Long rides
01/16/14 7:16 PM

I've spent 5 hours on my 14R, and am toying with the idea of doing a road trip to Las Vegas from the SF Bay Area. In my car it is an 8 hour haul. Wondering what's your stamina on the bike - in terms of hours. I was fine on my 5 hour ride, but glad to get off, but mostly due to dropping temperatures after dark getting into the low 40's, and I was wearing summer gear (It start out at 70 during the day, but dropped like a rock after dark).

I've done 6 hour hauls on other bikes just fine... seems to me as long as the weather is not cold or windy, should be good to go.

I went over 1000 miles with a short stop at a friends house to sleep a few hrs and later in the week did over 1000 miles stopping only for gas and food. It was no big deal other than having to hold the throttle - sometimes I'd get down on the tank and hold the gas with my left hand. Other than that....no big deal.....even w/ stock seat.

I can go at least 4 hours. That is my usual journey time to my hometown. I am glad to stop for gas and relax the hips after about 2 hrs. That's about as long as can go on a full tank of gas.

I've gone from New York City to Madison, Wisconsin (1000 milesish) nonstop last summer. I left New York around 7am and was to MadTown by sometime around mid night. I took one or two half hour/hour breaks along the way and made the mistake of trying to go through Chicago on I90 during rush hour and running into other road construction and rain and all that fun shit. You can do the 8 hours easy. I road stock seat, stock bar hight, stock everything on that trip, 3200 miles 5 days. Dress warm.

2 hours and until I NEED a break for gas and to stretch, I can do 4 hours, but I doubt a lot longer than that :(

Don't even bother going anywhere between Chicago and Milwaukee. It's like the TWilight Zone. Construction projects start and they don't end....years later still under construction. i found each of the 4 major expressways to the South East of Milwaukee jammed with traffic last summer. There was literally NO ESCAPE!

750 in one day is my longest. Left our base camp in NW Pa. 2 hours before daylight and got here at dark. 3-400 is a nice day ride. After that it gets a bit fatiguing.

Unfortunately I've never been on a reallly long road trip. The longest I've ridden was from New orleans, la to lafayette La and that was only about 2 1/2 hours. I unfortunately only have like 1 friend to ride with and we havent't ridden together in over a year so I'm mostly solo or I ride with my dad but he doesn't take real long rides. Furthest is to biloxi ms and back which is only about 45min 1 way but when I went to lafayette I was pretty comfy.

I think if I were to set out to do a really long trip I'd get myself a rear touring tire just for that. I basically wasted my good tire on the tour.........but the sides were still good....could made another 1000 leanin'

We did several 5-6 hour days on our Crater Lake trip last summer. No problems at all. We rode until we felt like stopping, could have gone farther but just wanted to take time to really enjoy the ride.

I can't comment on what to expect for weather, but my longest day on a zx-14 was Glendive, MT to home in northern WI. 710 miles in just over 11 hours. A set of bar risers, a ZG sport-touring screen, and a C-14 seat helped.

8 hours, sounds like a lot of time on 5 and 15? Any way to have a bit more time and take a less direct route? Ride through Death Valley?

Again, I have no idea about weather out there. I went over 120 in June of 2011 on my way through Yosemite and there was still a ton of snow on the sides of the roads.

I'm buried under several feet of snow here. I'll get no riding for a long time!

I would probably go I-5, cut over to Hwy 99 into Bakersfield, then 58 over the Tehachapi's, connecting up to I-15 and the SoCal madness. Lots of CHP on that stretch, and a lot of idiot drivers but I think having a bike, I'd own that stretch. Right now the weather is mid 70's and dry. Supposed to stay that way for the next several weeks.

I'll post photos or vids of the trip... :)

I'm still good for 6-7 hours, as long as I'm "moving". From my place to Tunitas Creek (near you) is about 1 1/2 hrs. The freeway drone to Hwy 84 is about half of that and I HATE it. But once I get to 84 and start heading your direction, I'm good for 5-6 hours, then dread the "home stretch" return That's on my 10R, (I'm 56), on the "14" the longest I've done so far is 4 hours. But again, it wasn't all freeway.
Not to damper your plans, but on the Vegas trip, I'd be so worried about it (the 14) getting stolen once I got there I wouldn't be able to relax. The getting there would be the least of my worries!
It's all good if you have a secure place though,(take a ride through the "Valley of Fire" beautiful!)

I do two long rides a year with a buddy that rides a Busa.... We head out in the spring like May then one in the fall like October. We head out at 3:00am from CT and got to the Tail of Dragon like 7:00 PM. It was a haul but great. I think it was like 810 miles. The other ride that was problaly the best yet was leaving CT at 3:00Am and getting to Nova Scotia by 6:00 pm sitting in a hot tub drinking scotch. What a freaking blast! Guys you gotta ride Nova Scotia. During the mid summer it's track days and short rides, but over all I'm good for 10,000 miles per year. We are planning a spring ride for May and thinking we're going to head back down to TN. Where is your most faverot place to ride to? We can only get away for three night/ four days. So it can't be to crazy far even know Id love to.....

BusaKiller1987, I stay in Rayne, La 20 miles west of Lafayette, La. We take trips to Bourbon street in New Orleans, We've rode to Houston, Texas. LOVED Houston man!! They drive fast there, 4 wheels doing 90-100, 5 lanes open highway on a weekend!!! We ride to twin peaks in Baton rouge frequently. Plan on taking a group ride to Atlanta, Ga this june leaving a thursday or friday and back on a sunday evening or monday morning, you should meet us on bourbon street next month and we'll ride to twin peaks.

Zoom, that's cool man. I haven't been able to ride too much lately. Have alot going on right now. I have a friend with a blue 2012 that lives in new orleans and he's ridden up to twin peaks a couple times. His name is Paul, you may know him. I actually drive to houston about twice a year to visit some friends but I've never ridden my bike there because I always have the wife and kid with me when I go but you are right they do drive pretty nuts out there. My bike will be down for a little bit as I plan on doing new tires, lowering link, extensions and a couple other things. I'm doing it at my house on the lift inbetween work and the family so it'll take a little longer. I'd love to go on a long ride with a few bikes. What kind of extensions do you have?

Most I've gone in a day is about 600 miles. Coming home from the Reno area and through Yosemite.
It was fun as hell and a great memory. My butt bothered me some the last couple of hours but not too much.
Have since gone through all of Death Valley and the surrounding area a few times. Averaging about 800-900 miles in two days. Really nice ride when you pick the "quiet" time up there.
I can't say enough about my 14. What a great bike!!!

You're all crazy! The most I can do on a highway is 1-2 hours. On back roads I'm good for 5-6 hours.
