Wires under seat not attached?
02/11/26 5:16 PM

2025 Zx-14R. I was reinstalling my ECU after Ivan flashed it, and I found these two wires not attached to anything.

Are these wires supposed to be connected to something? Are they even stock? They seem to go back towards the tail of the bike, but I wasn't able to find the distal end.

Previous owner installed a tail tidy and an LED underbody lighting kit (which I immediately removed once I bought it). Tail light still works fine, and when I removed the LED lighting kit I didn't disconnect these.

Did you put the oem tail kit back on or
just leave everything off for track?

I see one end each, of two unconnected sets of wires, one looks
like it has what could be the oem connector
(I'll pop my seat off later this am), the other
appears to be 'owners' wiring.
Do you have a question about either, or just
showing them? Not that I know much about wiring though.

I was going to get a 'fender eliminator' for my bike,
but opted to just cut off about 3'' and call it a day,
lol, it would be nicer with the eliminators, but I
opted out of doing the operation.

I reread my post and realized I was ambiguous about what I removed. I removed the LED lighting kit that the previous owner installed, but I did not remove or modify the tail tidy/fender eliminator. So, those two wires in my pic are exactly how I found the bike.

I just can't figure out what they're for, since everything seems to work fine. I wish I could have traced them further, but those appear to go toward the back of the bike. I can't trace them further without removing a bunch of stuff, and it doesn't seem needed. I'm just wondering if they're OEM and something is disconnected.

It might be a good idea (if you haven't already) checked
to see if any of the wires are hot.
In my case, I had two sets of wires/cables terminating
under my seat, one set from the battery and to the dash, and
one set from battery to under seat and dash.
One set was for my radar detector, the other set
was for my HUD-GPS Speedo, which needs a 5v battery pack
and I keep the battery pack under the seat, well secured,
and carry a spare battery pack in my backpack.
Anything off my 'System-battery' is fused in the battery
compartment which I think is important, that way
there can be virtually no 'fault' that could cause
calamity, anywhere on the bike, I use a 2 amp fuse.
----------
You may not have had your fairings off yet, so here's
a little bit of a heads up if you haven't.
The main fairings, the vented ones on both sides
are super easy to remove so are the top, covers
to the sides of the instrument cluster, and
the front tank area cover, all very easy, after
you've been through it once or twice the first time
there's a bit of a learning curve.
The main heads up for me anyway is that there are two
tiny bolts, one on each side (forward and in between
I 'think' the middle vent, it's like maybe 8mm, those
bolts HAVE TO BE TAKEN OUT, or you'll hurt yourself
like I did, trying to pull those back and off the bike
after removing the LARGE bolts, I think there are
two obvious ones, maybe a third without looking
at my bike.
The previous owner or tech, had broken the
fairing tab that the tiny bolt goes through,
so that fairing came off easily, not knowing about
those bolts, when I went to take the left side
fairing off, I almost herniated my entire being'
trying to pull the fairing toward the back to
remove it.
Once I finally realized there was that tiny bolt
there and removed it the left side fairing also
came off very easily.
Another heads up of lesser import, is that when
pulling off fairings, use your hand rearward hand
to cover the end that might fly off when pulling
them off to protect he paint on the tank, this
goes for the big fairings as well as the little
fairings on the sides of the cluster.
Those little fairings are so easy once you
see how the used little keeper tabs and figure
out how two squeeze and gently pull them off
after removing the 3 four mm bolts on each side.
The fit engineering is quite good imv.

By the way, I'm sure you already know, but there are
tons of videos for fairing removal, some good some
not so good, I watched them all, I still have not
removed the front 'cowl' fairing, that might be a little
more challenging.

In your second photo, I see connected black male and female lead connectors, one with a red wire and one with a red/black/yellow wire. I can only see the wires coming out from under the fuel tank bracket, the photo is cropped at the connectors so I can't see what's coming out of the back of the female but it should be the same color wires which rout under the tool kit, and ECU. If these are the wires you're talking about, they are the wires to your license plate light. I presume your confusion is because the wires are not anchored to anything? The wires from under the gas tank are supposed to pass through the slit in the block of foam.

I looked at my 2024 and also the service manual under wire, hose and cable routing. My wires are red and black with a yellow tracer. Maybe I'm seeing a reflection of the red on your black/yellow. The Gen1 had a much shorter wire coming just a few inches off of the main wiring harness on the LH side but the connectors were in the exact same location. They were not anchored to anything. I'd just put the wires coming from under the fuel tank bracket back in the slit.

What I see that possibly looks amiss is that the two circular holes in the foam block are empty. My 2024 has a set of bullet connectors, male and female in these holes. The female bullet connector is covered by a clear rubber shield and has a black wire. It fits in the larger circular hole. The male bullet connector has a black wire with yellow tracer and fits in the small circular hole. My guess is that this is an extra circuit for an accessory.

...or are the bullet connectors the wires you are talking about which are not connected to anything and we can't see in your photos? If so, they're not supposed to be connected to anything. I do not see these bullet connectors in my 2012 service manual and the schematics show no holes to secure the bullet connectors. It probably was a recent update. Don't quote me but I think I read something about an auxiliary circuit and it was located under the seat. I'd check the 2025 owners manual. Yes, the bullet connector wires seem to follow the same path as the tag light wires. I suspect they may be the same circuit...possibly. I used the tag light connector to power my aftermarket LED tag light and also my Autotune module, both of which had a very low draw. I'll look into this more soon. I'll be removing the toolbox and ECU soon to do a rear fender delete. A home made rear fender eliminator isn't too difficult and a lot cheaper and lighter. All the rear fender boltholes are in the right spot for a license plate and LED light bolt. I think Kaw planned it that way. You can just bend a couple pieces of metal for a license plate bracket.

I also have a Gen1 aftermarket tag light tutorial but unfortunately, the pics need to be reloaded. The light bolt goes in the rearmost bolthole for the rear fender. When I do this again, I'm using plastic bolts to plug the unneeded holes.
