Battery please
10/18/18 4:37 AM

Hi Guys , A silly question sorry.

What kind of Battery do I buy for my bike, mines not keeping charge for longer than 12 hours on its own.

Next silly question, How do i access the battery, obviously its not under the seat, yes I looked there first, lol.

Hi Maddy,
The battery is under the "Foreman grill" on the right side. I'm not sure about the Gen2 but on my
06 I take off the grill part then access the battery door. I have a Shorai in there now. I got the 21 a/h one. It's been in there for 3 years, still going strong.

yep, its just below your right knee in the pic in the frame under the tank - access from the side as Mad Dog has said

The choice is the stock Yusa type ~70$ US and 8 lbs you will fine in there or the high $$$ lightweight Shori type model ~$200 US and ~ 3 lbs

The Gen1 and Gen2 are the same. I recently replaced my 2006 ZX14 battery. I've been riding like 50 years and had about that many bikes, but I have never seen a non-sealed AGM battery before this past week. I needed a battery fast and local. The only one available was an Interstate that comes with the acid on the side! You put the acid in let it absorb for 30 minutes, then charge for a couple hours and place the cover on! Maybe these type batteries are more common that I think, but it is the first one I have seen or purchased. If I had the time to wait, or it was available locally I would have purchased the Shorai.

The good news is it seems your 2013 made it about 5 years on the original battery, which I think is pretty good

Mine lasted a least a year less than that, and since I bought my '13 in May 2014, probably more like only 3 years.

YTX14-BS = A 12v 14a rated battery.
BS = Battery acid supplied.

The Prep:
1. Fill acid and let the liquid soak into the pleats... Over one hour first thing.
2. After that hour, charge battery per formula (see below).
3. Drain battery down to 1 to 2v, then recharge.
4. Repeat 2 more times, meaning, charge per formula, deplete battery down to 1-2v, recharge.

The Drain:
a. Use the high beam headlight filament side, and a brake light filament side for its high intensity.
b. Use jumper cables because the heavy wire will take the heat, the alligator clips off the jumpers attach to the high beam and brake light filaments.
c. If just a single bulb is used, it just means it takes longer to drain down to the 1v.

The Formula:
12N12a = A 12v 12a battery.
Move the decimal point over to the right once on the amp rated battery.
This means you need a 12v charger with a 1.2a rated charger.
This too means, you cannot use a 1.2a rated charger in a 1.4a rated battery.
Read the back of the charger before purchase. Walmart has a 1.5a rated charger and this is the one you want.
This means you literally charge the battery at 1.4a for 14 hours straight.
This means you literally charge a 1.2a rated battery for 12 hours as per formula.

The Theory:
You are chemically mixing the water and acid as if mixing oil and vinegar to make one liquid, not separated with a few stirs of the fork, or utensil of choice, in other words. So the more it's mixed, the better the reaction, longevity, etc.

Now install the battery for service after 3-times the charm.

Get it? And if you don't follow formula, more than likely the battery life is maybe cut in half. My initial prep has shown the battery can last as much as 6 years as opposed to 'wet and install' and may last 3 years.

NOTE:
Can I use a 10a charger? Yes. But... here is the deal. I walk away from a 10a and let it charge for hours on end, no. Why? The difference is boiled water bubbles as opposed to champagne bubbles. In other words, the boil size bubble will split the soaked plates and separate them. The low amp charger creates tiny champagne bubbles that ooze out of the pleats. So if the battery case gets hot to the touch, pull the plug and let the battery case cool. If say you want to run the low amp charger for said hours, then cook the solution with the 10a for 15 minutes say, then yes, you can reach the peak charge a little quicker to deplete the voltage down again.

Charged, the meter might show 13+ volts if say you pull the plug and check immediately. But overnight say, it runs down to 12.8v, this is an ideal number after it sits static hours off the charger.

I'm a little late to the party, but here's a suggestion. I just replaced my OEM battery after 6 1/2 years, AND it was still going strong. Almost unheard of. I only replaced it because I just went on a 2200 mile trip and didn't want to take the chance of it acting up. Because of the long life, I went right back to the OEM battery. It is NOT a Yuasa. It is a Furakawa, and it was reasonably priced at my dealer, discounted.

2012 and 2013 are the same part number, so I assume it's the same battery.

The only Pb/H2SO4 battery I would consider other than YUASA or Furukawa would be DeKa. Superior Pb construction and processing.

The quality of the Pb makes or breaks a battery.

A girl on a monster sport bike forum asked a question on "Battery Please" and after 20 reply no one asks about the vibrator model the batteries are for

WTF is wrong with the world today?

OK Maddy tell us about the big boy you need a yusa or a fuckawhooohooo to operate and Hub will reply on the proper acid to take while you use it

Oh how, oh how did I miss this opportunity to troll Maddy from down under. It would have been epic and Maddy would have gotten 'Mad' at me once again. Asking silly question in an effort to do a little flirting, show off her rack, and get the guys to feel like men by helping her with a question that a 2 second google search would have answered.

Next time Maddy, upload a nice butt pic, pass it off as belonging to you, and twice as many guys will answer any question you might ask like..."how do you add brake fluid to a brake fluid reservoir?"

Maddy - I hate you Knov! I trust these guys with my life. Not many womens know how to hold a wrench, let alone turn it in the right direction!

Hi "The big Ninja" I got the bike with "Givi" saddle bags on it, great for big long trips.
