Bug Guts and Paint Damage!
05/14/12 8:15 AM

I may have left some bug splatter on the front fairing for a little too long. There appears to be paint damage from the little critters,I Googled it and as they decompose, apparently an acidic residue forms that can damage clearcoat. I didn't know this but it can also etch into plastic windscreens and head light lenses. Anyway, the damage is done, does anyone know how to fix it? It looks like a slight haziness in the paint wherever the bug splatters were, not that noticeable until I washed and waxed yesterday, now you can really see it when the bike is parked out in the sun because of the contrast between the high gloss of the undamaged areas.

Rook was suggesting claybar but I want to save that as a last resort, maybe a cleaner wax might gently remove the surface damage? Anyone dealt with this before?

Turtlewax ICE liQuid Claybar

3M Scratch remover was recently recommended. Both products very similar. I like the 3M product even better than the Turtlewax LCB.

Save the applicator sponge for wax application. Just use a microfiber cloth to apply this stuff. 100-200 vigorous rubs and it will look BETTER than new. I use this stuff every year and and hand buff all my plastics. They are smoother than the OEM finish now. Also works great on plastic like the headlights and windscreen. Might leave a few ultra fine swirls behind but wax it once with some of that nano tech stuff and they are gone for ever. I use ICE paste polish. Applies same as wax.

See, here's a little bug I found stuck on my bike.

Ice cream will remove a lady bug very quickly, bug splatter is another issue,I try to keep my front area waxed,it makes it much easier to remove bugs and bird droppings, which are also very acidic

Damage is already done with the clear coat. No wax is going to fix the clear coat but you could start using wax to prevent any more damage. Might could use 3M lens re-finishing kit to work on the plastic headlights. You could probably try it on the windscreen also.

False alarm, I don't believe there is any permanent harm. It looks like a simple case of waxing over the bug debris. Apparently the detergent I was using wasn't strong enough to remove dried bug guts and I didn't notice until too late and I had waxed over it. Hey, what can I say, I'm half blind....lol!

My ZX10R had the same collection of bug splatters and Simple Green melted the stuff right off. So now the issue is should I strip the wax off and start over or just leave it alone and get it off with the next wash job?

BTW Rook, that sure is a cute little critter you got on your 14.

Try using liquid glass on your bike after a couple of treatments nothing will damage your paint. We use it on aircraft.

I have a can of Liquid Glass.Think I'll get the bugs off then use the glass.Used it on My ZRX and it looked beautiful.A friend with a Harley suggested it.20 bucks a can.Said keep on adding coats and it was as advertised.

I plan to clear coat my bike at some point. Maybe a couple years. If you use liquid glass, is there any way to remove it for painting?

Those are LSL frame sliders. Made by Spiegler, purveyors of fine SS brakelines.

Its my understanding that liquid glass is very hard to remove once you put it on. It has to be striped off with a solvent not soap and water.

OK, I'm screwed afterall! I stripped the wax off my front cowl on the ZX-6R and scrubbed the bug residue with Simple Green and WD-40, washed with a mild detergent and resealed with Meguiars Carnuba Wax. The bike looks gorgeous but the paint is etched on the front cowl where the bugs were, you can see it in bright direct sunlight as dull splatters, the rest of the time it is unnoticeable.

I'm going to have to detail all of my bikes this weekend and see if this only affects the ZX-6R or all of them. I did the VTX-1300C and no damage but then again Honda clearcoat may be much tougher, don't know.

What's weird is, I've owned dozens of motor vehicles in my life, some I was diligent in cleaning off bugs and others not so much but never had any damage to the paint like this before. I checked my Ford Explorer, it had a ton of bugs on the hood and I think I washed it last in 2007... LOL. I washed off the bugs and the clearcoat is perfect underneath.

It might be the ZX-6R got soft clear coat, IDK.

There IS something about the paints on these bikes....yes.It IS soft.I had pigspotters on my 07 for around one riding season. When I removed em...yup...there was an outline and 'almost' invisible trace(shaped like the foot itself)..not just the 'outline' where the mounting foot was covering the factory clearcoat on there. It never did come out.You couldn't really see it if ya didn't know it was there...but.....I knew...and I could see it.I suppose it could have been the result of 'waxing' around that area...going over bug splatters...you should be able to buff those out I would think.I use a product called "Meguair's ScratchX"....it gently lifts any surface blemishes caused by stuff like you say really well.It will lift a teensy bit of the surface coat off....but doesn't seem to damage anything as long as you follow up with a good wax.I wouldn't overdo the elbow grease when using anything designed to remove scratches or whatever. That clearcoat IS soft as well...it was on my 07 anyway.

One of the first things I did with my new bike was make sure the paint was clean first off....and then, gave her a good coating of quality wax.

I kepp telling him to hand buff with a polish. My God, you would nbeed to rub the daylights out of that stuff before you ever went throught gheh clear coat. I have tried ti remove true scratches like where my fender tiped over and roiled on the floor. Believe me, you will give up before you ever get a true scratch out with the polishes like liq clabar and 3m and I'm sure scratchX. Goes to show that it is very safe to use on clear coat.

if the etch was through the clearcoat, it would be very deep. If it was through the paint, you would see the black of the faring. If this sort of thing needs fixing, it is easily fixable. You just need to decide if you feel like screwing with it.

I'll let ya guys in on a little secret......the only part that has clearcoat on your bike is the gas tank!!!The rest is almost a single stage paint with very little clear on it.Wanna test it,take a little rubbing compound and a nice white towl and rub an area on the bike.Than do the same with the gas tank. You'll get a little color everywhere else and none from the tank. This is why if you ever try to match your stock paint......good luck!!!!!
I personally think it's just easier to scuff it down and do something else cooler!!!!
