Gas mileage redux
07/22/13 1:11 PM

So I've noticed since I had my bike that the gas mileage seems low - 26-29 around town, 32-34 traveling all highway. This weekend I rode with another rider with the same model/year bike as mine. I trailed him so we basically rode the same ride, as far as acceleration, etc goes. On this ride, he used 4.3 gallons and I used 4.8 - that's a pretty big difference.

The only differences I can think of on the bikes:
- different slipons
- he uses stock filter, mine has BMC race filter
- I have a PCV map
- I have the California model (extra emissions stuff)

The PCV map I use has lots of + and -, so I'm not inclined to think that would make that difference. I also don't think the emissions control would make such a difference... would it? Both bikes even also dyno right at 165hp.

Looking for ideas on these, or what else I can look for as the culprit??

Test, Run all Zero's in your map for the next trip. "different slipons" ????? or full pipe you have listed below in your bike Mods ?

I see it's been a while since I updated my signature. Oops!

Yeah that's a good idea. It will be a while before I can ride with Dave again, but I can chart a couple tanks with a zero map to see if it makes any difference. Thing is my bike has just always gotten bad mileage. I made a post about it when I first got it, in fact, noting the same. Much of that thread seemed to think it was riding style and nothing out of the ordinary.

On this trip I feel like I was able to take riding style out of the equation. Since I've been through multiple exhausts with many different maps, I feel like that's not the problem either. So I'm left thinking this California emissions crap, or...???

Map + air cleaner = Has lost hp with the a/c alone. So add the mapquest and there is no joy swapping away, right?

Emissions? = Maybe.

Tire pressure? = Bit time!

Why so many pipes? = Guys seem to just start making their own and it snowballs into a business. Simple as that I think?

Well I was looking for "the right exhaust". The full Muzzy system was great for power - with that system the bike dyno'd at 182 rwhp, while with the slipons I just got it tuned at 165. Granted, I feel like that 182 was a generous dyno, but I think it's safe to say I lost at least some power going back to the slipons. My butt dyno seems to confirm this, though the difference seems slight.

But I thought the Muzzy exhaust made the bike sound like a typical whiny sport bike, and I want my 14 to sound like the beast it is. Those Yoshi slipons definitely do the job of that. Plus I like the look of dual exhaust a lot better - again it makes it stand out among other sport bikes. Those aesthetics are worth a few horsepower to me (though I admit, 17 is a lot...), especially when the 14 has plenty. I'd like to find an aftermarket header, like the Akra they make for the 2012-13, that I could install along with these slipons to try to make up some of that lost power, but so far no luck.

I think I will go back to the stock air filter, and try out a zero map for a couple tanks to see if that makes a difference. Then I'm gonna rip out that emissions shit and see if that makes a difference at all.

Sound?...muzzy slips
Sounds better with duals I think than a lot of them little gal bikes! Didn't do a thing for me mpg though!

Yeah, maybe it's just a dual thing; The Muzzy system I had was single sided.
