2008 ZX14 ECU Flash Questions...
03/07/16 9:59 AM

Im looking to do this mod to mine but wanted to get some feedback from the forum...mine has a full Brocks exhaust with a PCV with Brocks tune...flies removed and other simple mods to stop decel pop...ive noticed theres a pronounced throttle snatch at mid RPM range with is very bothersome when running curves...i get a significant loud pop when upshifting also and when i let off and back on throttle...will an ECU flash help these issues and if so which company flash do you suggest...ive seen them from $75 from Schnitz racing to $375 from Guhl Performance...any opinions would be appreciated...

I've tried a few different flashes, In my opinion I'm happiest with Romans flash. He has tons of experience. He really has it perfected. I've also heard great reviews about Ivan from other people on here that I trust, but I have no first hand experience with him.

Since you have a PC5 already, I'd suggest Ivan.
Pay for his flash and get his PC map for free.

If you choose to ditch the PC5, I'd get in touch with Rick Roman's.
He shares his knowledge freely and stands behind his work.
Yeah, I know he's a Canuuk but still....:)

PM Romans right here on this site.

If you're interested in self tuning, he will probably suggest you keep the PC and add Autotune along with a flash. A flash alone should get you close but it will be mapped from some other Gen1 ZX-14 with similar mods so it won't be exact. If you want perfect for your engine, you have to tune even after flashing. My plan is to stay with stock ECU and self tune. End result is the same as a flash with perfect fueling and timing adjustments for my bike. All the electronics cost a lot more than a flash alone but I figure if I need that for perfection even if I get a flash, why not do it without a flash? I would like to increase my rev limiter just for fun. A flash is the only way to do that but there is no real performance benefit to revving over 11,000 rpm with the Gen1.

It breaks down like this for the Gen1:

Flash--simplest, most inexpensive way to remap but the effect is the same as going with the old school modules for timing and fueling. What if you want to try another flash?? You pay again. Now it is starting to not be so cheap. Look at what a custom tune from a reputable tuner would cost. Then ask yourself, "is a dyno tune as good as a real world tune" which I am sure Romans' is. Flash, Flash, Custom Tune, ding-ding$$$$$!! Don't forget, a backup unflashed ECU is desireable but there goes more cash. Self tuning starts to look not so expensive if you really get into this all the way.

Old school modules--Expensive. You have over a thousand bucks sunk in electronics but you can change and adjust to your hearts content once you have it all set up. Also highly illegal if you want to tune the upper revs--unless you buy access to an LSR course.

Flash + Modules--The best of both worlds. Also the worst meaning you paid for all of it and it's still illegal to do the multiple high speed runs you will need to do.

The story of how this all works starts on the page linked below and continues to the last post on this thread.

Sounds a little complicated but once you get the general concept, it all starts to look very straightforward (notice I didn't say "simple").

Im happy with the way the bikes runs now but what i dont like is the snatchy throttle...meaning when i downshift and roll back on the throttle theres that split second off/on jump in response...its like the bike dies for a split second and then jumps back on throttle...im just trying to find a solution for that...kinda scary when your running the curves and it jumps back on throttle in mid corner...

You would have to speak to Romans about that. That sounds like a possible rpm/mapping glitch. What it sounds like to me is the flies open response tat happens at about 2800-3000 rpm. Even if you have flies out, that will still happen if the fueling was not adjusted. Romans has also intimated that it has a lot to do with timing as well. If this is happening right at about that rpm range, I would almost bet that improper mapping was the culprit. They all do it stock. The 06-07 was worse because it happened at 6000 rpm.

Keith I received your E-Mail. I will give you my thoughts on the posts above.

mine has a full Brocks exhaust with a PCV with Brocks tune...flies removed and other simple mods to stop decel pop.

Mod list sound good. Although None of the above will cure your decell pop. TRE006A is the only bolt on part capable of completing this task 100%

.ive noticed theres a pronounced throttle snatch at mid RPM range with is very bothersome when running curves.

Yes very bothersome. The Gen 1 has a hole in the bottom end power. No denying that, I personally have spent small fortune working this fix for my own bikes. As the years passed and the tech progressed the fix made itself known.

.i get a significant loud pop when upshifting also and when i let off and back on throttle..

Alarm bells just went off. What RPM ? Is this when your riding at wide open throttle or just cruising? Popping on upshifting requires immediate study.

Send me your map with a exact description of the when and the where in the RPM and throttle position. I will make changes in your PCV Fuel Maps and send it back to you.

.will an ECU flash help these issues

All depends, from your description sure sounds like fueling issue to deal with first. Important to understand one Generic fuel map may not be perfect for all users. Sadly to many are led to believe one map or flash fits all.

i dont like is the snatchy throttle...meaning when i downshift and roll back on the throttle there's that split second off/on jump in response...its like the bike dies for a split second and then jumps back on throttle...im just trying to find a solution for that

Yes there is a solution. This can be fixed,

I get the feeling Romans has been pretty busy the last few weeks, morgstang. Keep after him. He'll reply soon. Perhaps he will be off of work over the holiday.

Just got my ECU back from Rick...went out for a ride and was very impressed with how smooth throttle response was...no more throttle snatch when you roll off and back on throttle...no more decel pop at all...used to have a loud decel pop at 3700 rpm which is now gone...very impressed...thanks again...

I too like decel popping. It's always been associated with performance engines. That I understand a properly tuned motor will have decel popping.

The bike has decel popping from the factory. Just the factory exhaust suppresses it well enough that unless you listen very carefully you can't hear it.

Morgstang You're more than welcome. You Gen 1 guys Have so much to gain in the bikes rideability. What's really nice in this case We did a ECU swap and you got to experience one ECU compared to another minutes apart. No denying the difference between Flashed and Stock.

Awesome. I really like the pop though.

Lol, ya I know some do. I for one hated that Explosion out the back taking place in my Two thousand Dollar pipes. I'm very sure the muffler Stuffing Box doesn't like it either. My view was and is it's "Not a Normal backfire" in that bike. Tooooo Muuuuccchhhh !

Vic I assume your talking about the little popping we get with the ZX 14R. Which is nothing in comparison to Gen ones. If so I agree that's fine. But the Gen1 ZX14 needs some love here. That bang in not right IMO. Remember we are tuning in the decell off the throttle, there is no performance to be had when your throttle position is Zero off the gas.

I can put it back in if you guys want ?

Next step is getting the fuel map right...exhaust was extremely black but not visibly smoking...by your suggestion i think im going to do the autotune and set it at 13.1 AFR...im not concerned about fuel mileage since its a playbike...i just want good performance...
