Washing the bike today
08/25/15 8:26 PM

Finished washing her, was drying the bodywork off with it started warming up. A car pulls up in front of my driveway and parks in front of it facing the wrong direction in the street. A guy gets out of the passenger side and starts walking up my driveway. I figure it's someone looking for directions so I shut my bike off. He approaches me and ask "WERE YOU JUST ON SUCH AND SUCH STREET DOING ABOUT 40 -50 MPH IN 2ND GEAR?" No introduction, no nothing. Just ask me that question sternly. So I respond to him, "so what if it was?" He starts in on more bs like "just answer the question" at which point I continued to be like who are you to be asking me such questions? As he kept on I told him "get the fuck off my property." So he keeps jabbering and I just keep replying "get the fuck off my property". We both sort of move towards the back of my bike and I just keep insisting that he get the fuck off my property. After a few times of telling him to get the fuck off my property, he walks down and is talking to his wife (I assume) through the driver side window. A neighbor walking her kids started talking to them. Apparently their discussion involved her telling them that it wasn't me and I had been washing my bike or whatever.

So a couple minutes later the guy walks back up and begins apologizing. I begrudgingly accepted after he repeated himself a few times, explaining that he has kids. I just let it go at that point, but wanted to say to him "yeah the only thing worse than an asshole riding too fast in a neighborhood with kids around is an even bigger asshole not respecting someone's property rights and falsely accusing people of shit they didn't do." But I held back, dude was very lucky was about to get a tire iron upside his head.

Your way better than me because it would have been a bad scene in my driveway if that happened in my driveway. You my good man have amazing control and temperament.

I was delivering in the country for UPS. Stopped at a farm, and a car pulled up. I figured he was looking for a package. He starts yelling at me about speeding past his house at 75 mph a mile back because he has kids. I told him, first, a UPS truck won't do that much over the speed limit. Second, your house is about 1/4 mile back from the road. Third, teach your kids not to play on a 55 mph country road! He started yammering about how he was going to get the speed limit lowered to 30mph. Then he could have me arrested. I just laughed and called him a moron. He must do that all day long because the road is 10 miles straight with no stops, and he's at about mile 6.
Vic, that guy would've gotten the hose on my driveway, and then I'd ride by his house every chance I had.

Before your criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you do criticize them, you're a mile away and have their shoes.

Or you could have just said "no it wasn't me", instead of letting the situation escalate? I realize he was in the wrong here, but I've learned in life to pick your battles.

If he wouldn't have accepted my reply, then I would have taken the action that you did.

So lets say you've been working on your bike. You keep in it first at 35 but just with your pipes it sounds like you're riding really fast because the engines at mid-rpms. Some dad comes out in the middle of the road and basically forces you to stop by impeding your path. You're saying that's ok? You'd just be like "oh no sir, I wasn't speeding, I just had it in 1st because Ive been working on my bike". Bullshit, you'd be like "FUCK OFF!"

What if it was me speeding up and down the neighborhood road? The guy had no right to ask me any questions even if hit 100 mph. Furthermore he had no right, and was not invited to walk up to me on my property and start asking questions. He has no right to do anything, despite having kids or whatever his concerns were. And besides the dude was amped up (implied by the caps in his opening question), no doubt if I would've said "yes it was me" he would've started going off.

The solution is elegant in its simplicity: don't wash your bike.

I never said the guy was right. In fact,he was very wrong, but from a tactical point of view, the first and easiest thing to do to diffuse a situation is to use your words in a calm manner. If that doesn't work, then turn it up.

As far as the 35 mph first gear scenario, trust me I have been in that exact situation more time than I can count. I've been in the hot rod game for 20 years. The first time it happened I was 18 driving my 5.0 mustang and this old man was screaming at me from his front lawn (I wasn't speeding). I responded with a WOT smoke show of epic proportions.

Sometimes it helps to try to put yourself in the other's shoes...even if it's not exactly being presented as one would like.

I can see that guy's concerns...they're totally valid.His approach?Possibly a bit hasty...but no harm done.

"But I held back, dude was very lucky was about to get a tire iron upside his head"...LOL...and upon seeing that, dude pulls his 9mm and no more bikey-washy.Poor Ninja...an orphan at...how many miles?

"Or you could have just said "no it wasn't me", instead of letting the situation escalate?"...now THERE'S some wisdom right there. Sounds like Nastynotch has seen some action;)Kudos brother.
