Crashed my ZX14R
10/03/24 8:34 AM

Hey everyone, it finally happened. I had my first major crash, and it was on my ZX14R. I live in a mountain town and commute 15 miles down the mountain to my work down the hill. I've made thousands of trips down this mountain, as I don't own any cars and just ride my bikes to commute. I hit a big patch of sand and gravel in a turn, luckily I wasn't going too fast as its a pretty sharp turn, and I don't drag knee or anything like that. I ended up braking my collarbone and messed up my whole right side of my body pretty bad. The most pain i've ever experienced. My bike was towed, I didn't see what shape it was in, so I have to track it down today and see where it is. Hopefully the bike is fine. But yeah, be careful out there, it was just another day for me, but you never know what's around the corner. Ride safe.

Wow, not the way to start the day! Breaking your collarbone is pretty serious, so glad you are managing. The bike can be replaced, you can't.

G'Day Matt,

Certainly not what you wanted or needed but the fact you are able to tell us the tale is a very good thing compared with the alternative.

All the best healing up...

I know how bad it sucks man. I didn't break anything but the worse part of it is the loss of the beloved bike. I hope yours is in ok condition. If the bike didn't flip, it's probably all fixable. Most importanbtly you lived to tell the tale but after that, there's the bike and it doesn't heal up on its own like you will. Speedy recovery. Get back up and ride. You and I will both be a little more careful after going down but there's still riding after a crash.

I know, I haven't seen the bike yet, but I'm releasing it to Insurance for them to tell me how it is. I'm just in bed on painkillers for the moment. I did not know breaking a collarbone would hurt this much. Literally the worst pain of my life. I hope I'm able to keep the original bike, I love that thing, and now we have even more history together. Thanks everyone for your kind words. Be safe out there! I'll keep everyone updated with the bike conditions, and hopefully some photos as well.

Unfortunately, insurance deemed my bike a total loss. I feel horrible right now. Especially because I just did a 1,200 dollar service on it the week prior to the accident. ZX14R's are hard to come by used in my area, but I hope I can find one.

Rest up a while. Search far and wide and you'll find exactly what you're looking for. ZX-14s don't sell that well. If you find what you want and you can cut a deal, rent a trailer and go get it.

I'm going to take my ZX to my shop and see if the frame is still good. If so, Im just going to take the insurance money and rebuild it myself with non-oem parts. Any advice on non OEM fairings/exhaust/etc. I was using the Yoshi R77's, but I might get something cheaper this time around, maybe just some M4's or VooDoos.

Sorry to hear this and understand what youre going thru. Last month I was rear ended while waiting to turn left and my Busa was totaled. I bought it back and rebuilt it with used oem ebay parts. If you would like to keep the R77's I have a set of C/F ones for 2012 and up. I have had good results with Monster fairings in the past as far as fitment and quality. They will give you free shipping if you ask but it will not be as fast if you pay for it.

I have also had good experience with Monster Fairings for projects that I have worked. OEM or custom colors with solid fit and finish.

Steel frames bend and can be straightened. Aluminum frames crack. Ask me how I know. Strip the bike down and look for cracks. Frame are bucks up. Lucky if you can find one if they used the engine for dwarf cars.

Well, I'm having it inspected within a day or two, if the frame is damaged I am going to take the cash value that the insurance is offering and look for another ZX. I've thought about getting a different bike, but the ZX just has a hold on me. It's a perfect missile.

I also had some good news, insurance is paying me for all my broken gear, so it looks like I'll be shopping soon for some new goodies.

Also, I tried to send a private message @suzy1052 inquiring about the R77 exhaust, but I'm not sure if it went through.

I was going to say, "M4" if you're into loud. I'm sure Voodoo sounds nice too.

I have friend who bought brand new slipons and never installed them. He crashed the bike and I imagine he wants to sell that now. IDK what brand the exhaust is.

Update: I went to the shop and saw the bike for the first hand and guess what, IT WASN'T AS BAD AS I THOUGHT! Most of the damage was cosmetic, so I am just going to get an aftermarket fairing kit, a mirror, a brake lever, a pulser cover, and I'm pretty much golden! I am very happy.

Good to hear the damage isn't as bad as estimated. Keep healing up.
