Guys, with such a huge performance market in USA and shops that have been porting ZX14 heads since 2006, why is it you never see performance heads for sale used? Where are all the CNC ported heads? Even older ones that have been superseded? Are people afraid to give away their secrets so they would rather bin them than sell them? Even to overseas buyers?

I look forward to the replies on this.

I got nothing to contribute on (used) Ported Heads,
hopefully someone comes along with some info.

Maybe the custom porting work is so personalized to
'their' bike that they don't feel like anyone is
going to want it when they've moved on to a
different spec, so they just discarded it.

Ha! I'm going to take a wild guess and say: Racers are hoarders for life... practically. When they retire they'll sit on it for a decade or two, Then find they will never run those or be installed on something again. And only then will they move and part with them.

Here's my thoughts: a ported head is a real specialty item. Generally, it is the probably the head that came with the bike so the only part the owner has to fulfill its function. There is no reason to ever sell it as long as the bike runs. If it were an aftermarket part, there would be other aftermarket parts to upgrade to or the stock part (i.E. slipons to race exhaust or back to OEM mufflers). Of course, there are bikes that don't run anymore. The OEM parts from these bikes are probably sought after mostly by people who want to replace OEM with OEM which a ported head actually is. Few people are looking for any ZX-14R head let alone willing to pay more for a ported one. Selling a ported head as just a "head" increases the likelihood someone will buy it at all which might be more important than selling to the small number of people who want it ported. The used parts dealer probably didn't pay more for the wreck because the head was ported. He probably would rather sell the whole engine rather than just the head which would then make the engine less salable.

A ported head is rare. It would only sell off a damaged engine which now makes it even more rare.
