that is helpful for passengers to know to make the ride safer and easier for the operator but this tends to be somewhat a matter of personal opinion on the operator's behalf and should be expressed by each different operator( and varies in importance with each bike). People can't even finger out 4-way stops here anymore because all the training is now done by private contractors not the actual state - so everyone is getting bs for training. The passenger endorsement would end up just being another source of revenue for states to suck from our pockets with little to no benefit to society. Not to mention last time I checked people not old enough to have a drivers license are able to be passengers, how will they get an endorsement on their 'license'. If someone needs a ride because they broke down on the side of the road and are hurt, can't help em on your bike because they don't know how to sit on a seat, wear a helmet, and hold on to something... well enough?

I don't see how the law would help. If he lost control and crashed, it wouldn't matter if she had a phd in motorcycle passenger. She still would've died if she got on the bike. You can say she shouldn't ride with dumbasses, but anyone can lose control. Oil on the road, flat tire, broken chain.....an accident is an accident.

This may be a dumb question but how come they can dream up a regulation for almost everything these days except making sure presidential candidates are actual U.S. citizens?

retsam, I don't care if you take issue with Kruz's statements, but making it personal ("retarded") is really uncalled for.

The thing that maddens me about this is perspective can be a son of a bitch! You can only do what you want and be 'free' as long as the majority of voters agree with you. That is not freedom for all to me. But then driving is not a right it's a privilege so I guess I'm wrong.?

bullshit thats what the law tells you so you can be regulated .. its a right... we pay for everything and is told what we can do with our own property ..

if the law was paying to build roads and bridges then i can see it as a privilege to drive on private property

I agree with kruz's points on this. Especially the dumb ass wheeling his gf off the back. I saw it happen in front of me! I like the idea of showing capability with a passenger. However, ALL bikes are very different with a passenger and therefore ALL with motorcycle endorsments should comply. It should not be a seperate endorsment though, it should be part of the original endorsment.
