The outer plastic cap/cover of the tail/brake was cracked and now a 2 inch chunk has broken off. This hole now allows dirt, moisture, and water in. A small amount of water pools inside. The lights work (for now) but sooner or later that excess water puddle inside is likely to do bad things to lights or wires.
Dealer sez just plastic cover is not a separate item, In order to replace it I need to buy the complete tail light assembly for $225. Does that sound right? All I want is the plastic cover. The clear plastic baggie that I taped over the hole just dont cut it. What are my options? The crack that is now a hole is gettin to be a pain in my ass!

PS I was thinking about gettin an old VMAX but bought an old CBX instead (1982) today. Boy, and I thought my ZX was heavy, the CBX feels morer like a GOLD WING

Rather than pay $225, I would do a little research and see if you can find some positive reviews of a Chinese copy. I have read good and bad regarding fitment. I feel pretty comfortable ordering a Gen1 aftermarket tail light off of Ally Express. By now, they should have the fitment right and if they don't, it's worth a try because the whole assembly costs about $50 + you can get smoked (if you like that) and cool high frequency flash superbright LEDs and integrated turn signal/tail light.

I have doubt it is impossible to just buy an OEM lens. I believe that is glued to the tail light asssy. That was back in the 60s before we evolved into the throw away society we are today.

I;m sure there are US companies that sell aftermarket lights too but without having looked into it, I bet they sell stuff that was made in China.

If the moral implications don't bother you, buy all the Chinese stuff you want ASAP. It might not be available at the bargain prices it is for long. Other than some anodized color problems, I've had good luck with the quality and fit of Chinese parts I've purchased.

Thanks guys! I had no idea. I ordered one today from ebay. Total cost with shipping = $44. Way better than $225. I don't really give a hoot where it's made or shipped from. As long as....
I'll let you know how it works out when I get it. ( a few of weeks)
