PM Romans right here on this site.
If you're interested in self tuning, he will probably suggest you keep the PC and add Autotune along with a flash. A flash alone should get you close but it will be mapped from some other Gen1 ZX-14 with similar mods so it won't be exact. If you want perfect for your engine, you have to tune even after flashing. My plan is to stay with stock ECU and self tune. End result is the same as a flash with perfect fueling and timing adjustments for my bike. All the electronics cost a lot more than a flash alone but I figure if I need that for perfection even if I get a flash, why not do it without a flash? I would like to increase my rev limiter just for fun. A flash is the only way to do that but there is no real performance benefit to revving over 11,000 rpm with the Gen1.
It breaks down like this for the Gen1:
Flash--simplest, most inexpensive way to remap but the effect is the same as going with the old school modules for timing and fueling. What if you want to try another flash?? You pay again. Now it is starting to not be so cheap. Look at what a custom tune from a reputable tuner would cost. Then ask yourself, "is a dyno tune as good as a real world tune" which I am sure Romans' is. Flash, Flash, Custom Tune, ding-ding$$$$$!! Don't forget, a backup unflashed ECU is desireable but there goes more cash. Self tuning starts to look not so expensive if you really get into this all the way.
Old school modules--Expensive. You have over a thousand bucks sunk in electronics but you can change and adjust to your hearts content once you have it all set up. Also highly illegal if you want to tune the upper revs--unless you buy access to an LSR course.
Flash + Modules--The best of both worlds. Also the worst meaning you paid for all of it and it's still illegal to do the multiple high speed runs you will need to do.
The story of how this all works starts on the page linked below and continues to the last post on this thread.
Sounds a little complicated but once you get the general concept, it all starts to look very straightforward (notice I didn't say "simple").
