HAS ANYONE TRIED A MOTORCYLE CARRIER.
04/08/13 8:14 AM

Im considering purchasing a motorcylce carrier for my suv to haul my 14r on some trips we a going to take over the summer. unfortunatly a couple of the places we stay dont allow trailers. I have seen this online but have yet to see one in use in person. Any experience with these things would be appreciated.

Dude they will not allow, the Stinger motorcycle trailer. It folds up and stows away?

Are you talking about the ones that mount on your receiver and the bike sits on the back on a little platform.
If you are, then I wouldn't trust the weight of the 14 on one of those things, no matter what they say it can hold...

yes im seeing them rated for 900 lbs and 79 inch long rack which does meet our demensions i like you would wanna see it or know someone who has tried them. plus i already have a nice trailer I dont wanna invest another 2 grand in a fold up trailer. But yes im talking about the rack style carrier.

Post a link to the one you are looking at.
Must need a class V to hold 900lbs back there?

I would consider one of these for a dirtbike - just not sure about a 500 + motorcycle.

Also consider the width of the bike. The carrier may need a longer tongue which would make it even more unstable. Be very careful on this one.

Just out of curiousity are you installing it to the back of your RV? I've seen RV ones, there a hell of a bitch to load, takes at least two guys, but they work.

I have wondered about those hitches as well, but I think most that I have seen are a little light for the zx14. I would possibly give it a try with a 600cc bike, or smaller. Anything larger than that would need a supper duty hitch. I have seen some large hydrolic ones on motor homes, but they were huge. I saw a goldwing on one.

ErikR "This is a chart lifted from Discountramps.com........"

I'm not putting my baby on a 'discount ramp'. You need to find something like 'ExtremelyHeavyDutyAndSecureRamps.com' lol

By the chart you posted, the max load of the carrier is 450lbs, too small for the ZX14.

Candysurfblueman, where are you seeing them rated for a 900lb load??? Link? Not Harbor Freight I hope :)

I use one with my 300lb. dual-sport...the carrier is solid, and the bike never moves. I think mine is rated for 500 lbs. I can't imagine trying to load and haul the '14 on one though. :)

Now thats what im asking for. the carrier you have is a smaller version of what ive been looking at . It has tie downs at all four corner wheel lock and has extra bracing . and inresponse to the tongue weight i have worked at dealership for long time seen some crazy shit with overloaded hitches but have never seen a hitch split. I have seen a frame break where the hitch mounts . take that for what its worth. Im just wanting to find some who has tried it. if it cant be done so be it but surely someone has tried it .

Ok So i saw a zx14r just like mine on the back of a tahoe on the interstate . however I could not get a good look at the carrier. Dammit, but it appeared to be pretty stabill. and the tahoe wasnt squatted to bad. must research this further.

I thought about doing this myself. Decided it was a bad idea. Tongue weight will be VERY high, more than most vehicles will do. I think most 1 tons are rated for about 500lbs. Would be a pia to get bike on it. Bike's probably to wide to clear vehicle, and an extension for carrier amplifies tongue weight. I would contact the places you want to go, and ask about them allowing a small motorcycle trailer. Best solution in my opinion.

I actually picked up one of those 4x8 folding trailers from Harbor Freight for $269. I got the one with the 12" tires on it, and installed a piece of 4x8x3/4" ext. grade plywood that I cut in half. I coated it nicely with stain, and used some truck bed linning to do a 3' section down the middle. This was to keep the wood from being too slick in the event that it got wet. I used it 2 weeks ago to trailer my M109 (about 800 pounds) to Boone (185 miles one way), and it worked perfectly. You are able to fold it up once you get to your destination and place it behind you truck in a parking space. This is just another cheap version (very cheap), of a kendon trailer. I added a 1x6 side railing to my trailer, but that is not necessary. I used the harbor freight wheel chock that they have for $89 (cost me $39 with my coupon) and 2 eye bolts in the rear. Bike never moved and the trailer was rock solid. Here are some pictures that I took earlier in the year when I was test fitting the bike.

I like everything about that setup, except the ramp. Man, that's a narrow ramp. Dont miss on the pole shot... You also have nothing to stand on, should you have to stop on the ramp, for whatever reason.

Also, does your M109 get "stuck" when going over the ramp "lip" (the hinge point), at the top?

I would not do the "trailer on a tongue" idea for our cycle. The flexing and twisting moments of inertial would be pretty extreme at the mass we're talking about. "Normal" hookups have a ball joint to avoid generating these type of moments. You make a solid mount onto the hitch where the ball is normall mounted, and you're really asking for trouble when loading it. The hitch manufacturer's dont rate for flexing and twisting moments, they rate for steady state forces.

Now, if you could somehow brace both of the "arms" of the trailer with cross members, to the sides of the truck somehow, That would improve both flexing and twisting absorption. Place the ramp, mount the cycle, remove the ramp, and place the braces on each side. That would prolly work.

I have had no trouble with getting the M109 (or the zzr1200)stuck at the lip of the ramp. As far as driving it up on the ramp, I also have 2 additional 6'4 ramps that I place on either side of the one that I am driving on. I use those for placing my feed down when needed. I also usualy back my truck or trailer (depends on whichever I am using) into a ditch or something if the surface that I am loading onto is more than 18" above the ground. When I bought my first M109 from a guy in Ohio, we had no way to load it, but with a 8' ramp provided by the seller. he said just drive it into the rear of the truck (f150 longbed). I asked if he was crazy. He said he could do it. I held the money and said if he could do it without damageing the bike or truck, he could get the money. He zoomed down the alley and drove back up the 8" ramp into the truck (the rear rim on this bike is 8.5"). I was amazed and scared. Gave him the money and drove back to N.C.

You can't beat U-Haul motorcycle trailers for ease of use.

Is there some way you could creatively use them? For instance, instead of buying a trailer, rent one of those, and just maybe there is a U-Haul location near your destinations? That would be crafty, wouldn't it, 'park' the trailer at a U-Haul lot. Just a thought. Availability would be the only issue, but maybe you could get reservations and talk to the managers and make sure they really would have one. I've had a manager try to switch out a generic low trailer for a moto-specific one, no no no.

I only tailer my bike about once a year at the most, but for a total of about $350 invested, you cannot beat it. I a also able to use it to transport a riding lawnmower on occasion.

If its not a tag along trailer I would be very wery of it due to the twisting forces when turning or stopping. These bikes aren't pigs but they would be heavy on a hitch.
BlackLightning, what part of N.C. you in, I stayed about a mile away from the track in Concord. That is a good looking 109 sir.
