I found a neat piece of gear for my Music on Craigslist, but i am wondering if there's a way to verify that the User that's selling it is Legit ?

You could get their phone number then google it to confirm

first thing to do is to verify that they even have the item. it is too easy to borrow someone else's pics and claim to be selling the same item. good way to do this, is to have them take a pic of it with a tag, or piece of paper with your username or e-mail written on it. THEN, you can talk to them on the phone, and maybe get a vibe off of their attitude by talking directly.

even then, its a gamble. If its a dollar amount you can afford to loose, then dont risk it. OR if the seller agrees, there are sites that handle a transaction as an escrow trade. IE, you send them the money, and the seller ships the item. When your happy the item is as described; they release the funds. I dont have any examples of sites that handles this, but I know they are out there.

Generally speaking, Craigslist is a sewer. That being said, I found my 14 on Craigslist, but it was very close to home. I wouldn't buy anything from a Craigslist listing without being able to see it and the seller up close and personal.

Hmm. So it doesn't have a overview of the Owner like Ebay on his previous sales...

Matsuke, Ask if the seller participates on a forum and he would mind you posting a therad there to ask for character/business references. I did this last winter at Bikeland when purchasing a used Bonneville Pro speedo adjuster. The seller had a high post count and I recognized his name from years back so that made me comfortable right away but the just for the last bit of reassurance I posted a topic asking for recommendations. Of course I asked the seller if he would approve first ...I think he thought I was just a little bit weird as did several of his friends who replied to the topic but in the end looked to me like a safe bet. Did a bank transfer by PayPal and the deal went just fine.

Tis a slippery slope to be sure Suke. Are there no slightly more reputable sites to get the tech you want?

Craigslist is clear they do not police sell or buy posts, and take no responsiblity.

eBay is the opposite, if you get scammed they will do as much as possible to make you whole again, including (since they own it) getting PayPal to go after the scammer's bank account.

They did this for me once, and cleaned out the scammer's bank and refunded me, and got the scammer arrest and convicted.

Anything you can pay for with PayPal automatically gives you some purchase protection. PayPal may try to get your money from a bank account that has been closed but they will try. And they will provide the cops with documentation to help with prosecution.

Funny, but Amazon has the best of all the purchase protection plans. The A-to-Z Guarentee covers not just Amazon-supplied items, but items sold by individuals and businesses too. So if you don't get what you paid for, they will refund your money and then go after the seller on their own. And you do NOT want Amazon going after you, thats the 2,000 pound gorilla in the room you don't want mad.
