2010 update
12/27/10 7:06 PM

This is just a little update on my bike...weather has not been cooperating here so in about 2 months i have about 1500 miles on her..It is getting faster but the fuel mileage is not what i was hoping, avr 36 mpg, which i guess is descent for what it is but i am used to around 48 mpg from the 03 R1 i had. but any who...i think the tires are junk. on my R1 i had Dunlap Q2's, and the tires on the 14 feel numb and like plastic compared to those. so iam either gonna get Bridgestone 016 or go back with the Michelins....i liked those as well. Great bike...all in all....love it

The big ZX14 engine is stuffed into the size of a grocery store cardboard box with the cylinders close together and a shallow oil pan. She makes a lot of heat, and a lot of horsepower. Ten years ago an engine of this horsepower would be 50% larger and heavier. or unaffordably expensive.

You will find that when you do some riding at cruising speeds, after about a year of break-in, she will edge up into the 250 mile range, 44 mpg-ish territory. The second you start twisting the throttle hard, that all goes out the window.

Amazingly versatile beast, to be sure.

low, I dodn't bother to check my fuel economy much because that isn't a reason I have for riding the bike. I recall seeing 40-some mpg on the multifunc meter (when I used to look at that lol). The fuel usage indication is pretty generous. I've never done the math very precisely to determine how much gas I burn but doing a rough estimate, seems like I could go roughly 200 miles on the highway before I ran out of gas. Starting with 5.8 gallons, that's less than 35 mpg.

I took the weight of gas in pounds to calc a mile. It was not that accurate where I could run it for a week and find a true average. 42mpg would be the best I could get out of it after it was well broken in. She loosens up more or say she begins to wear out, whichever suits your reality; less friction will add to your mileage.

Like blue says, you mess with that TPS in one direction, the mileage goes off the charts [wear] the smile-age happens for miles on end.

I know the difference between hopes and reality and I honestly believe these things run stronger LONG after break in. I'm at 25,500 and the 14 feels more wicked than it did at 9,000. On the conservative side, I can say that the 14 has at least not lost any power.

MAYBE....we just get more ballsy...you know...cocky.What is "normal"(or should I say...'scarey' for some) power and performance for the beginning 14 rider becomes after a while, well, kinda "less"...so we start upping the ante...and heading towards the REAL potential of our spaceships????I think....my bike runs better than ever everytime I head out...but is it really?Or is it just me feeling better about each new ride?It really DOES feel better than it did new....my God,I KNOW she's broken in by NOW(isn't she? )

140 klm/h used to be a good cruise speed then it became 160 then 180, the more you ride the slower the speed limit feels, cops and speed limits are a kill joy, would love a extra couple of liters in the tank.

If my guess is right, 200 miles = 322 kms. Never ran the 14 out of gas to test that--justa guess. All 200 Highway miles.

bean I get around 280k then res, maxed out at about 330k , but depends on the ride your having. 15.6 k/liter roughly in cruise mode.

I often go 250 miles now, if I know there is a gas station around the corner.

The RANGE mode is actually pretty accurate, I love how it floats from 150 up to 210, for example, when I set the cruise control and just motor along. The second I'm doing uphill or twisties, it goes back down again. But always seems to nail how far I can still ride, pretty close.

About 15.4 KM per litre. Comfortable range at 140 about 290 KM. Could stretch it, but I don't. That is two up at sea level. At altitude, I got 18 km/litre on my 06.
