Out of state purchase?
03/19/12 12:34 PM

I am having a hard time finding what I am looking for in my area. Have you made an out-of-state motorcycle purchase?

I've seen nice ZX-14's advertised on Craigslist, but nowhere closer to me. It would cost me an arm and a leg to rent a U-Haul van and drive from Florida to Philadelphia, or from Boston to Philly. If you have purchased a used bike on another state from a private owner, have you driven the bike back to your state?

What steps have you taken to have the tags/insurance paperwork ready before picking up the bike? Is this too much of a hassle?

Any suggestions?

I know, lol I'll have to say thanks to photoshop on the jacket logo, lol. But seriously, I am asking about a used bike, not one purchased from a dealership.

Thanks, I've been checking out the DC and New York area. My blog is in EspaƱol, lol English is my second language.

Here is a short post I wrote earlier this year in English about the NYC Motorcycle Show.

I bought a used 2009 14 from a guy in Virginia (I live in New Orleans) a few months back. He had pics, made me a video, etc and it seemed like a great deal. I was planning on flying up and riding it back, but it was December and rain was expected, so I just paid to have it shipped (about $700). The bike got here in perfect condition, and I've been in love ever since. It was a great sale experience overall.

I think arranging the sale, flying there, and riding back is a great idea; it'll give you 2 a chance to get to know one another right away! I would talk to the seller though and be very sure the bike is ready for that road trip. I would also get a video of the bike, something made since you start negotiating.

As for the paperwork, that stuff is really easy these days, but it varies by state. Just call a local title shop and they will be able to tell you exactly what you need to do.

Thank you Caroobs! Excellent idea about creating the video, it does help to get a better "picture" of the bike. I am glad it worked out for you. Thanks for the suggestions.

Thank you Miles.

As long as you have some paperwork, either from a dealer or from the private party, you should be OK to drive it home. Bring ins info with you, and have the paperwork with you.

Thanks Erik, I will be calling Pennsylvania DMV to check on that! I don't mind flying to another state and driving the bike home. Thanks.

I realize that you're looking at used bikes but I thought I'd mention that my local dealership has a new red 2011 model on the showroom floor. They're located in a suburb of Atlanta. If you'd be interested in calling them let me know and I'll get their phone number for you.

The red is pretty I must admit.

Fowvay, I think you are referring to this Augusta Kawasaki dealership. She sure is pretty, but is also over my budget. Thank you for the suggestion.

I've been emailing today with someone local, we even arranged a time to see the bike next Saturday. Unfortunately, I just received a text that the bike was financed and this person doesn't have the title, the bank does. The bike owner claims it will take about 30 days for the bank to email the title. I personally think is too much of a hassle.

It is!!!

It sure is. Nowadays I don't see how can I trust a complete stranger by handing them my money. In the meantime I have to wait while they paid off the loan, get the title sent to them, and then wait till they sent the title to me. I am sure there are trustworthy people out there, as well as plenty of con artists. Maybe others had a better experience dealing with a similar situation, I simply don't want to take that risk.

I just spoke with a guy from Atlanta who is selling his 2006 ZX-14 but the bike has 48,000 miles
