I finally got to replace the Shoei RF-1000 I bought back in 2007.
My new GT-Air:
It came with a tinted pinlock insert. I thought that was odd, considering it has a built in tinted visor. I'd find a clear pinlock insert more useful (to prevent fogging).
I have used pinlocks in my dual sport helmet, and I'm not a fan. They're a huge pain to clean, because the inserts are VERY delicate and scratch easily. The only way to clean them that I've found is to use liquid dish soap and your fingers, and then blow them dry with an air compressor. Any kind of fabric will scratch them.
You can't take the insert out without removing the visor, and in the Shoei Hornet, that's a project. You can't just pop the visor out like you can in a street helmet. It is held in place with big plastic screws. The new Hornet has a quick release visor, and that's what my next helmet purchase is going to be. My Hornet is old and has even been crashed on the street once.
In a street helmet, a pinlock might be a little less inconvenient, but I probably won't use it.
