transporting motorcycle
06/07/10 1:58 PM

Hi guys I could use a little advice here, I have to transport my zx 14 a few states away from home, I have a trailer but it's a lilly iffy and could use some work, I really don't want to spend the money to fix it up a bit.. I have a 4x4 truck and could get the bike in the back with my ramps and by driving in the ditch by my house, but not to sure it it's possible to do that at my destination. Have you guys ever put a big street bike in pickup? I use to put my xr 650 in the back and it was a little tough with 1 person and thats was only about 300 lbs.. I thought about a small electric whinch and pull it up? stupid? or possible. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Get an 8x2". Find a piece of boiler plate or aluminum plate, drill 3 holes in a triangle for the plate or the lip on the end to sit on the tailgate. Make another 2x4" front stop shim, so it hits the front wheel first, not the front fender.

Get two tie-downs, hook them in the bed's anchor hoops if available. Use extended bar straps to clear the plastic with the hooks or the hard part of finding a place to hook the end is eliminated by the loop of the extended straps.

Keep the tailgate down and strap the 8x2 ramp with a hole in the plate. Take a long bicycle U shaped lock, hook the lock thru the truck's hoop that you hooked the tie-down with, then lace the U in the hole of the metal plate. No one can steal it. No ramp goes flying out the back of the truck.

get one of those S shaped ramps. Ask Willid, i think he uses one. Make sure you strap the bike in good. Hate to see it fall .

Ride it. fly back. It will cost the same make a nice weekend. transporting a big sportbike is a good way to cause damage far in excess of the ticket back. Across town is one thing but on a several hundred mile trip it can shift and fall too easily.

I woke up this morning and I got myself a beer. The future is uncertain and the end is always near.

Yes, I was thinking short trips. If we do not want to constantly stop, check that the bar did not move and loosen to one side of the tie-down, then yes, you will be sweating bullets every few hundred miles...

http://www.baxleycompanies.com/Sportchock.html This is where you set this chuck in the truck, roll up, lock and load. The trip awaits... "Never look back."

If you can bolt something down spend a few bucks on a pit bull trailer restraint. Baxley chocks will work but you are still are dependant on straps to hold the bike in place while in a trailer or truck. With the restraint you simply roll the bike onto a trailer and it locks in place. No pressure on the suspension,no broken throttle tubes from straps on the clipons, no checking straps. The pit bull restraint is about $270 and a quality wheel chock is around 250..I found this picture of a zx14 using the trailer restraint system. Don't worry even if you have to use straps just go over the lower tree in the front and use the foot pegs for the rear.

My bike has been back and forth across the country in the back of uhaul trailers and moving trucks. I run tie down straps around upper triple clamp, down through fairing, and anchored about about 6 inches or so from wheel/tire. For trips where I couldn't anchor tie downs where I wanted them, I used a 4x4 with eye hooks. Attached the 4x4 to 4x6 piece of thick plywood. Can send ya a pick of this contraption if ya want. There are not any scrathes, damage to my bike. I would guess I have moved it at least 6000 miles using the above now.
