Running Hot
10/06/12 12:10 AM

This is my first post on this forum :) I recently purchased an 06 14 and it came with those retarded megaphone exhausts. I was so desperate to quiet the dang thing down that i put the D&D cans from my TL1000S on it. the megaphone install was a hack job so we had to fabricate mid pipes to accept the D&Ds. the bore on the cans is the same as the piping. Heres the thing though... the bike always runs hot now... I dont know if its a coincidental incident that just so happened to pop up at the same time i installed the cans or if maybe there's a back pressure issue thats making it run hot. I dont have a PC or anything else on it. The coolant level is fine... Im just puzzled and looking for opinions. buying a full exhaust system is out of the question right now. i just hope i dont have to go back to those god awful megaphones. thanks

By "runs hot" do you mean the blinking "hot" light has been coming on, or you're just feeling more heat from the D&Ds?

I'm sorry... should've clarified ha the temp gauge is almost always one bar short of full hot and even at highway speeds it will rarely drop to two bars

If I were you, I'd change the coolant and use Engine Ice or Redline with Water Wetter and make sure there is no air in the system. There's no reason it should have started running hot just because you added some D&D slip-ons in place of shorty megs. In fact, since there is now more surface area of exhaust system, it should run a little cooler because the exhaust acts as a partial heat sink, radiating accumulated heat into the atmosphere. You might also consider the addition of a Power Commander to take advantage of the freer-flowing exhaust.

It may run a little lean without the PC and they are lean from the factory, but it shouldn't be enough to cause actual overheating. Usually running hot has more to do with slow going and lack of air flowing to the rediator. But if there's any air that needs to be burped out of the system, it will act like it's trying to overheat, and very quickly. The air in the system compresses and the system won't properly pressurize.
