I run the bolts in all the way. Mark one flat. Match rotations till we are down to the final chain slack number. Then I count off one flat at a time because it's getting real close once the initial slack is taken up.
And here we go [again].
Your way works perfect, dar. We can see if both will match with a block check or a flat check. I would say yours may be the better move.

You need to run a straight edge from the rear tire to the front. That's the only correct way to do it. A string works good for me. It's not an easy job to do correct. You may want to get a friend to help you. Another thing I've done is lay a straight edge on the chain, up against the rear tire. That usally gets you close.

I'm going to side wind dear me, say I side wind the engine a 1/2" off in the engine bay and wankle the universal joint a little too and man she hauls ass up a banking if you are going in the right direction is when I read that kind of shit, I want to know where the fucking guy rides, in a bathtub?
I'll remove a wheel spacer and cock the wheel off to the side and now go ride that buddy; around the tube's dirty drained [chain spit] ring and wave with one hand.
Read my lips. That is a FLAT out NO!
This is 1 and 1/2" away from the plastic guard. If the chain guard was not there, we could extend past the guard. So, with that much float, and the way a chain lines up from the factory in a plane anyway, why would you aim for a chain that is going to float even between the rollers it's wide and will line up, you now neglect the tire tracks.
The chain is not in contact with the ground... The chain is not in contact with the ground... Crazy legs ass left the building... No, right, he turned right out the building.
