RAILS (both sides) zx14 only
05/23/11 10:02 PM

Need to open a discussion on the differant side rails available (one on each side of the zx14) mounted to the front motor mount and to the rear upper or lower motor mount. I have been reading what MRE14 said along with SHARKEY among others. I know about POWER STUNT WORKS, B2 PRO RAILS, and MILITANT MOTO. I am sure their are other COMPANYS that offer for sale Protection if GOD forbide that i drop my ZX14 in the drive way. If you are out there please post because i am in the market to buy something. I AM NOT TALKING ABOUT IF I HAVE A PROBLEM AT 65 MILES AN HOUR ( a whole nother story ). My concern is with removing the rear motor mount top/or bottom motor mount bolt factory setup and then installing a threaded rod. Why not leave alone what the factory has done and put a rod thru the factory setup. IF you a Company built a side rail for the zx14 and used the lower rear motormount we the consumer/owner/rider could use a threaded rod size 7/16 to secure the rear of the bar without having to takeout the factory setup motormount. I have had a few conversations with sellers of side rails BUT am not getting straight forward answers to why they are not designing the rear boltup to the lower motormount without having to removing the factory motormount. I also question why in MRE14 and/or Sharkeys posts/conversations they have to alter/chopoff a product that they bought from a COMPANY that should be in my opinion a simple bolt/on product. I am in NO way QUESTIONING MRE14 or SHARKEYs comments. I also am NOT talking about sliders. I await any and all comments. THANKS

a product that they bought from a COMPANY that should be in my opinion a simple bolt/on product.

Have done a few mods in the last 4 seasons. Most of them were not exactly bolt on and go and that was not all due to my love of making things 10x more complex than necessary. A few mods were somewhat of a nightmare, even installed exactly as described by the instructions---but workable. Haven't trashed any mods (yet).

I think the problem lies in the fact that the companies that make these products have to accommodate the needs of all motorcycles/all years. That is a much greater design problem than Kawi has when they design a part for a Kawasaki motorcycle. The part might just fit any Kawi/any year.....or perhaps it will fit just one model but all years. Worst case, it will fit one model and the most current year. BUt then it will probably not need change for several more years, if ever.

So this stuff is cool but sometimes it requires a bit of ingenuity---which is why these forums are so great. I will steer clear of buying inexpensive bolt ons because that is the same as announcing, "this product probably is not going to fit because we did not spend the time and $ to test it."

Have me a pair of fake Pazzos that were so cheap it won't even pay to try to sell them. and they don't quite fit anyway so who would buy them? If I can get them to work, it will cost a lot more in time and tools than just buying the product everyone agrees is a great product.

There is the answer---buy mods that others recommend. Don't try to be a forerunner. Be a follower and save your $$$ LOL. It is true. let the other guys fall ahead of you to mark your path.

If the product has bad reviews, it is bad.

Scootn, that is why they should be made by the owner. lol I'm not doing it anytime soon, but one of these rainy nights I'm gonna get a bug up my ass and start fabbing up some of my own. I think most companies just want to get something out there ASAP when a new bike comes out and make the part as easily as possible so you end up with half thought out designs like the ones you're questioning. I'm not familiar with the conversations you're referencing, but you're never guaranteed fit when you're buying aftermarket parts unless it specifically says so. Unfortunately, it doesn't sound like you get what you pay for with rails.
