Metzeler M5 200 Series shot
04/19/15 7:54 PM

I installed a 200/50-17 Metzeler M5 about halfway through last season and I am sorry to report that it is shot after just about 2500 miles which I found strange since I put 4500 miles on the stock M5 190 E-spec and it still had more tread left than the 200/50 does. Those stock E-specs M5's wear MUCH better than than the standard M5's. When I put the 200 on the back I also installed a new E-spec front which still looks great after 2500 miles. I just ordered a 200/55-17 Metzeler M7rr which I am going to try out on the back and I am going to continue to run the front M5. Anyone try M7 yet? They are supposed to wear longer than the M5's, we will see.....

It's tough to understand this without some pics and descriptions of how you ride. Did you do burn outs? Did you do any sustained high speed runs? What air pressures? As far as I understand, E-spec isn't a different rubber compound but has more to do with the tension zones being a bit beefier.

No burnouts, been a few long trips(highway miles) at highway speeds. Air pressure at 40psi cold front and rear. Its gotta be a different compound or the tread depth is much deeper on the 190. I will take more before I remove the tire.

When tire was new.

Ill take some pics tomorrow, its about at the wear bars!

I'd say 2,500 miles out of a rear tire is pretty good. I never get more than that out of any of them.

Let's roll

M5 D specs are supposedly DC, but I think only 190/55 was available in D spec. AFAIK though, D specs had a tougher center compound than E specs. E specs were single compound (softer).

If I had to guess anything, maybe 14Rs do weigh more than what's really intended for a sport oriented tire and build up too much heat in the tire causing excess wear during sustained 70-80mph highway speeds. Might explain why people don't tend to get too many miles out of their tires. I don't know, I'm liking my Q3s but do feel their going to fall far short of my 4-5k goal.

Can't see your example too clearly, I'd probably run that tire another 500 miles though. 3k is pretty mediocre still, but you could try E-specs if you like the M5s and see if you get better wear. But it would have to be similar overall riding conditions too.

Well I managed to get another 950 miles out of the 200/50 series M5, almost 3500 miles. Not so bad I guess. Steel cords became visible today after a couple hundred mile weekend.

New 200/55 M7 going on this week some time.

Geesh and I thought the 6700 miles I have was really low!

Did almost 500 miles this past weekend on the new Metz M7RR rear. So far its excellent. Grips like the M5, its a 200/55 so its a little taller. I ordered an M7 for front I liked it so much.

Metzeler M7 after about 700 miles. Seems to turn in better with the 55 profile. Wearing well from the looks of it, excellent grip like the M5. Gotta get the matching front installed now.
