DragMeister, what is your current oil burn rate in ounces per one thousand miles on your 14? I just changed oil yesterday and took very accurate measurements on the drain oil on mine and it ain't pretty.

Still don't know where it's all going, I do have the typical leaking rocker cover on the left side but how much oil could that be leaking? I see a whisp of oil mist on the left side fairing and can smell it burning off the header but no smoke from my exhaust and the tail pipes have only carbon fluff from my rich Ivan mapping. No oil back there on the tail pipes.

I need to get off my dead butt and reseal that rocker cover and see if it makes any difference, cant' see how but I've been wrong before.

HubMeister, do you know a way to differentiate between fluff on the tail pipe from an oilburner and one setup with rich fuel mapping? I always went by dry black, carbon fluff = rich mixture, wet or moist you got a burner. If it's burning a lot of oil, it should show up wet on that tail pipe....no?

Go down to the left side of the bike near the shifter. Down under that fairing area is that miniature pickle barrel kind of clear catch tank. See if oil is there in that vile. If so, overfilled is the crankcase. Oil peppered is the ram chamber: is one variable.

Guide suck and pumping type lubing [where the valve] sits under. So with that oil pocket under the shim bucket, the seal being partially dry [sits] not being lubed per say, those are a lot of seals to keep oil from creeping into and washing off of, are those strokes after strokes watch the valve opens and closes on the suck. Watch the cylinder chamber become more [oil] coated: possibly wet. Watch the lube burn on the exhaust side she opens that length that was hidden on the close is now being lubed again [on the close] and burned again on the open.

The spark plug will tell. Oil burns hotter than gas so water temps might play a variable. Oil burns that hot and heat melts metal. The oil to gas ratio has been minor with your/our bikes, Kruz. Two strokes run 50/50 and that is not hot enough to burn it down. Takes a higher oil ratio to let one det to death.

Those turbos blow that center blade seal/gasket?; for the mini rollers is it?; or however that spin is cooled; that seal lets go she will crack the piston; hammer the dome; lock the rings by doing it; now lost compression. You have turbo oil coming in: feeds all that oil into the engine and the ratio becomes perfect = Detonation!

I wouldn't worry about it. With the hard break in of my '08 Mule220psi, yes, I kept adding oil between an average of dumping oil per every 2,700 miles. Test Mule-R was broken in by the book. Never added a drop, nor did the oil lower itself since watching that factory oil on the center stand for the consistency. And I dumped it [once] at 600 miles: as per book.

Where did mule220 lose oil?

Valve = Minor weight if seals are good. If bad, watch lift then accel = Puff
Rings = Minor move again if broken in well. If not, then a constant even if idling = Puff
Crankcase = Major loss if ring pressure is a cause, which adds more blow down to a crankcase that does not need more air nor oil.
Poor break in = Major loss of oil between changes.

about 2/3 of a quart / 2500 miles when it gets bad enough to run down the side.

oil change: ~4.33 quarts to fill crtankcase and oil filter. I was adding about a third of a quart after 1500 miles. then needed to add the last third of that "extra" quart we need to buy to top it off for the last 500 miles or so. That was at it's worst. When it first started leaking, I think I was only adding about 1/3 quart / 2500 miles.

Rook, since repairing that rocker cover leak what is your oil useage now?

Sorry Kruz, just saw this earlier today. I'm just shy of 1000 miles on the new oil. Had less than that on the other batch (I think I high sided at around 400 miles). Anyways, I just came back from the garage where I had let her cool down and everything is kosher. The oil just started to darken a little but the level is the same. I even marked spots to make sure I get a surgical reading every time.
*I'm still using Motul 300 Dble Ester but I added some Petron Additive this time.

My cover leak is completely fixed as the side of the motor is flaky dry. My oil cap was busted from over tightening and I replaced it. It's far fetched but I could have been loosing oil that way too. The most plausible cause: I still bleep the throttle every change I get but I haven't been far in the country on those long sweepers where I usually keep her close to red line for 20-30 minutes at the time. I found out I had lost a lot of oil when I returned from my trip to the sisters! I should be at around 2000 miles on this oil at the end of the month. I will give you an update then

Also oil can actually evaporate so what you're finding is just part of what's coming out.

Hello DragKing, I did a very careful measure of my oil consumption over the past 1800 miles and changed it Saturday. The results were not good, as accurate as I could measure, 36 ounces of oil used in 1800 miles, a little over 1 quart.

The rocker cover leak could be a good part of that, I smell oil burning off the exhaust header on engine shutdown and get a little oil mist on the right fairing. Been too lazy to open it up and fix it lol, too busy with the other bikes.

I think what you say is right, a lot of guys do highway miles on these things, steady and low rpm and fairly long distance so they don't use much oil. I do short rides and hold a lot of WOT and high rpm which causes these big motors to blow some oil out of the breather or past the rings who knows where it goes? Bottom line is my engine runs fantastic, still on the original sparkplugs at 18,000 miles.

I don't remember how much I was loosing but I remember loosing close to half the capacity so my numbers were similar to yours. Once you fix the cover leak you should see a lot of improvement. There might be oil going pass the pulsar cover as well. A track day at COTA would have been the ultimate test but I had to sell my tickets because of a new job
I would do the washer fix just to save some $$ now and you can replace the gasket, bolts and plugs when you're ready for the valve clearance check.

TAKE THAT BACK!

Went on a group ride yesterday. About 300 miles. Triple digit sweepers in third, slow corners in 1st and 2nd, and sustained speed in the triple because the second group couldn't keep up with the racers up front and had to blast the straights! On the way back, I got stock in traffic since a lot of people here seem to leave work around 3 pm.
RESULT: 200 ml loss LOL

Like you mentioned in a previous thread, it's not as bad as a 2008 Fire Blade. A guy in the group mentioned that his was burning 1/2 quart every 1000 miles. I think I will just by a new bike for track days. I'm going to trash the 14 and pile the miles up and keep her as a long distance tourer. When I get in track days heavily, I will transfer the goodies to the track bike during spring summer and transfer them back for trips during the fall.

That's a liter in 1500 miles, pretty close to what I use, I think it's the high rpm.

Yeah last time I had a lot missing I had gone to the sisters... we're talking about 800 miles of high RPM. I doubt I will use more than a quart for every 2500-3000 miles if I do, I'm just going to have to ride less and stop using the bike as my main commuter.
