Starting to research standalones and aftermarket ECU setups and am curious if anyone has any experiences, positive or negative, that they'd like to share. I am open to any suggestions but am primarily looking at two different setups - the MaxxECU package from BoostbySmith, due to the plug and play nature and current popularity for ZX14s, and a Haltech, since I am familiar with their ecosystem and besides supporting neat laser based wheelie control and advanced TC, it also seems like Haltech can directly control the VVT solenoid on the Concours to maintain VVT function (which helps spool).

Any one have any preferences or thoughts? I planned to wait until I put the built motor in for the standalone, but I am so tired of working around the quirks and annoyances of the stock ECU that now I am thinking of doing it first. Any modern ECU will be a huge upgrade for boost based tuning, proper injector scaling, and boost control capability, so TC and wheelie control is probably most important to me since I cannot stretch or regear my bike making first and second gears basically useless right now.

I'd like to keep stock dash so compatibility with factory gauges would be nice, but I am not against doing an aftermarket LCD dash.

Lots and lots of research has me leaning more towards the Haltech, which is overall a much more advanced setup. While the MaXXECU has some neat features and is basically plug-and-play with the BoostbySmith harness, and would be the better choice for someone unfamiliar with vehicle wiring or standalones, the Haltech supports much more advanced TC and has an input for laser wheelie control which I really like. More importantly, the shop I work at does a lot of late model EFI stuff (cars, not bikes) and our in house tuner who specializes in boosted EFI tuning prefers Haltech and runs one in his personal car so I will have literal daily contact with someone who can help me deal with any issues I run into and assist in dialing in the tunes.

After talking it over with him, we will also likely make our own custom CANBus dash, and replace the factory gauges/dash with an LCD screen w/bluetooth for easy tune adjustments directly from a phone. This will allow me to get rid of both my boost gauge and wideband, cleaning up the front end and removing some wiring and random controller boxes from under the seat/tail.

Haltech also has a much more usable website with better written guides, and a lot more information available for troubleshooting the inevitable hiccups I will run into, and price wise a mid range Haltech 1500 and a DIY harness is quite a bit cheaper than the MaXXECU+boostbysmith setup.

Plug and play boost by smith kit is convenient, but maxxecu isn't the only option that works. curious to see what you end up doing

Thanks, Pretty set on the Haltech but I tend to change my mind multiple times before committing so we'll see lol. I didn't plan on going standalone until I install the built motor, but I really want the advanced boost control, wheelie control, TC, flex fuel sensor, etc. As fun as it is to brag about big numbers, in reality more power isn't going to do anything for me if I already can't use what it makes now.

Hey Puck, unrelated question. I had a 2011 Concours I'd put over 20k on while I was living on Maui and had done all the typical maintenance on. Do you have any concerns with the rear drive and shaft configuration including the rear wheel hub splines being able to handle the power?? The parasitic loss through the drive must be pretty challenging to?

I couldn't find anyone with a similar combo on a Connie (the closest was same boost(10psi), but with a smaller turbo and pump gas/less timing), but from my research on the very limited available info the rear swingarm starts to be a problem over ~300hp crank since the TQ makes the shaft side try to lift independently from the brake side. I'm probably right around there (getting dyno'd finally tomorrow) so I plan to weld on a reinforcement brace to unify the two sides and hopefully prevent that. I have pretty much an entire spare drivetrain to replace parts in case I find their limits - a spare trans, low miles spare motor that I am stroking and building up on the side, spare swingarm, two driveshafts, etc. Big benefit to the Connie vs my last 14R is that Connie parts are dirt cheap and plentiful in comparison. All my spare parts - basically an entire second bike minus frame, wheels, and fork - cost me half of what just a 14R motor would run me.

I'm not worried about the driveshaft itself, its incredibly beefy and I doubt it would be an issue below 400+hp. Parasitic loss is definitely high, I'm estimating it around 13% vs maybe 6% for a chain drive. ChatGPT claims 15% but that sounds high to me based on what we see on the dyno vs rated crank, so its either less than 15% loss or Kawi is underrating them by ~5-10hp at the crank, not sure which.

Realistically the whole build is overkill, since being unable to stretch it or regear it and not having wheelie control or TC means that anything over 6-7psi can't really be used anyway since it just pulls the front end, even with the longer wheelbase and all that extra weight it has to move around. Makes it a lot of fun though!
