New 2015 Zx-14 clatter noise at start up
06/15/16 6:41 AM

I just turned 900 miles on my 2015 Zx 14. Every morning when I start her up I'm hearing upper motor clatter for couple minutes. Not real loud but settles down and goes away after couple minutes. It's bran new bike. Should I be worried? Oil changed at 600 miles and at correct level.

If its a new noise, back to the stealership for a warranty inspection. I would bring in in on a trailer and let them hear it start up cold and make the noise. Let them tell you its nothing to worry about so if it blows up later you should be covered. If they say its fine I would run it another 1K miles, dump the oil and send a sample to Blackstone for analyses just to be safe.

Answer yes to all these questions.
1. Does this sound more like cam chain noise?
2. Does it go away before literally 5 seconds or less?
3. Does the engine make the same noise hot when turned off and then back on after the doughnut and coffee run?

I think crud nailed it. Tow it, get it written up, dated it, mileage, etc. Field fix #1 on a revised cct that began in 2012 of the second gen engine. First one I've heard of... if that's it. That's why less damage towing if it's not! Still your bike. So with the morning noise being right there for them to order a new cct assembly and new oring don't forget.

Unless you've been hearing this for a few times, noise stops within seconds, more you video the noise on the cell phone, ride over to the dealer and let them hear it? They'll order the part and here comes the big job to snap the tensioner plunger out to the slipper rail.

That's all that plastic off, pop the top valve cover off, stick a screwdriver at the rear slipper arm/rail/whatever it's a mess. So that too calls for a rubber top cam cover gasket... IF... it's the cct.

To me it sounds like minor valve noise. It could be tensioner. It does not go away in 5 seconds. The sound immediately start to get lighter and lighter and lasts only couple minutes. Once motor is at operating temperature there is no noise. Even if it sits for hours. Just when completely cold.

I like the idea of recording it and bringing to stealership. I don't trust my local one so I'd rent trailer and take it 50 miles down roar to Naples and get it looked at. 1000 miles on her after today so plan to change oil at 1200. May just do now and seeverything if noise there after oil change.

And I've only had bike couple weeks so don't see how vicosity would be broke down so don't think I need to send oil in. Changed oil on first day after hitting 600 mile break in. And almost to 1200 mile change.

My bike had a lot of cam chain noise early on. It can be rather loud, and scary... until reading more about cam chain noise and understanding that's what the sound was I thought my bike was going to throw a rod or something. It subsided over time and hasn't been present sense I don't know when.

Now it sounds more like piston knock, expands, then quiets down. Say yes to all these.
1. We see a puff of smoke upon cold startup?
2. We see a puff of smoke when hot startup?
3. We wasting our time going to a dealer with normal break in noise?

It does not puff any smoke at all. No smells, no dirty looking pipes. First 5 to 10 seconds is loudest but not scary sounding. Just little chatter. It lightens to nothing with 2 minutes and way before temperature even registers on display.

No smoke ever. No dirty pipe. Noise loudest for first few seconds then lightens to nothing way before temperature even registers on display. It could be tensioner. It's not a loud sound just noticeable

Have you done work to make sure the sound is coming from the engine? Its not enough to just stand there and look at it. You need to be moving your ear all around the bike front, back, side to side, lay down and listen up. Sounds silly but it will help you identify where the rattle is coming from. My guess based off everything you have said so far is that you have an exhaust shield rattle but that is just a guess. Oh and my 2015 which was purchased in Feb or march has made zero funny sounds of any kind so keep investigating because its not normal. I would ride it though and not worry unless you think a wheel is about to fall off because it sounds like you are stock and you have done nothing wrong so enjoy your toy.

Noise is upper part of motor. Yes stock. Only few comfort mods so far. It is in motor.

You can use a large screwdriver like a stethoscope by putting the handle next to your ear and putting the blade against various parts of the motor. Possibly pin down the area of noise..

I recorded sound. Little hard to hear metallic clatter sound on recording. The more I listen I think it may be tensioner.

Loose exhaust stud bolts. Other than that; zero noise on my end. Sounds normal.

After loading her on trailer and driving hour to dealership to see about this noise, was told it's normal and they don't hear anything. Whatever! Guess I'll see if it goes away or gets worse. Told me to put louder exhaust on it and I won't notice. Friggen hate stealership! Anyway guess I'll see! Yes I'm paranoid, yes I am anal about my bikes! But still swear I hear something that's not right...

600 mile service is more than an oil change. 600 mile service includes a bolt tightening inspection and other checks. Bolt tightening inspection includes the exhaust header bolts. So if they were loose and that's the source of the noise, then it should've been taken care of.

I don't hear anything myself. Sounds normal.
