Auxiliary power for heated grips, GPS
10/12/16 12:45 PM

Does anyone have suggestions where I can hook up auxiliary power to my ZX-14r? I want to hook up my GPS, and heated handle grips. I was thinking of hooking it into the front headlights.

Turn the bike on, the front lights come on and the GPS turns on too. Turn bike off, and it automatically turns off.

Thoughts?

Good idea for a GPS but I wouldn't power heated grips on that circuit because the power requirement for the lights and grips will be to much, and you don't want to pop a fuse and lose your headlights while you are riding. You could use the headlight power to switch a relay that brings fused power directly from the battery for your grips. I plan to add grips this year too and that is the way I will be connecting them.

Horn has a flat blade connector end. Buy a piggyback connector that rehooks the horn back on, and the aux (male end) blade is used for accy power by connecting a female end for the grip's wire. The one wire is power at the horn. There is your fuse setup for the grips... if say the horn fuse blows.

Depending what year you have it may or may not have power at the horn.

< 2012 has power at the horn and horn button injects ground

>= 2012 has ground at horn and horn button injects power.

The hot side of the horn/tail light circuit is easy to tap into, I can't remember for sure but
the horn/tail light circuit is like 10amp or 15amp.

Just figure your amps you are going to use and fuse your add on fuse lower then the circuit,

CirKit Boss Auxiliary Fuse Block/3 Circuits/Weatherproof

I installed this under my seat. The relay is powered by the tail light and the circuits are powered by the battery. Each circuit has it's own fuse. I'm powering heated grips, a usb charger for my phone, radar detector, and some other heated gear. Adding some aux lights this spring. It was an easy install.
