Exhaust to collector question
11/10/14 6:25 PM

Hey folks.

Just upgraded my 2006 zx14 to Two Brothers exhaust...the installation manual said to use form-a-seal to snug fit the collector to the new pipe...I have tried several techniques, but this never holds. Eventually the pipe rattles around the collector. They said to put the sealant to the male part (new exhaust) but its really not working well...

any ideas, comments, suggestions, objections ?

Thanks
André

It shouldn't be rattling....does this connection take the gasket?I can't remember. My 07 had a gasket in there...used it even with the TiForce midpipe. What kind of gap are you talking about? If it's like a 1/16th inch gap around the midpipe ID to collector(OD) diameter...I think you need the factory gasket to snug everything up.It is inserted all the way in,right?

06/07 take a different pipe than 08 and newer. I believe 08 and up are bigger diameter. Are you sure you have a 06/07 set of slip ons?

"Are you sure you have a 06/07 set of slip ons?"..sounds to me like it's a setup for an 08 and up.As you asked...good call;)

Can you get a picture of the assembled pipes with the gap? That would tell a lot right there.

My 2bros for my '06 said the same thing about the form-a-seal, but the fit was so tight I almost couldn't get the pipe all the way on. I used the seal in case there was an irregularity or a minor gap I couldn't see. If there is rattling, something isn't right.

this is my second response...weird the first one did not make it to the forum

I think you guys nailed it. The box sais 08-10...I have a 2006. so yes there is about 1/8 inch all around. the right side is OK though. I guess I'll use more goo to snug fit. distance is fine, all works OK. I guess its for that reason that the bike stinks ;)

I tried high high tape but it gets burned up y the exhaust. Will get a picture of the whole think...

thanks for the quick responses !!!

"the right side is OK though"...this is getting better all the time;).

How in the heck does THIS happen?Left...no go...right...fine.

You say about an 1/8th inch gap...you might give that Connie gasket a shot...I think it'll fit in there...sounds like it anyway.I think the zx14 gasket is gonna be just a shade too thick.

Hi agiroux,

I have Yoshimura titanium/carbon R77 slip ons on my 07 that i installed when i first bought the bike because I really liked the look.

Problem is Yoshimura only make their R77 slip ons for 08-11 or 12 onwards ZX-14's.

As the guys say here, the ZX-14 06-07 OEM header pipes are slightly smaller in diameter than the 08-11's therefore the fit of my 07 headers to the 08 Yoshi designed pipes was not tight and instead very sloppy (probably about a 3mm gap all the way around).

But I really wanted them on my bike so I bought them anyway and was determine to get the problem resolved.

I took the challenge to my local muffler guy.

After a lot of discussion and tossing ideas around, we cut a section of metal pipe that was a very similar thickness to the size difference between the 07 OEM headers OD and the 08 Yoshi pipes ID to snug up the fit plus used a pipe that was slightly under the diameteter that was reqiried to slip over the 07 headers.
We then slit the pipe lengthways so it had give and slipped over the 07 header perfectly with a small gap that ran along the new sleeve lengthways.
This small lengthways gap was all that was required to be sealed with sealant when the 08 Yoshi pipes were slipped over for a tight fit. We still used sealant on the whole join area but it was only to seal rather than to provide anything structural such as what would have been required with the existing gap between the two pipes if no sleeve had been used.
This was obviously done for both left and right slip ons.
These sleeves worked a treat and I have never had a problem plus the fit was tight and strong with no leakage.

I hope I have explained this to make sense and it helps.

"(probably about a 3mm gap all the way around)"...yep...and it just happens that that connie gasket thickness is just at 3mm.It worked on my 07 slip-on exhaust setup. That was a TiForce slip-on...sounds the same fitment wise. The 07 factory zx14 gasket was JUST a shade too thick to slide the Slip-on on there.Had I cut two cuts into that TiForce end...I MAY have been able to at least get it to go on and in(over the zx14 gasket)...but I didn't really think it was gonna open wide enough AND look good after forcing it in there.
