Rook still can't get on the Website
10/13/09 3:19 AM

Hey BGorden,

Just posting this for Rook since he still can't seem to get on the website.

"I click it from my favs, type it in my browser - all I get is a box from my operating system asking for authentication with my username and password. I type it and a message comes up saying "you are not authorized to view the contents of this page."

If there's any way for you this fix this, gogo!!

I sent Rook an Email yesterday morning asking him to call me so we could set up a remote control of his computer to find out what is going on with it. I never heard back from him.

The link that should be used to access the forum is the same one that has always been used (https://zx14ninjaforum.com).

The only thing that changed (on Saturday afternoon) was the IP address of the website. This change should have propagated over the Internet in a few hours. It took effect here very quickly. One thing we've discovered, though, is that many Internet Service Providers do not "follow the rules" on how often they should update their DNS cache.

If anyone at this point (3 days later) still can't access the forum using the URL above, then their ISP is asleep at the switch.

About the only thing we can do for people (if they have Windows machines) is to add an entry into the Windows "hosts" file like this:

216.241.160.140 www.zx14ninjaforum.com

I can post more explicit instructions as to how to do this if anyone needs them, but if you are here reading this, you probably don't need it. This is what I was going to do remotely for Rook if he had called me.

That's the whole story, and I realize it won't make any sense to most of you... -bg

Thanks all. Looks like I am able to get here now.

I think this will work for me too. Or if I do the google routine about 20 more times, it will automatically add to my favs. Good to know I have help if I need it. Thanks everyone.

About the only thing we can do for people (if they have Windows machines) is to add an entry into the Windows "hosts" file like this:

216.241.160.140 www.zx14ninjaforum.com

The TTL setting (time to live) is too high for some of their dns record types. Some ISPs may do this to reduce traffic, because it tends to keep the dns cache around longer so when a client (like a web browser) asks for an IP/name resolution, the name server (dns) can just look in the cache and answer.

You can also put the IP address for a url in the browser, which works fine if you know it, like now. 216.241.160.140

In the early days of the internet, we used IP addresses not names. It was a pain, which is why Bind (the first good domain name server - dns) was created. Then we could give websites (and mail servers, and ftp servers, etc.) names and use those, and the name server will return the actual IP address for the client software to use to connect.

privateer:

Are you saying that our TTL settings are too high?

The IP address won't work in this case. The domain name needs to be used.

The URLs that should work are:

https://zx14ninjaforum.com/
https://zx14ninjaforum.com/
http://www.zx14ninjaforums.com/
http://zx14ninjaforums.com/
http://zx14ninjaforum.paragongj.com/

If any of these do not work for anyone, then their Internet Service Provider has not updated their DNS cache since last Saturday -- something which should be done every day at least.

The last one should not be used as a bookmark or a favorite, because it is temporary. -bg

TTL is a number tagged on packets when they are created and is decremented by routers (or other networking devices, won't go into the details here) in order to prevent routing loops. A PC using a TTL of 64 for example, can pass through 64 "hops" before the packet is discarded and this value has no impact on DNS (unless DNS queries/responses are caught in a loop...). Sounds like the DNS server Rook was using hadn't updated their cache with the new IP, generally it takes ~24 hours for the core DNS server changes to replicate.

There are TTL settings for DNS records that do something different that you describe, and don't have anything to do with hops. They are "time to live" values. We are using 30 minutes as a TTL setting for the DNS records for this domain:
