Track Bike
08/20/13 3:43 AM

Well I hit the New York Safety track this past Sunday and Monday with Tony's track days. They are a great bunch of guys and girls for sure....My baby did great and was up front all day.....BUT even with all my mods to lighten her up you can still feel her bigness lol.I would love to try a 1000cc bike. I'd love to buy a second bike so that brings me to my question? What bike would you go for it you budget was say 12,000 or less? I love the look of the R1 or the ZX10. What do you guys think?

look for a 2010 ZX-10 used. you'll get a modded one a lot les than $12K. I'd still keep that for a street bike unless I was riding in the Expert class.

check WERA

A used, modded 600 track bike will serve you a lot better than the latest and greatest trackbike new out of the crate.

...well, you could ride a new ZX-10 on the track. Kruz said his was very much like his zx-6 is in handling. ...only thing is a crash is not unlikely at the track which would suck on a new bike. I think a 600 would be a lot more exciting for me on a road course. The 14 will do it and it does clean house on the straightaway but I had to go in over my head to be competitive with literbikes and 600s in the corners. almost crashed once. that was the wakeup call.

you know, there isn't anything that is much sicker than a gen4 ZX-10 with the that Austin Racing exhaust.

I think you should get it. You will prolly find a new 2011 for about 11K. It can do track and street duty for ya.

If you want to put less of a dent in your bank account go with a used modded 600 for track only.

Took my 14 to the track for giggles a few years ago. Did two sessions then put it back in the trailer and got back on my ZX6R which is 10X more fun and much faster around a circuit. If you want to improve don't buy a pretty bike - get something that's already a little rashed so you aren't afraid to throw it down the track.

Ask Kruz.

That's good logic for a track only bike. How about a GSXR 750 if you want a little more power + lightweight?

but I still want the gen4 zx-10

The 10 is sick for sure!!! I was on e bay anbd found a R1 and a CBR that were 2008's that looked real nice and I can buy either for $6400.00. BUT lol I did see a F4 MV for sale with 1800 miles and its right down the street from me.....Love that sexy ass bike! But I know that's not the best way to go. I do love the BMW but I really only want to spend about 6 to 10k.....so its between the CBR or the ZX10. I don't like the way the R1 sounds and I am a power freak for sure so I think the 10 would be best.

Listen to that throttle blip. In motogp, there are honda engines in crates still waiting to be used up. In the other pits, those engines may not make the rest of the season, as they are quickly being used up as in very few engines left, wear out as you don't or you do see the quality?

Track body work, clip-ons, rearsets, etc all cost the same no matter the make they are going on... you only live once... get the MV.

Or, if ya wanna be practical... get a 600.
Litres chew thru tires @ approx $500 a set... a middleweight will need them half as often and your lap times and fun level will be the same.

What hasn't happened to my Honda @ this point? lol

That MV is a Buddies... He raced a Gixxer last season, while that beautiful F4 just sat in the garage. (He street rides a Brutale)

When he showed up this year with the F4 race ready, I first jizzed a little then questioned his sanity.
He explained to me that all the parts that we typically replace after crashes are after market and cost the same as they did for his Gix... and that what was insane was not using that MV for it's intended purpose.

It's ok to crash a $30,000 bike because it doesn't cost any more to fix up than a crashed Gixer. In fact, the gixxer cost about half of its MSRP to mod but the Agusta only costs 25% of its showroom pricetag to replace fairings, footpegs levers and maybe a couple other little goodies. Heck, you don't even need to replace the exhaust on the MV! Factory is perfect. Costs a lot of money to insure a bike like that for the street. No worries on that if you run it on the track. No insurance company will touch it for less than half the cost of the bike. Just buy a second one for backup rather than pay all that doe to the insurance co.

Funny how when you really want the bike, all it takes is about 20 minutes of thinking and pure logic prevails. You buy it.

Personally, I'd still go with the ZX-10 because I think it's also a great looking bike and I doubt it is any slower than the MV.

$12k and just 6000 miles. I was ready to let the 14 go at half that price when I had 6000 miles. Sounds like a good price. Very good...very realistic. Motivated to sell but not so cheap that there must be something bad abput it. Right in your back yard Dogo.

MV Agusta F4 - 2010 - $12000

looks vaguely familiar, I think. At least I know the tail pipes do.

Why are his knee sliders so clean?

I don't need another litre, Rook... In fact, I'm going the other direction. I spend $768 for two rear and one front tires. That lasts me two races, or one round as a Novice. If I filed for contingency (I never have), Pirelli would only reimburse me $75 for a win on Sunday. I'll be novice for two more rounds. Once expert, I can enter more races (likely run 3-4 per day), but that tire $$$bill$$$!!!... kinda like owning my own home.

Why are his knee sliders so clean?

He's a retired guy living on a fixed income + what he can make as a track teacher. It might be the cost of the bike he is riding makes him a little apprehensive. I suspect he may have worn a set or two out about twenty years ago but not any more. ...but if he tells me one more time he is concerned that I might crash, I may point out his untouched knee pucks. That might get me an early ticket home!

same here. I think i mentioned this in my earlier post on this thread but the more able the 14 gets through modding, the farther I get from using it to its utmost. It gets stronger and lighter but that doesn't always work to my advantage. It makes an overpowered bike that I'm even more likely to loose control of on a road course. I'd love to own a 600 some day.

Breaking balls is par for the course... pretty sure the old guys skin will be thick enough to handle some ribbing about his pucks.
