I need to do that too, my gas lock has become goofy. Prob from riding in the rain and weekly washings. Contact cleaner, huh, I've been thinking about what to use that won't hurt the paint. I will be giving that a try once I got the time to mess with it. Thanks for posting up this suggestion.

My locking gas cap is doing great because it's been laying in a box under my workbench since I replaced it with a screw-in type.
Anybody need one, complete with a key?

I avoid riding in the rain. Store the bike inside. The ignition is as good as new after 5 years but I gave up on the gas cap a couple years ago. I tried graphite and then even DeepCreep. The gas cap lock was full of that stuff and it just wouldn't turn anymore. So I got a lightTech quarter turn keyless cap. Saves a few ounces and looks cool + no hassle with the lock.
