Race Tec Rebuild ???
12/22/10 6:42 PM

Guy’s I’m thinking of sending out my forks and rear shock to Race Tec to rebuild them and revalve them. But My questions is how in the hell do I take them off and keep the bike steady while I’m waiting for them to come back from getting rebuilt? Also has anyone done this and if so how do you like it? Race Tec wants to know how much the bike weights but I have no freaking idea on that….Is there anyway to weight the bike at home? Maybe two bathroom scales? One in the front and one in the rear? What do you guys think?

Dry weight ~ 474lbs.

Tell them also, curb weight front/rear ~ 276lbs/280lbs respectively.

Either take the pipes off and rest the oil pan on a wooden box, or cut out the wooden box and slide it under the bike somehow to clear the pipes for what is left at the oil pan.

Buy a couple of tie-downs and strap the ceiling rafters in the garage with a few. Also buy bar straps so you can hook through the loop end of the bar strap for the bars then you hook the tie-down thru the other end of the bar strap. This makes it a snap for service work like you are doing.

I have bungie cords over the rafters so I can hang the upper crown by the whole assembly while I service the steering bearings. Those 2x4's above are handy. If you are going to do your own maintenance, then maybe the rafter trick with enough 2x4's to take on the mass weight of the bike. You can remove the rear shock and let the tire hold the back up. Something like that.

If you want to lift the front to remove forks, I imagine the typical way to do would be a steering pivot stand. Otherwise the strap method Hub Mentioned will work. Take the tank off and put the strap under the air box. Catch 22 is you will need a front and rear stand to lift the bike in first place.

What's Race Tec charging ya for the rebuild, Somefun?
Hard Racing gave me a sweet deal on Ohlins... just sayin'...

DogoZX you have to let me know how it works out!!! I think that will be next years nod for sure. They look freaking sweet! And that way I have no issues with holding the bike up while I send the old stuff out.

Will do. Race Tech did the suspension on my old 9r and it was fantastic... but always hear guys talkin' about Ohlins being better and wonder, hmmm... how much better can it be? Well, I'm about to find out. Can't compare apples to apples, however. My last ('06) zx14 never got the suspension done before she blew. Stock suspension on the big ninja is way to soft for a big guy. Gonna be night and day, I'm sure.

Dogo,
Like Hub mentioned, the straps from the rafters works great! I have hung a lot of bikes this way (rear stand and front, strap hung, simutaniously lifting with bottle jack for safety. Currently, I use front and rear stands but, always use straps as safety back-up if bike is not completed that day. ( With my luck, one of my grandson's would come over for a visit and knock the damn bike over)

Just get the grandkids to hold the bike for ya, CB.

J/K... Thanks, yeah I've had 'em hangin' from the rafters before.

^^^JMHO< I have steered clear of jacking the bike under the oil pan. Never hear it to be a problem if you place a plank between the jack lifting plate/post and the oil pan. Always worried it would dent under the weight so I prefer the pivot stand in the steering pivot or if you totllay need the steering to float, a strap under the airbox w/plastics and tank removed.....conect the strap between 2 rafters bike hangs in the center. Go close to the wall wher it is least stress on the rafters.

Rook,
I have specially cut pieces of wood I've made for all my bikes to jack off of. I'm a master at jacking off.

If we ever meet up for a ride, keep your gloves on when we shake hands.

No need to be a master. You got the wood, the rest is pretty easy.

That'd be cool. I have a good buddy that lives in Hood River. I'll be down that way a few times for sure. I'm gonna hit the rally in Stevenson for atleast one day. Gotta ride Maryhill Loops atleast once before I die.

Sorry for the threadjack, Somefun.

Merry Christmas, everyone.

+1 about the rafters. I figured this one out being in a pinch without a front stand and just a rear. Place bike on rear stand, place a small floor jack with a piece of wood on top under the oil pan and as you jack tighten the straps to the rafters. You may want to have some help just as a precaution first time around. It will work or you can get one of these below. Redline has a couple of videos.

Heh it does look sort of like a speeder.... I can date myself... I saw the speeders the first time anyone saw them, in the theater. Like what, 25 years ago? WoW

The process in the pictures would have been easier with a front pin stand, then you only would have slid the fork tubes out and left the triple tree installed. Those bearings in the stem only rarely need service, but he could do them now for sure, lol.

Yeah me too! That's too funny! I love having her all apart with no time line to have her back together. That way I can look at every little inch and make sure this is the bike I would want to go 200 MPH on and feel safe she's ready for it. Not just some guy that says yeah I checked it out (when he really didn't cuz his lunch hour was any minute)and before you know it there is a huge issue....Or even worse don't know it....LOL

More like 35 years ago if you're talking movie #1---ainna?

from wiki
-------------------------------------
The first film in the franchise was originally released on May 25, 1977
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

I think the third film had those dumb looking dog androidas that rode around on floating sportbikes w/o wheels. Sorry Star Wars aficianados----if you are old enough to have seen the first one when you were a youngster, that one was a bit of a disappointment. Good thing GL gave up on finishing the series. He waited too long and it got stale. IMHO.

Somefun,

Nice! It's the best thing you can do to the bike money well spent. I don't what size you are but with the suspension upgrades it will feel like a 1000 now. I know when I did mine that's how I felt. Now the playing field is starting to level off.

Again good for you an best of luck!!
