Valve Adjustment
10/14/13 3:30 PM

Can anyone give me some insight on the recommended valve adjustment schedule? I have about 5,700 and I'm thinking it might be time for the first valve adjustment because of mileage and maybe hearing a little bit of noise on startup. Oh and I have the 2011 model. Thanks guys

Noise on start up is most likely your cam chain tensioner (cct). CCT noise is common, It's not really a problem but if it annoys you it can be fixed by installing a modified zx12 cct. I changed out mine, you can get a modified one from carpenter racing. APE makes a manual adjuster if your comfortable adjusting it yourself, quite a bit cheaper I think.

Some good info you guys have given me, i appreciate it very much. I may end up getting another cct since the noise does annoy me a bit.

Note:

Wire D = The ratchet wire hoop in the middle of the ratchet adjuster barrel.
Wire \U/ = The trigger assembly wire that holds the ratchet in place when cam timing and the rest of the assembly occurs. You take a screwdriver long enough 'to push the inside of the chain rung' to get to the trigger wire from behind.

The whole trick to keeping the first gen start up noise from happening is to take the D-wire and collapse it so it is more tight around the ratchet barrel = Again. Right now, the D-ring is so far open and stuck in the wall housing [its positioned in when assembled] it's without tension on it, so the ratchet is whipping back and forth before the oil comes in to stop it.

You don't kink the wires, you pull them in far enough so as to shrink the D-wire back around the barrel. The \U/ wire only needs to hold the barrel in. You can't do that, then shrink the opening. When you push the chain rung, this slides the U-ring into that groove it sits in. The taper on the barrel end opens the U-ring wider in that groove and out pops the barrel. So the wider the U-ring, the more hair-trigger is the chain touch with less force.

Signed,

NOLTT's same noise and when I set the valves, I shrunk the tensioner rings. Never heard a peep again. You need a new tensioner like you need to change the dash the 6th gear is stuck with your limp in play. YeaHA!

an auto adjust from carpenter was $140 and the manual one runs about 40-50 it seems. manual is def cheaper just dont think i want to have to worry about adjusting it as needed.

I felt the same as you, I installed the carpenter cct and haven't heard a rattle sound since and haven't even thought about it until your post. That makes it worth the money to me.

It is easy to adjust an APE manual tensioner and they work great.

Very good detailed instructions. Not as bad as I thought. Definately seems like a job that a "light engine work" type of guy like myself can do. Thanks rook.
